[Chronic recurrent polychondritis].
In a 71-year-old woman suffering from recurrent fever, dry cough, pain during sighing, hoarseness and later severe inflammation of the cartilage of both auricles 'relapsing polychondritis' was diagnosed. This is a rare disease of cartilage and connective tissue. Most frequent symptoms are inflammation of the auricles and nasal septum, joint disorders and inflammation of eye structures, larynx and trachea. The aetiology may be autoimmunity. The clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by a cartilage biopsy. The disease is recurrent and causes substantial morbidity and mortality. Therapy consists of NSAIDs, steroids, and sometimes immunosuppressive agents.

Effects of anoxia on the cochlear summating potential in the guinea pig.
The cochlear summating potential (SP) was recorded extracochlearly from the apex and the round window in 25 guinea pigs, applying anoxia during periods of 1-2 min. For 2 and 8 kHz tone pips at 80 and 60 dB SPL, respectively, the initially negative SP at the apex diminished and even became positive during oxygen cut-off. After restoration of oxygenation, the change in SP reversed direction and was followed by a large negative undershoot. At the round window, the initially positive SP evoked by 8 kHz, 60 dB SPL tone pips followed exactly the same time course, but with inverted polarity, while the majority of the recordings of the initially negative SP evoked by 2 kHz, 80 dB SPL tone pips followed a course similar to the apical negative SP. However, the negative round window SP showed only slight polarity reversal and no undershoot. A small number of the recordings at the round window for 2 kHz showed an increase of the negative SP during anoxia followed by a decline of the SP and recovery after anoxia. The similar time course of the initially negative SP at the apex and the initially positive SP at the round window failed to support the hypothesis of a multi-component SP. However, the polarity reversal during anoxia and the different reactions to anoxia of the 2 kHz round-window SP suggest that the SP may consist of several different components.

[Adenoid hypertrophy as initial symptom of an infection with the human immunodeficiency virus].
A woman aged 25 yr consulted the Department of Otorhinolaryngology with complaints of persistent nasal obstruction caused by adenoid hypertrophy recurring shortly after recent adenoidectomy. Previous elaborate investigations did not reveal the cause of this unexplained phenomenon. Testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was positive. In case of an unexplained recurrent adenoid hypertrophy, an infection with the human immunodeficiency virus should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Development of image analysis demonstration packages with MENU: educational aspects.
In this paper a tool, MENU, is presented, with which demonstration packages can be easily constructed. The teacher designs the set-up of the package by editing a demonstration specification file, containing both commands to MENU to display frames to the end-user or to execute tasks and the text of the frames. The text contains explanations for the end-user together with the options he can choose. MENU takes care that the corresponding actions are executed. Two image analysis packages, one about CT and one about gated cardiac bloodpool scintigraphy, are presented as examples of the use of MENU. It is concluded, that with MENU (existing) programs can be modeled into packages very easily and efficiently. MENU proves to be a tool that is worthwhile for educational purposes.
