Foam test, amniotic fluid cytology, creatinine and fetography in evaluation of fetal maturity.

Amniocenteses were performed in 73 pregnant women for maturity assessment in cases of high risk pregnancies, pregnancies of unknown gestational age and before an elective cesarean section. The evaluation of fetal maturity was based on: 1) foam test; 2)amniotic fluid cytology; 3)creatinine concentration; 4) fetography and 5) clinical criteria. The results which were assessed as to the proven infant maturity were as follows: Foam test 84.3%, lipid laden cells 75%; Creatinine 62.5% and fetography 56.3%.

Amniocentesis↗

Studies on the antimicrobial activity of amniotic fluid.

Sixty-one amniotic fluid samples from women in their second and third trimesters of pregnancy were examined for antimicrobial activity. Seventy per cent of the fluids were found to be active. The factor or factors responsible for this activity were present in low concentrations. The presence of spermine in the fluids accounted for some of the antimicrobial activity.

Amniotic Fluid↗

Placental pathology in midtrimester pregnancies interrupted by intra-amniotic injection of hypertonic urea.

The histological appearances of 52 placentae from patients who had a urea-induced second trimester abortion were studied. Extensive subchorionic intervillous fibrin deposition and swollen degenerated stromal cells (probably Hofbauer cells), were found both in the placenta and membranes. Between urea injection and abortion, serial vaginal smears showed signs of progesterone deficiency. The urea-induced placental and fetal damage was similar to that seen with hypertonic saline.

Use of salazopyrin for prevention of peritoneal adhesions in rats.

The effect of orally administered salazopyrin on the prevention of experimentally induced peritoneal adhesions in albino rats was investigated. Comparison of the findings with those for untreated rats and rats given penicillin for sulfadiazine indicated that salazopyrin has a preventive effect on the development of peritoneal adhesions. This effect is dose dependent and does not seem to be due merely to the antibacterial effect of the drug.

Antimicrobial activity of human peritoneal fluid.

Cell free peritoneal fluids from 23 normal women had antimicrobial activity which was directed against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and also against yeasts. The activity was bacteriostatic or bactericidal and seemed to be due to the presence of a variety of factors which varied in their heat stability and dependence on complement. Lysozyme was present in the fluids but was not responsible for all the antimicrobial activity.
