Predicting effective contraceptive behavior in college females.

This article reports the results of a preliminary research project that explored the relationship between assertiveness, cognitive development and contraceptive behavior among single young women in their freshman and senior years at college. A total of 60 college women at a university health center volunteered to participate in this pilot study. They filled out three instruments: the Galassi College Self-Expression Scale (SES), the Measure of Intellectual Development (MID) tool and an author-developed sexuality questionnaire. Although there was a significant relationship between cognitive development and assertiveness, no significant relationships were found between cognitive development, assertiveness and use of effective contraception. Interesting descriptive characteristics were identified. Clinical implications are discussed.

Dermal surface in electric and thermal injuries. Observations by scanning electron microscopy.

The dermal surface (after enzymatic digestion of the dermo-epidermal junction) in electric and heat lesions is described. There do not appear to be elements that help in forming a precise differential diagnosis. It is possible, however, to differentiate these lesions from all traumatic cutaneous injuries and some limited nontraumatic lesions (e.g., verrucae). Remarkably good preservation of the dermal surface even in an advanced state of decomposition does suggest the possibility of certain diagnosis of electric and heat lesions even when postmortem phenomena have greatly damaged or even totally removed the epithelial part of the skin.

New observations on cutaneous firearm wounds.

The authors describe the aspect of the dermal surface in firearm wounds. In entrance wounds, the abraded area is rather evident, with loss of the papillary pattern and lacerations of the basement membrane. Exit wounds appear as irregularly lacerated interruptions, with protruding collagen fibers; the surrounding dermis has nearly undamaged papillae. Also described, still on the dermal surface, are the flame effect and the powder tattooing. Evident lesions of the basement membrane, produced by the grains of powder, can be observed. Particles [gunshot residues (GSR)] are often recognizable lying on the dermal surface or entrapped among the collagen fibers of the superficial dermis.

Dermal surface morphology in wound healing. An experimental scanning electron microscope study.

The authors observed, with a scanning electron microscope, the dermal surfaces of experimental wounds, following the enzymatic digestion with trypsin of the dermo-epidermal junction. Cut lesions showed an early reconstitution of the basement membrane and progressive convergence of the margins. A peculiar arrangement of the dermal crests was also observed. In wounds with loss of substance, the complete coating by newly formed basement membrane took longer. There was an early deformation of the holes of hair follicles in the undamaged dermis surrounding the lesion, as well as the appearance of creases that moved toward the center. This process was over within a few days; then the lesion became very small and the holes of the hair follicles reappeared. The results suggest a force of traction bound toward the center of the lesion and acting on the surface, the effects of which on the basement membrane are most evident between the eighth and the 15th days.

SEM study of dermal surface. A new approach to forensic traumatology.

We describe a method of enzymatic digestion of the dermo-epidermal junction, that allows an observation with a SEM of the finest details of the dermal surface covered by the reticular fibrils of the basement membrane. By means of this technique, we have made a panoramic review of the traumatology and have observed typical characteristics in all types of examined lesions. It seems that the method can constitute a new approach for medicolegal study, in all those cutaneous lesions that involve, even superficially, the dermis.

Gross pathology and scanning electron microscopy of pilomatricoma.

We have examined gross specimens of pilomatricomas, divided in half after surgical excision and have found a peculiar gross appearance that has enabled us to arrive at a correct diagnosis. The macroscopic structure of the tumor appears to conform to the scanning electron microscopic picture.

The ultrastructure of the electric burn in man: a transmission electron microscopy-scanning electron microscopy study.

The authors describe the ultrastructural aspects of the electric burn observed with the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and the scanning electron microscope (SEM). With the TEM the most apparent feature is the homogenization and arrangement of the filamentous cytoplasmic material in elongated and parallel bundles together with elongation of the nuclei and junctional structures. SEM studies present a three-dimensional vision of the filamentous material that confirms and clarifies the cellular deformation as a whole. An hypothesis is advanced suggesting that the phenomenon is due to the effects produced by the extremely rapid dehydration of the tissue or that the electric current and Joule effect can act upon the filaments and contractile proteins, causing the cell deformation.

Scanning electron microscope study of the lung in drowning.

The authors describe the results obtained using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to study drowned lungs and control lungs. Results are compared with a previous study carried out using laboratory animals. The results from both studies are analogous, in the absence of chronic pulmonary emphysema. The diagnosis of chronic pulmonary emphysema is simple with the SEM even when dealing with autoptic material obtained 24 to 48 h after death, but the diagnosis of drowning becomes difficult in lungs with chronic emphysema.

Lung morphology in experimental acute paraquat poisoning. SEM observations.

