[Comparison of the mucociliary transport rate of rhinitis sicca and atrophic rhinitis].

OBJECTIVE: To study the mucociliary transport function of rhinitis sicca and atrophic rhinitis, and to explore the standard of diagnosis. METHOD: The MTR of normal control group, the rhinitis sicca group and the atrophic rhinitis were determined by using saccharin, and then compared. Then MTR of rhinitis sicca treatment group were compared before and after treatment. RESULT: The MTR of normal group: (9.15 +/- 0.86) mm/min; the rhinitis sicca group: (5.84 +/- 0.48) mm/min and the atrophic rhinitis group: (3.36 +/- 0.07) mm/min. There were significant difference among them (P < 0.05). 25 patients of rhinitis sicca were treated by administering the pill of Gelomyrtol forte in 2 weeks. The MTR of rhinitis sicca were no significant difference before and after treatment (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Rhinitis sicca is a separate nasal disease, which is different from atrophic rhinitis. It is important to find an effective treatment for the disease.

[Study on effect of flavonoids from oil-removed seeds of Hippophae rhamnoides on inducing apoptosis of human hepatoma cell].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the inhibitory and apoptosis-inducing effects of flavonoids from oil-removed seeds of Hippophae rhamnoides (FSH) on liver cancer cell line BEL-7402. METHODS: SRB, Wright staining, electron microscope and flow cytometry are used to study the effects of STT on BEL-7402 cell line. RESULTS: FSH has potent inhibitive effect on BEL-7402 cell line in a concentration-dependent manner. BEL-7402 cells exhibit typical morphological alteration of apoptosis when sub-Gl peak can be seen. CONCLUSION: FSH exerts its inhibitive effect on BEL-7402 cells by inducing apoptosis.

Comparative efficacy of preprandial or postprandial Humalog Mix75/25 versus glyburide in patients 60 to 80 years of age with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Humalog Mix75/25 (Mix75/25) is a novel premixed insulin containing 75% neutral protamine lispro (an intermediate-acting insulin) and 25% insulin lispro. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare glycemic control and hypoglycemia rates with Mix75/25 versus glyburide, and with preprandial versus postprandial Mix75/25, in patients aged 60 to 80 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus and persistent hyperglycemia on sulfonylurea therapy. METHODS: In this open-label, 16-week, parallel-group study, patients were randomized to 1 of 2 treatments: glyburide 15 mg/d (or up to the maximum daily dose) or Mix75/25. The Mix75/25 group was randomly subdivided into preprandial (immediately before breakfast and dinner) and postprandial (within 15 minutes after the start of breakfast and dinner) injection subgroups. The primary outcomes were glycemic control and rate of hypoglycemia. RESULTS: A total of 143 patients were randomized; 127 completed the study. The change in glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) from baseline to end point was significantly greater with Mix75/25 than with glyburide (mean +/- SEM, -1.14% +/- 0.18% vs -0.36% +/- 0.15%, P = 0.001). HbA(1c) changes with preprandial and postprandial Mix75/25 were not significantly different (-1.20% +/- 0.26% vs -1.08% +/- 0.26%, P = 0.748). Fasting blood glucose (BG), 2-hour postprandial BG, and mean daily BG reductions were greater with Mix75/25 than with glyburide (P < 0.001); preprandial and postprandial Mix75/25 administration did not differ significantly with respect to any of these BG variables. The hypoglycemia rate increased with Mix75/25 by 0.17 +/- 0.02 episodes per patient per 30 days, but there was no change with glyburide (P = 0.077). Body weight increased by 1.02 +/- 0.35 kg with Mix75/25 and decreased by 0.85 +/- 0.18 kg with glyburide (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with glyburide, Mix75/25 significantly improved glycemic control in older patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, could be administered after meals without compromising glycemic control, and was well tolerated.

[The conversion from CS2 to COS by spark discharge].

Spark discharge method was used to take simulative investigations on the conversion reaction from CS2 to COS by lightning. The results showed that 1.33 x 10(3) Pa CS2 could act with O2 or H2O in the atmosphere (25 degrees C, 10(5) Pa) under electric discharge conditions (V = 3000 V), and COS was produced as well as other species such as CO, CO2, SO2 and so on. Factors such as CS2 concentration, water vapor and discharge time played important roles in the formation of COS. Based on these results and several theories, possible mechanisms of correlative processes during thunderstorms were proposed here, which could contribute to give evidence for the conversion from CS2 to COS by lightning during thunderstorms.

[Effect of B7-2 expression plasmid on the specific immune response induced by HBV DNA vaccine].

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether B7-2 could improve hepatitis B virus (HBV)-specific immunity induced by inoculation of a plasmid encoding HBV preS2+S HBV DNA vaccine. METHODS: B7-2 expression plasmids were inoculated with the DNA vaccine in the gastrocemius muscles. Then the cytolytic T Lymphocyte activity (CTL), the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response and the titers of anti-HBs were analysed. RESULTS: The DTH response and CTL activity were significantly enhanced when B7-2 expression plasmids were coinoculated with the DNA vaccine (P<0.01), but the titers of anti-HBs were unaffected (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that B7-2 expression plasmid could improve HBV specific cell-mediated immunity induced by HBV DNA vaccine, and the gene-based coinoculation strategy using HBV viral antigen and B7-2 costimmulating could be a powerful means of combating HBV infection.
