A method of management of the fractured stem in total hip replacement.

A method of removal of the fractured stem of a total hip replacement consists of drilling the distal fragment and extracting it through the open neck of the femur. Good exposure and careful preparation of the medullary canal to take a heavier stem in a well supported position will prevent stem fracture. Extended neck prosthesis may be indicated to ensure stability. Secure reattachment of the trochanter is essential.

Leaching out from acrylic bone cement. Experimental evaluation.

Using common salt and C.M.W. bone cement mixture with Barium it has been shown that even with relatively high concentrations, only a small proportion of salt is released. This release seems to be a purely surface phenomenon and the amount released is directly proportional to the surface are of the cement. If a water soluble antibiotic and NaCl are released from the bone cement by a comparable mechanism, the inclusion of antibiotic/methylmethacrylate is difficult to justify in clinical practice.

Idiopathic protrusio acetabuli. A histological study.

Histological features of the acetabular floor in idiopathic protrusio acetabuli consist of replacement of the marrow spaces with active vascular fibrous granulation tissue and in some areas disruption of the trabecular pattern. This process could possibly elucidate the pathogenesis of protrusio.

Urethral instrumentation and deep sepsis in total hip replacement.

One hundred and ninety-five male patients developed urinary retention following Charnley low friction arthroplasty. Seventy required prostatectomy, with a mortality rate of 8.6%. The overall deep sepsis rate of the implant was 6.2%. Males with urinary tract symptoms should be investigated and treated before being accepted for total hip replacement.
