A foodborne outbreak of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Madelia at a silver anniversary reception.

Reported here is an outbreak of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Madelia infection that occurred among 44 persons attending a silver anniversary reception in Hesse, Germany. Isolates of Salmonella Madelia are extremely unusual, and no outbreaks associated with this serotype have been reported previously. Forty-two attendees were interviewed and information was obtained from each of them regarding demographic and clinical characteristics and food consumed at the reception. Twenty-four attendees submitted stool samples for microbiological testing, and 10 of these were culture-positive for S. Madelia. Twenty-three attendees met the case definition of infection, while 18 met the clinical case definition (i.e. vomiting or diarrhoea within 3 days of consuming food at the reception) and five had asymptomatic infection with S. Madelia. The most likely vehicles of infection were tortellini and a red pesto sauce.

Fibre optical scanning with high resolution in thin-layer chromatography.

In this paper a high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) scanner is presented in which a special fibre arrangement is used as HPTLC plate scanning interface. Measurements are taken with a set of 50 fibres at a distance of 400 to 500 microm above the HPTLC plate. Spatial resolutions on the HPTLC plate of better than 160 microm are possible. It takes less than 2 min to scan 450 spectra simultaneously in a range of 198 to 610 nm. The basic improvement of the item is the use of highly transparent glass fibres which provide excellent transmission at 200 nm and the use of a special fibre arrangement for plate illumination and detection.

The addition-reaction product of 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexachloro-1, 4-disilabutane with N-methylimidazole

The product of the addition reaction of 1,1,1,4,4,4-hexachloro-1, 4-disilabutane with N-methylimidazole is &mgr;-ethylene-C(1):C(2)-bis[dichlorotris(1-methylimidazole-N(3))sili con(IV)] dichloride, C(26)H(40)Cl(4)N(12)Si(2)(2+).2Cl(-). Two of the six Cl atoms are replaced by aromatic nitrogen bases and the coordination sphere of silicon is extended from four to six. The molecule is located on a crystallographic centre of inversion. The environment around the Si atom can be described as a slightly distorted octahedron with the Cl atoms occupying axial positions and the three N-methylimidazole ligands and the ethylene bridge in the equatorial plane.

[Formation of allicin from dried garlic (Allium sativum): a simple HPTLC method for simultaneous determination of allicin and ajoene in dried garlic and garlic preparations].

In garlic (Allium sativum L.) the enzyme alliin lyase catalyzes the cleavage of alliin into allicin which reacts further to furnish ajoene. A simultaneous determination of allicin and ajoene is introduced which, in contrast to the determination of alliin only, allows for the testing of the activity of alliin lyase. It can be demonstrated that at a pH value of less than 3 the enzyme produces only small amounts of allicin. For this reason preparations from garlic should be administered only as enteric-coated formulations.

[On social adaptation in adolescence (author's transl)].

In adolescence problems of social adaptation are characterized by a particular urgency because the adolescent is taking on new social roles which involve various new social demands. A feature of maladaptation seems to be the reported growing number of ill apprentices who are absent of work. This work-absentism is seen in connection with research into social and psychosocial factors found to occur close in time to the onset of illness in man. By making use of the Social Readjustment Rating Scale (developed by Holmes and Rahe) the paper gives an impression how to measure juvenile social adaptation. The paper is finished with general recommendations to promote juvenile social adaptability.

[On adaptation of adolescents to the vocational training in the point of view of schooldoctors (author's transl)].

Since 1969 bibliographie informes that growing numbers of apprentices and young workers are absent from work in spite of their obviously good health-state. All reported results of several studies and investigation-programms show that in most of the described cases problems of juvenile adaptability are linked with. Difficulties arise when young people change over from school education to vocational training. At first the paper deals with the differently used terminus adaptation. Three empirical principles from available studies may be deduced. They are interpreted under the point of view of school-doctors, works-doctors and vocational-school-instructors. Recommendations for school-doctors finish the paper.

[Adaptation of children to hospitalization].

Infants especially of about 1 to 4 years of age are opposed to an unknown environment and to unusual demands when they are admissed to hospital. Literature informes about some characteristic troubles during the first time of adaptation. In addition to those kinds of transitory adaptional difficulties, physical and mental retardation of development may appear when infants become long-time patients. The socalled psychic hospitalism has to be valued as a sign of underprotection and differs from adaptional troubles as a symptom of full strain. The survey shows adequate measures how physicians and nurses may deal with both of the problems in order to ease adaptation and to prevent psychic hospitalism.
