The effects of superoxide dismutase (SOD) alone or in combination with acidified sodium nitrite (NaNO2), a liberator of nitric oxide were examined in dogs after ischemia and reperfusion. Animals were divided into five groups. Left anterior descending coronary artery was occluded for 90 min followed by 4 hours of reperfusion with or without therapeutic interventions given preceding reperfusion. Left ventricular end diastolic pressure (LVEDP), left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP) and ECG changes were monitored throughout the study. Area at risk was defined by Evans blue and area of infarction by incubation in triphenyltetrazolium. Myocardial tissue lipid peroxidation was measured in ischemic and non-ischemic zones. There was no evidence of infarction until ninety minutes of ischemia. Percentage area of necrosis vis-a-vis area at risk percentage necrosis in left vertricular mass was significantly low in animals treated with combination of SOD and NaNO2 in comparison with isolated treatment with saline, SOD or NaNO2. LVEDP increased significantly following ischemia and remained unchanged during saline reperfusion. Treatment with SOD, NaNO2 in isolation or its combination significantly lowered LVEDP. Maximum increase in tissue lipid peroxidation was observed in saline and NaNO2 treated animals. SOD alone or in combination with NaNO2 significantly lowered the lipid peroxidation. The results clearly demonstrate that reperfusion can cause necrosis in ischemic myocardium. Combined treatment with SOD and NaNO2 offers significant cardioprotection against oxidative stress.

Silver staining nucleolar organiser regions (AgNORs) were studied in 35 cases of melanocytic skin tumours. In the 23 cases of benign melanocytic naevi AgNORs per nucleus were between 1.06 and 3.43 with a mean of 2.05. In the 12 cases of malignant melanoma the AgNORs ranged from 4.26 to 10.66 (mean 7.43). Since statistically significant difference in AgNOR counts between benign and malignant melanocytic skin tumours was noted, this technique may serve as a useful adjunct to routine histopathology.
Transrectal fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was performed in 100 cases of prostatomegaly detected by digital rectal examination (DRE). The cytologic findings were compared with histolgic findings of material obtained by transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) in 84 of the cases. In addition, pre-prostatectomy transabdominal ultrasonography was done in 55 of the cases and the findings were compared with cytologic and histologic diagnoses. The accuracy of diagnosis by FNAC for benign lesions and carcinoma of prostate was 98.33% and 81.81% respectively. The accuracy of transabdominal ultrasonography for benign lesions was 91.66% but that for carcinoma was only 38.46%. The technique of transrectal FNAC was found to be simple quick, economical and easy to repeat with high accuracy and was suitable for outpatients.
Xeroderma pigmentosum is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis characterized by markedly increased sensitivity to sunlight, and the early development of skin tumours. Four cases of XP with malignancy have been described with a brief review of the literature. The cases have been documented with a view to study the evolution of the disease process and the development of malignancy during the follow up period.

Five cases of primary fallopian tube carcinoma were located in 30 years retrospective study (1965-1994) from the Department of Pathology, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, Karnataka. Abnormal vaginal bleeding was the presenting symptom in all the cases. Pelvic mass was palpable in four cases. The diagnosis was not suspected preoperatively in any case. All patients underwent surgical treatment. Laparotomy revealed the presence of a macroscopic growth in the fallopian tube which was confirmed to be adenocarcinoma histopathologically in all the cases. In three cases follow-up is available. Only one patient received postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma is an unusual brain tumour of children with a favourable prognosis. The tumour takes origin from subpial astrocytes of the cerebral cortex. Histologically proliferation of spindle cells, mono and multinucleated giant cells containing lipid droplets and the absence of necrosis are distinctive features. Herein we report the morphological and immunophenotypical features of a case of pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma.

1. Myocarditis in the course of enteric fever is a common occurrence. In a series of 100 bacteriologically or serologically proved enteric fever, we found 7 cases with clinical evidence of myocarditis and 46 cases with ECG evidence of myocarditis. 2. Commonest ECG abnormality was Q-Tc prolongation (29%) followed by ST-T changes (20%) bundle branch block (7%) first degree A-V Block (%) and arrhythmia (2%). 3. All the ECG changes were transient except bundle branch block which persisted in 3 cases. 4. Those with other systemic complications had a higher chance of having myocarditis (P < 0.01). 5. Autopsy evidence of myocarditis was found in 2 cases. With our results, it is obvious that ECT must be recorded in all cases of enteric fever. Those with ECG changes must be observed carefully for clinical evidence of myocarditis. All these patients must have absolute bed rest. Judicious use of corticosteroids is indicated in selected cases of selected cases of severe myocarditis. Diuretics are indicated in cases with evidence of congestive cardiac failure.
Primary retroperitoneal neoplasia is not a common condition. Out of the 34 tumours analysed in the present study 15 were germ cell tumours, 10 were soft tissue tumours and 9 were tumours of the sympathetic nervous system. Among the 15 germ cell tumours, 9 were mature teratomas while there were 2 each of immature teratoma, embrayonal carcinoma and dysgerminoma. Out of the 10 soft tissue tumours 9 were sarcomas with 5 liposarcomas, 3 leiomyosarcomas and 1 neurogenic sarcoma. The only benign soft tissue tumour was a lipoma. The 9 tumours of the sympathetic nervous system included 7 neuroblastomas and 2 ganglioneuroblastomas. Overall, in the present series majority of the primary retroperitoneal tumours (22 out of 34 i.e. 70.6%) were malignant tumours.

Unilocular Cystic Sebaceous Lymphadenoma of the parotid gland also described as benign lymphoepithelial parotid cyst with sebaceous differentiation is an unusual tumour which histogenetically resembles Warthin's tumour. We present two such cases reported in the department of Pathology, Kasturba Medical College with review of the literature on histogenesis.
