Morphology of RuO2-TiO2 coatings and TEM characterization of oxide sols used for their preparation.

Characterization of RuO(2) and TiO(2) sols of different aging times, obtained by forced hydrolysis of appropriate chloride salts, was performed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The aging time of TiO(2) sols was observed to affect the size of particles as well as the crystallinity of the solid phase of the sols. The surface morphology of RuO(2)-TiO(2) coatings on titanium, obtained by the sol-gel procedure using TiO(2) sols of different aging times and RuO(2) sol of fixed aging time, was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at three different scan sizes. The STM data indicated uniform microdistribution of the coating material (small microroughness) and an increase in nanoroughness with the aging time of the TiO(2) sol. The observed increase in real coating surface area with increasing TiO(2) particle size confirms the earlier cyclic voltammetry results.

Symmetry of single-wall nanotubes.

Nanotubes have become attractive subjects in solid-state physics owing to their potential applications in nanotechnology. Their symmetry is one of the important tools in theoretical investigations. Here a review is presented of the symmetry groups of the single-wall nano- and microtubes considered in literature: BN, GaN, MS2, C, BC3, BC2N.

Shunt nephritis associated with Moraxella bovis.

Moraxella bovis was repeatedly isolated from cerebrospinal fluid in a girl with two episodes of shunt nephritis. Clinical remission of nephritis was achieved only after shunt replacement. A list of about 20 infectious agents reported to date in patients with shunt nephritis is given. M. bovis is yet another agent previously not reported in patients with shunt nephritis.

A specific type of dislipidaemia-a complex between monotypic immunoglobulins and lipids.

Some bibliographic data suggest that serum lipids bound to monotypic immunoglobulins (Ig-s)could represent one specific type of dislipidaemia in man. In this paper 5 cases confirming such a suggestion are described. After agarose gel electrophoresis lipids bound to monotypic Ig-s moved as one separate lipoprotein category clearly different from alpha and beta lipoproteins. The electrophoretic mobility of Ig-s binding lipids was not always the same and depended on the immunochemical isotype of Ig (fig. 2). The lipid concentration in the sera, containing lipid bound Ig-s was found to be very low (table 1). Both neutral lipids and phospholipids were extracted from the isolated monotypic Ig-s (figs 4 and 5, table 2).

The influence of serum paraproteins on Burstein's reaction for beta-lipoproteins.

Using sulfonated polysaccharides to precipitate beta-lipoprotein in serum, we obtained high values in certain cases with normal serum lipids. Therefore, we examined whether there are proteins in such sera which precipitate under conditions optimal for beta-lipoprotein insolubilization. The results show that certain IgG paraproteins are precipitable by sulfonated polysaccharides giving erroneously high values for beta-lipoprotein.

[Difficulties in the identification of serum M-component].

The essential criteria for M-component identification , according to precise M-component definition based on literature data, are cited. Problems and difficulties in M-component identification are illustrated on selected cases. It is pointed out that, beside of M-component, IgA/albumin (fig. 3) as well as Ig/anti IgG soluble complexes (fig. 6) may occasionally have the appearence of electrophoretically homogeneous serum protein fraction: if this is suspected the true nature of homogeneous fraction must be further elucidated. In addition, it is stressed that lipoprotein specific staining of electropherogramms, can be very helpfull in the detection of small or abscure serum M-components (fig. 5).
