Effect of acoustical, visual and tactile reverberation on speech fluency of stutterers.

The study presents the comparison of the effects of reverberation transmitted via single and combined channels (auditory, visual and tactile) on the speech of stutterers. The dependence of stuttering intensity and speech velocity upon reverberation time was determined. For all transmission channels the stuttering intensities and the speech velocities decreased with the increase in reverberation time. The results were analyzed statistically by means of the ANOVA method. It was proven that the corrective effects of visual reverberation and tactile reverberation were comparable. Reverberation transmitted via the auditory channel was more effective than when transmitted via the visual or tactile channels. Connecting the visual and tactile channels with the auditory channel has no influence on the effectiveness of reverberation.

Effect of acoustical, visual and tactile echo on speech fluency of stutterers.

The study presents the comparison of the effects of echo transmitted via single and combined channels (auditory, visual and tactile) on the speech of stutterers. The dependence of stuttering intensity and speech velocity upon echo delay time was determined. For all transmission channels the stuttering intensities and the speech velocities decreased with the increase in the delay time of the echo. The results were analyzed statistically by means of the ANOVA method. It was proven that the corrective effects of visual echo and tactile echo were comparable. Echo transmitted via the auditory channel was more effective than when transmitted via the visual or tactile channels. The greatest efficiency could be observed by transmitting echo via three connected channels: auditory, visual and tactile. The results obtained show that in stuttering therapy it is justified to use echo transmitted via three connected channels (auditory, visual, tactile).

Acoustics

Mass spectrometric investigation of dissociative ionization of toxic gases by electrons at 20-1000 eV.

Measurements of the dissociative ionization cross-sections of CO, CO2, NO and N2O molecules for electrons from 20 up to 1000 eV were performed. Total collection of ions was achieved by using a specially constructed cycloidal mass spectrometer, an ion source without slit and a collector with large area. In that open ion source the effusion molecular beam formed by a capillary was crossed by the electron beam. Owing to such parameters of the mass spectrometer the mass discrimination effects were reduced. At the ionization of CO molecules, the ions CO+, C+, O+ and CO2+ were registered; at CO2, the ions CO2+, CO+, O+, C+ and CO2(2)+; at NO, the ions NO+, N+, O+ and NO2+; at N2O, the ions N2O+, NO+, N2+, O+, (N+,N2(2)+) and N2O2+. The relative values of the partial cross-sections were normalized to the absolute total ionization cross-sections obtained by Rapp and Englander-Golden.

Carbon Dioxide

Mass spectrometric investigation of the temperature dependence of gas transport through a human body to the lungs.

This paper shows the results of the experiment on gas dynamic transport of helium from outside through the skin to the lungs of man in conditions of changing temperature and humidity of surroundings. The apparatus includes: an elastic bag in which the whole subject can be saturated by helium; a heating and refrigerating system; a respiratory system; an introduction system to the mass spectrometer; and a mass spectrometer with an ion detector of high sensitivity. The temperature of the surroundings varied from 24 degrees C up to 44 degrees C and humidity varied from 50% up to 95%. The temperature of skin varied from 25 degrees C up to 37 degrees C. Also the temperature oscillations of the period from 1 to 3 min were generated. In effect, those oscillations corresponded with the oscillations of He concentration in the expired air. At the higher level of humidity of the surroundings, a higher concentration of helium in the expired air was observed. At 100% He concentration in the bag, the minimal He concentration in the expired air was 40 ppm and maximal 110 ppm. In the opinion of the authors the thermoregulation system in the body of the subject played a significant role in the observed process of gas transport.

Effect of smoking on serum immunoglobulins and cellular blood constituents in healthy individuals.

The purpose of this paper was to study a possible link between smoking and systemic immunological abnormalities, which could have been eventually the common ground for chronic degenerative processes Blood samples were taken from 319 apparently healthy men from 19-45 years of age. Mean values of hemoglobin were slightly higher in smokers than in nonsmokers but the difference appeared to have been insignificant. In contrast, the erythrocyte counts in nonsmokers were significantly higher. Although all types of white cells were in larger numbers among smokers only neutrophilic granulocytes and lymphocytes were substantially higher than in the group of nonsmokers. In nonsmokers mean value of IgG and IgA were about 10% higher than in smokers. The same pattern was observed for serum globulin alpha 2. The clear dose-response relationship was observed for neutrophilic granulocytes, erythrocyte counts and IgG level.

[Tolerance and immunogenic effect of preventive influenza vaccination in patients with chronic lung diseases].

Seventy eight patients with chronic lung diseases were once or repeatedly vaccinated against influenza with a bivalent inactivated vaccine. The vaccination was well tolerated. Systemic reactions and transitory deterioration of the lung disease were exceptional. Fourfold rise of antibodies occurred in 1/3 (H1N1) and 1/2 (H3N2) of the patients. After one year, this increase was no more demonstrable. Annual revaccination is recommended.

Serum proteins in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Studies of serum protein patterns done in a group of 42 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (PBH) revealed the following: (1) prior to the operation significant hypalbuminaemia and increase of alpha 2-, beta- and gamma-globulins, IgG, IgA, IgM and CRP levels; (2) 12 days after operation a marked decrease of albumin concentration, increase of alpha 2-globulin and a sharp rise of CRP; (3) after 1 year a decrease of hypalbuminaemia and increase of alpha 2- and beta-globulins and CRP; in contrast to that, there was further increase of gamma-globulin concentration expressed also in the IgG, IgA and IgM levels.

[Usefulness of determining the conduction of sensory nerve fibers in the diagnosis of vibration disease].

Thirty two metallurgical industry workers exposed to vibration (I group) and nine workers of the same industrial plant but unexposed to vibration (II group) underwent the following tests: electromyography--abductor dig. V, and abductor pollicis brevis, conductability of sensory fibers n. medianus and ulnaris, conductability of motoric fibers of n. ulnaris. In the third, control, group twenty five men had conductability norms determined. The results have been statistically analysed. Electromyography appeared more useful for the diagnosis of early symptoms of the vibration disease than for nerves conductability tests. The tests of sensory nerves conductability exhibit frequent deviations in the II group workers. Positive correlation was found between electromyography and nerves conductability findings.

Occurrence of amantadine- and rimantadine-resistant influenza A virus strains during the 1980 epidemic.

The sensitivities to amantadine and rimantadine of influenza A virus epidemic strains were assayed by the haem-adsorption reduction test in mouse Ehrlich ascites cells in comparison with prototype strains and a rimantadine-resistant mutant. Besides a majority of sensitive strains, two relatively resistant epidemic strains were identified. The possible origin of resistant strains and their importance for medical practice are discussed.
