[Glandular kallikrein in chronic recurrent parotitis].

Salivary kallikrein was measured in the parotid saliva of 11 patients suffering from chronic recurrent parotitis and 15 healthy control persons. While in the control group kallikrein levels from 1-4 U/l could be registrated, the results obtained from patients were significantly elevated and varied between 23,45 U/l and 89,41 U/l. Release of kallikrein from destroyed duct cells is suggested to be the origin of the elevated salivary levels of this enzyme in chronic recurrent parotitis. A leakage of glandular kallikrein into the interstitial fluid and thereby release of kallidin from kininogen is discussed as a possible mechanism in the development of this disease.

[Phosphohexose isomerase activity in parotid and submandibular saliva as a parameter in the diagnosis of chronic sialadenitis].

The phosphohexose isomerase (PHI) activity was measured in parotid and submandibular saliva of patients suffering from chronic sialadenitis and of healthy control persons. In control persons the mean PHI value determined in parotid saliva (10.93 +/- 1.17 U/l) was significantly lower compared to that measured in submandibular saliva (38.18 +/- 4.44 U/l). In chronic sialadenitis the salivary PHI activity was significantly increased and reached values up to 5440 U/l in parotid secretion and values up to 1620 U/l in submandibular secretion. The possible role of salivary PHI activity as a parameter for the diagnosis of chronic sialadenitis is discussed.

Status marmoratus and Bielschowsky bodies. A report of two cases and review of the literature.

Intraneuronal inclusions, consisting of polyglucosan and having histochemical and ultrastructural features identical to Lafora body of familial myoclonic epilepsy (Unverricht-Lafora disease), have been found restricted to the lateral pallidum in five patients. Two of these patients were also found to have status marmoratus of the basal ganglia. These lateral pallidal inclusions have been named after Bielschowsky, their original discoverer. We report two additional patients with status marmoratus and Bielschowsky bodies and suggest that these two conditions are frequent concomitant phenomena arising independently from a common cause.

[Surgical treatment of distal seminal duct obstruction].

Transurethral resection of the colliculus seminalis offers a method of removing obstructions in the region of the ductus ejaculatorii. Treatment of post-gonadal azoospermia is problematic since, even if the seminal duct is made passable, the sperm quality remains unsatisfactory. Impairment of sperm motility and spermiogenesis itself is suspected as the expression of an auto-immune reaction to distal obstruction.

[Relapsing polychondritis. A case report with special reference to otolaryngological manifestations].

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease of unknown etiology. The symptomatology is characterised by inflammatory and degenerative changes of multiple cartilaginous structures. --In this peculiar case the nose, the larynx and the cartilages of the ribs and of one hand were involved. Distinct inflammatory changes of the left vocal cord were seen. The diagnosis of the disease was assured by the presented electron microscopic studies. Treatment with high doses of corticosteroids did not prove effective. The disease process could only be controlled by in immunosuppressive combination therapy with prednisone, and cyclophosphamide. --Characteristic clinical features, diagnosis, pathogenesis and therapeutical problems are discussed.

Automated processing of dynamic properties of intraventricular pressure by computer program and electronic circuit.

A procedure for automatic detection and digital processing of the maximum first derivative of the intraventricular pressure (dp/dtmax), time to dp/dtmax(t - dp/dt) and beat-to-beat intervals have been developed. The procedure integrates simple electronic circuits with a short program using a simple algorithm for the detection of the points of interest. The tasks of differentiating the pressure signal and detecting the onset of contraction were done by electronics, while the tasks of finding the values of dp/dtmax, t - dp/dt, beat-to-beat intervals and all computations needed were done by software. Software/hardware 'trade off' considerations and the accuracy and reliability of the system are discussed.

Perforation of the nasal septum in patients with renal failure.

Spontaneous perforation of the nasal septum was observed in 8 out of 104 patients (74 on maintenance hemodialysis; 30 after cadaveric renal transplantation). All patients showed a round or oval defect of the non-osseous septum, which was accompanied by marked atrophic rhinitis. Epistaxis was common in uremic patients in general and was also present in 5 patients with septal perforation, but otherwise the defect was hardly associated with any symptoms. Various factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of this lesion; local trauma from nasal catheters postoperatively; impaired mucosa cell proliferation; disturbed innervation of the vessels in the nasal septum due to polyneuropathy of the autonomous nervous system; ischemia secondary to arteriolar narrowing.

Inhibition of Na+,K+-stimulated ATPase in the cochlea of the guinea pig. A potential cause of disturbed inner ear function in terminal renal failure.

The frequent occurrence of sensorineural hearing loss in patients with chronic renal insufficiency prompted us to study the influence of chronic renal failure upon Na+,K+-ATPase in the inner ear of guinea pigs. Na+,K+-activated ATPase was defined as the ouabain-sensitive part of total ATPase, the activity of which was obtained in the presence of sodium, potassium and magnesium. A significant reduction of Na+,K+-activated ATPase was found in the inner ear of uremic animals. Such inhibition could be demonstrated as early as 12 hours after subtotal nephrectomy. An inverse correlation was found between serum creatinine levels and Na+,K+-activated ATPase. A similar inhibition of Na+,K+-activated ATPase in uremia is also found in other tissues (erythrocytes, renal tubules, intestinal mucosal cells, sarcolemma). Na+,K+-ATPase in the cochlea plays a key role in the maintenance of cochlear cationic gradients. It is suggested that inhibition of this enzyme system may contribute to the inner ear dysfunction in uremia.

Proteolytic denaturation and methods of improving the stability of glucose isomerase preparations.

Evidence is provided in support of proteolytic denaturation of free and immobilized preparations of glucose isomerase from a Bacillus species. A number of methods to improve the stability with respect to proteolysis have been tested and their advantages as well as shortcomings are discussed. These methods include hollow-fiber treatment, gel permeation, thermal treatment, and addition of protease inhibitors. The half-life of the free and the cellulose acetate fiber-entrapped preparations of glucose isomerase can be significantly improved. For example, the hollow-fiber treatment can improve the half-life by an order of magnitude.

[Measurement of post-irradiation population kinetics using single-cell cytophotometry combined with double-labeling autoradiography: model investigations into a diploid Ehrlich ascites tumor after 475 rd X-irradiation (author's transl)].

A technique for in vivo determination of the population kinetics in tumors following irradiation is reported in this paper. Using the model of a diploid Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT-dipl), the migration of cells from different subpopulations was followed up through the generation cycle. The measurability of post-irradiation growth kinetics in different subpopulations is emphasized with regard to its importance for practical application with combination treatments or possibility for the problem of dose-time relations. The individual results obtained after 475 rd are presented in detail.
