Thirty-nine patients with brain tumors were studied with conventional and Q. EEG mapping (FFT) comparatively to CT-Scan. In 33 cases, Q. EEG provided a precise localization of the tumor site, based on slow waves. Furthermore there was a good correlation between CT-Scan and focal theta activity in 31 patients. Focal delta waves were more frequent in deep tumors involving white matter. In 11 of 13 superficial tumors, alpha rhythm was ipsilaterally located, whereas in deeper lesions, its activity was decreased on the tumor side. The putative mechanism of these results are discussed.
A large number of investigators use Pearson's product-moment correlation in analyzing the temporal organization of speech. Some of their papers present results obtained by correlation between overlapping intervals. The purpose of this letter is to show that a high correlation could be a "statistical artifact" in such a method. Second, it mathematically points out incorrect reasoning by Tuller and Kelso in their reply to such an argument [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 76, 1030-1036 (1984)].
The comparative values of computerized tomography and radionuclide scan for the diagnosis of brain lesions were assessed on a series of 550 patients. A number of indications for each of these two methods have emerged from our results and from those found in the literature. The biases encountered in this type of study are discussed, and a "decision-making flow-chart" is proposed. The procedure of choice is computerized tomography in patients with suspected tumour or intracerebral haematoma, and radionuclide scan in those with suspected subdural haematoma or superficial cerebrovascular disease. The usefulness of clinical examination to determine precisely which of these two methods should be used cannot be overstressed.

The manpower and operating cost of home-based treatment was compared with the manpower and operating cost of hospital-based treatment during the second year and at the end of two years of treatment. Of the 155 patients destined to receive inpatient treatment, 76 were randomly assigned to home treatment, 79 to hospital treatment. The two groups were similar as to important social, demographic, and clinical characteristics, including psychiatric diagnosis. The manpower and operating cost of treatment, measured in two ways, was similar in the two groups during the second year. However, over the 2-year period hospital-based treatment of patients in each of the three diagnostic groups was more expensive than home-based treatment. Also, regardless of which treatment was given, the cost of treating schizophrenics was higher than the cost of treating manic-depressives which, in turn, was higher than the cost of treating individuals with depressive neurosis. Treatment failures were discussed. Over the 2-year period, failures in home-based treatment accounted for 39.1% of the total manpower and operating cost of home-based treatment, calculated according to Cost Model 1, and for 67.1% of the cost calculated according to Cost Model 2. The concept of failure in hospital-based treatment is also discussed.
Male rabbits (10 weeks old) were fed, for 20 weeks, purified diets rich in fat (45% of calories) containing saturated fats (butter), polyunsaturated fats (evening primrose oil + butter or sunflower oil + butter) for 20 weeks. Linoleic acid represented respectively 3.6, 33 and 34% of the dietary fatty acids, while gamma-linolenic acid was present (4.4%) solely in the second group. A significant increase in di-homo-gamma-linolenic acid in plasma, platelets and aorta was noted only in the animals fed evening primrose oil. Despite this, the results of the platelet aggregation to thrombin and ADP, the recalcification plasma-clotting time (platelet-rich plasma) and the severity of atherosclerosis were not significantly different from those observed in the group fed sunflower oil. In contrast, in comparison to the butter-fed animals, the two groups fed the polyunsaturated fats showed remarkable improvements in the clotting time (P less than 0.01) and in the severity of atherosclerotic lesions (evening primrose oil P less than 0.001; sunflower oil P less than 0.05). However, the response to thrombin-induced aggregation was significantly decreased (P less than 0.05) only in the evening primrose oil-fed animals. In these long-term studies in young rabbits, dietary gamma-linolenic acid did not seem to have marked beneficial effects, additional to those induced by linoleic acid, on platelet functions or on atherosclerosis.

Lanosterol, a cholesterol precursor that increases considerably in the platelets of rats treated with oral contraceptives, was incubated with either platelet-rich plasma or washed platelet suspension. After 2 minutes there was a remarkable dose-related increase in platelet activity. This platelet hyperactivity was measured by clotting time and platelet aggregation could not be reproduced by cholesterol or ethinylestradiol.
