Trace elements (zinc, cobalt, selenium, rubidium, bromine, gold) in human placenta and newborn liver at birth.

Concentrations of zinc, cobalt, selenium, rubidium, bromium, and gold have been determined by neutron activation analysis in 18 placental and 6 liver tissue samples at birth. Their respective mean concentrations +/- standard deviations (parts per million) were 58 +/- 10, 0.060 +/- 0.036, 1.90 +/- 0.41, 14.0 +/- 3.5, 26.9 +/- 14.3, and 0.31 +/- 0.14 in placenta, and 651 +/- 257, 0.156 +/- 0.077, 4.52 +/- 1.96, 9.2 +/- 3.7,11.2 +/- 4.1, and 0.12 +/- 0.06 in liver tissue. Thus, we observed that the mean concentrations of essential trace elements (zinc, cobalt, and selenium) were significantly higher in liver than in placenta, whereas the nonessential trace elements (rubidium, bromium, and gold) were found in significantly higher concentrations in placenta than in liver tissue.

Estimation of gestational age in the neonate: a comparison of clinical methods.

A combined evaluation of almost all the proposed morphologic and neurologic criteria for estimating gestational age in the neonate was performed on 710 newborns of 28 to 44 weeks' gestation. It is concluded that (1) the neurologic criteria used by Dubowitz et al in combination with the external (morphologic) criteria of Farr et al give very accurate results of estimation of the gestational age; (2) equally accurate results can be obtained if those criteria with the lowest correlation coefficients--namely, are and leg recoil, degree of edema, and appearance of the genitalia--are omitted; and (3) the use of only nine external criteria, the assessment of which is easier to perform on sick babies, gives an estimation of gestational age that is accurate for clinical purposes (r=0.878).

Appendicular mucocele and peritoneal pseudo-myxoma.

From 2 personal cases the authors present a pathological appraisal of appendicular mucoceles. They distinguish between a benign kind with an atrophic mucous membrane and a malignant type with a hyperplasic epithelium arranged in papillary and vegetating structures; this is a neoplasm with local malignancy. This variety remains the most liable to become a peritoneal pseudo-myxoma representing the most serious complication of the appendicular mucecele. Treatment of the mucocele, which consists in an appenicectomy or a right bemi-colectomy, usually yields good results provided operative rupture can be avoided. Contrarily the peritoneal pseudo-myxoma remains a serious disease with a disappointing treatment.