The authors describe the SEM ultrastructural aspects of rat lungs following acute paraquat poisoning. The results obtained confirmed previous TEM observations and suggest an early inhibition of secretory activity in type II alveolar cells. This morphological aspect can be related to the generally known early development of respiratory difficulties following acute paraquat poisoning. The technique employed allows a precise study of alveolar reepithelization in further stages of poisoning. These last observations agree with the hypothesis of reepithelization by type II alveolar cells.

A case of murder by impalement.

We report here the case of a young oligophrenic man killed by a psychopath by impalement, using a sharp stick which was thrusted into the perineal region, thus causing injuries to abdominal and thoracic viscera.

Scanning electron microscopic ultrastructural alterations of the pulmonary alveolus in experimental drowning.

Scanning electron microscopic structural and ultrastructural alterations of alveolar wall in experimental drowning are described. The results obtained confirm the literature's data. Peculiar microlesions affecting Type I alveolar cells, the basement membrane, and sometimes the capillary endothelium could also be observed. Finally, Type II alveolar cells show alterations which could be related with a possible direct action of the drowning liquid.

The ultrastructure of corified skin.

We studied the ultrastructure of human skin in a particular form of postmortem transformation: so-called "corification." Six- and 12-month-old corpses were examined. The epidermis showed a remarkable ultrastructural preservation of its components comparable to freshly fixed material. The dermis was less well preserved with altered bandage of collagen fibrils and amorphous precipitates in the ground substance. No explanation is found for such a phenomenon.

A case of dysembryogenesis of the aortic arches.

A medico-legal necropsy conducted on a stillborn child revealed certain abnormalities of the heart and the large vessels. Both the pulmonary artery and the aorta issued from the right ventricle, while the left ventricle communicated with the right superiorly and below the crest. There was no ductus arteriosus. As far the vessels were concerned, it was found that the aortic arch was directed rightwards, the innominate artery was absent and the right subclavian and common carotid issued directly from the arch. On the left, too, it was noted that the subclavian issued from the left branch of the pulmonary artery. If is suggested that these alterations were the result of primary obliteration of the left 4th aortic arch. This would explain both the dextroversion of the final arch and the absence of the anonymous artery. A further outcome would be prevention of the normal formation of the left subclavian, and its derivation from the left component of the 6th pair of aortic arches. Histological sections of the large vessels examined were prepared for investigation under the light microscope.

Ultrastructure of human tissues after prolonged interment in metal-lined coffins.

The ultrastructure of certain tissues is sometimes preserved after lengthy interment in metal-lined coffins. Susceptible structures of the epidermis, such as the mitochondria and nuclear envelopes, may be clearly identifiable. Electron microscopy thus permits recognition not only of individual cell types, but also of different intracytoplasmic organelles. In the same way, striped muscle fibers are well preserved, and all components of sarcomeres may be distinguished.

Ultrastructural aspects of electric burn in man.

The authors have studied the ultrastructural aspects of the electric burn in human skin. They divide the lesion in three areas: a central one, in which the stratum corneum is almost completely lost, and the other strata are reduced only to fragment oriented in an univocal direction; an intermediate area, in which this orientation is visible also in nuclei, desmosomes, tonofilaments, and in which the nuclei appear elongated respect to those of control section; and finally a peripheral area in which damages are very reduced, but in which are present elongation of nuclei and other structures and orientation. The possibility of an action due to an electro-magnetic field is discussed.

Fine structure of post-mortal tissues transformations. Preliminary observations.

The Authors have studied the ultrastructure of human skin in a particular anomalous form of post-mortal transformation: the so called corification. Some structures (cell membranes, desmosomes, mitochondria, nuclear envelopes) are well preserved, while other structures (such as endoplasmic reticulum) are upset. These observations suggested that in the corification endogenous and exogenous enzymatic actions are extremely inhibited.

[Effect of LSD-25 on cholinesterases of the rat brain].

The indications for investigation on the LSD-25 "in vivo" activity on brain cholinesterases of the rat, have been considered. Indications of materials and method used have been supplied too. From the results obtained it emerged no clear evidence of a statistically significant inhibition of cholinesterases due to LSD-25. The results have been discussed and it has been evidenced that the lack of action of the psychotomimetic substance on cholinesterases could be only apparent or that the discrepancy between the LSD-25 anticholinesterase "in vivo" and "in vitro" action should be ascribed to the too scarce tissue levels which can be reached with the does utilized. Apart from the hypothesis, tending to explain the results obtained, it has been considered that the LSD-25 behavioural action, is not probably carried out thanks to a cholinesterase activity.
