The present study involved evaluation of the role played by cyclic AMP on the secretion and mechanism of action of gastrin in man. On the basis of the results obtained, gastrin secretion induced by an excessive rise in gastric pH is accompanied by a simultaneous increase in plasma cyclic AMP concentrations (p less than 0.05) as well as a tissue cyclic AMP in the region of the fundus (p less than 0.001). By contrast, no significant change was seen regarding antropyloric AMP. As a result, it is felt that cyclic AMP does not play a direct role in the secretion of gastrin by G cells but is a mediator of the mechanism of action of gastrin in terms of the secretion of HCl by the parietal cell.
A newborn girl with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome and 46, XX, del (4) (p15) de novo karyotype is described. Unusual pathologic and histologic findings were observed at autopsy in the cardiovascular, respiratory, alimentary, and urogenital systems. Of over 100 cases reported in the literature, only 18 include pathologic findings.
Zinc, cobalt and selenium concentrations were determined in tunics, vitreous and lens of the eyes of 17 infants who died during the neonatal period. Significantly higher concentrations of the measured elements were found in the vitreous. The tunics contained more zinc and cobalt than the lens, while the latter contained more selenium.

"Ethibloc" is a zeine-alcohol suspension which polymerizes in an aqueous medium after approximately 15 minutes. The product was injected in the pancreatic duct of 20 dogs. The procedure was free from complications, apart from the development of edematous pancreatitis without clinical manifestations. Healthy pancreases were transformed into fibrous organs within ten days or so, as is found in advanced stages of chronic pancreatitis. No effect occurred on the islets of Langerhans and a diabetes of the experimental type did'nt develop. "Ethibloc" would therefore appear to be of value in humans for the treatment of chronic pancreatitis, in order to reduce the period for transformation of the lesions without increasing the incidence of complications, and also for pancreatic fistulae of various origins, as a result of the rapid sclerosis of exocrine tissue that it provokes.

The effect of excess ascorbic acid on the epiphyseal plate of young guinea pigs receiving prednisolone over a period of 28 days has been investigated. The results show that the structural and morphologic changes caused in the epiphyseal plate of the animals receiving prednisolone are prevented by the simultaneous administration of excess ascorbic acid. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that pharmacological doses of ascorbic acid given concurrently to children receiving prolonged treatment with corticosteroids may prevent suppression of growth in these children.
Colon resection with immediate ileo-colonic or colo-colonic anastomosis without temporary praeternatural anus was carried out in 42 patients with serious complications of malignant and benign diseases of the colon. In 33% a leakage of the anastomosis occurred with a lethality of 16.6%. With regard to this high rate of complications and high lethality the authors hold that the so-called "ideal" colectomy has to be discarded with exception of very seldom cases and the two-stage operation has to be preferred absolutely.
The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Fe and Mg in fingernails of 212 normal children, 109 males and 103 females, 6--11 years old, were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. A wide scatter of results in all trace element determinations in fingernails was found. Nevertheless, it was noted that the petrographical composition of the region influences the trace element concentration in fingernails. An age variation was observed for Cu and Fe. Nail concentrations of the same trace elements were significantly higher in male than in female children.

The concentrations of total free amino acids, ammonia and protein in sweat of 44 children, 20 males, and 24 females, 6 to 8 years old, were determined. The children were divided into three groups according to their height, weight, and body weight/height ratio; group I children had heights and weights below the 10th percentile for their age, group II had heights and weights between the 10th and 90th percentile, and group III had heights and weights above the 90th percentile. Sweating was induced by allowing the child to be moderatley active. The temperature at the time of the experiment was 31 to 33 C and the relative humidity 48%. The mean concentrations of total free amino acids (mg/100 ml) in sweat from groups I, II, and III children were 318.9 +/- 52.5, 293.9 +/- 82.9 and 265.1 +/- 57.0, respectively. Alanine, glycine, phenylalanine, threonine, and serine were the principal amino acids in sweat. The concentrations of ammonia in the sweat of group I, II, and III children were 6.90 +/- 2.97, 2.35 +/- 0.81, and 1.17 +/- 0.48 mg/100 ml, respectively. Protein concentrations were 44.15 +/- 14.07, 40.70 +/- 16.60, and 35.75 +/- 5.46 mg/100 ml, respectively.

Clinical indications, operative findings, technical details and pathological studies in 228 Billroth-I-Pean gastrict resections for gastric ulcer, are represented in detail. 186 of these patients could be followed up with a maximum of 18 years: 8.6% had troubles after meals, 8.6% gastritis of the remaining stump, 5.9% a small stomach syndrome and 0.5% a reflux oesophagitis. But no one of them had to be reoperated nor for functional troubles, nor for recurrent ulceration. According to the Visick classification the following results have been obtained: V. 1:75.3%, V. 2:13.4%, V. 3:7.5% and V.4:3.7%.

A study of the pituitary gonadal axis was undertaken in 18 male patinets with thalassemia major and 41 normal males, in order to define the cause of the sexual infantilism frequently seen in children affected by this illness. The plasma testosterone level was measured before as well as after stimulatioing prepubertal, pubertal and postpubertal age. Significant findings were an insufficient secretion of gonadotropins as well as low testosterone level in patients of pubertal and post-pubertal age. A normal response of testes to HCG stimulation was also observed.
