Prospective payment for capital costs: incentive for good management.

THe inclusion of capital-related costs under PPS will create many challenges to the purchasers of capital equipment. It will be increasingly difficult for health care providers to purchase equipment which enhances the quality of care, but which provides little or no economic benefit. Managing purchases under this new legislation, in a way that will maximize the goals of the hospital, will require hospital-wide strategic and financial planning, the capability to perform detailed feasibility analysis, and excellent negotiation skills.

Suramin inhibits duck hepatitis B virus DNA polymerase activity.

Suramin, a polybasic anion, blocks the activity of the DNA polymerase encoded by the duck hepatitis B virus. The interaction with the virus was studied under conditions in which the property of the drug to bind with proteins was used with plasma obtained from infected ducks with viraemia. Inhibition of DNA polymerase activity associated with core particles from infected liver and circulating virions is irreversible, occurs in a dose-response fashion and suggests that inhibition results from suramin-virus interaction. The inhibition of the specific viral polymerase activity clearly indicates that this drug should be evaluated for the treatment of hepatitis B and infection caused by the related Hepadna viruses.

Plasmodium berghei adoptive transfer and immunosuppression of immunity in allogenic neonates.

Outbred female rats were hyperimmunized with Plasmodium berghei and mated to produce progeny. Spleen cells from the immunized rats and from normal control mothers were adoptively transferred to their 48 hr old neonates. Some neonates from immune mothers were fostered to normal mothers and vice versa. Weanling rats were challenged 35 days after birth with Plasmodium berghei; immune and normal litters which had not received cells were also challenged at the same time. Rats which had received immune spleen cells from their mothers but were fostered on to non-immune mothers showed significantly lower parasitaemias and higher fluorescent antibody titres than any other combination of cell transfer and maternal milk. GVH reaction was minimal. These results suggest that the immune response to P. berghei was suppressed in the presence of passively transferred maternal antibody.

Blast transformation in different stages of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Lymphoblast transformation was studied in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis, in immune donors with scars of leishmanial lesions and in normal control subjects. Lymphocytes from immune donors and from some of the patients were stimulated by extracts of Leishmania tropica. The test can be used as a measure of immunity and may, in certain circumstances, be of help in differential diagnosis.
