The authors present a work intended to assess the effects of lumbar sympathectomy using radioactive microspheres. These contain 99mTe and are injected into the femoral artery. The distribution of radioactivity is then measured at the lower limb with a gamma camera linked to a computer. Seventeen patients were tested before and after lumbar sympathectomy. It appears from this short series that lumbar sympathectomy causes a redistribution of the radioactive material directed towards the extremities, mainly the feet.
99Tcm is chosen for labelling erythrocytes for vascular imaging to take advantage of the physical properties of the radionuclide. A new procedure is described which belongs to the category of pre-treatment methods using a kit. Stannous pyrophosphate is the specific reducing reagent. The technique is easier than already published methods: it consists of adding the above reagent to 2 ml. of heparinized blood, waiting five minutes and discarding the serum after centrifugation, then adding the radioactivity required as 99TcmO4. Labelling yield is superior to 95 per cent. The influence of technetium concentration of the pertechnetate solution on the labeling yield is evaluated and compensated by a slight adjustment of tin concentration when necessary. In vitro and in vivo stability studies show that 99Tcm-labelled red cells are suitable for determination of red cell volume, spleen and placental imaging, particularly in emergencies and in paediatrics.

Mutations affecting developmental processes may allow some insight into the complexity of the biological processes involved. In mice, two mutants that affect myelin formation in the central nervous system, jimpy and shiverer, have proved to be useful models for the study of this process. The predominant proteins in myelin are the major myelin proteolipid (PLP) and the myelin basic proteins (MBP), which together account for 80-90% of total myelin proteins. It has recently been shown that the shiverer mutation is located in the MBP structural gene, but the site of the jimpy mutation, which is X-chromosome-linked and may be similar to the sex-linked dismyelinization human disease, Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease, remains unclear. Here we provide evidence, based on a combined genetic and biochemical approach, that the sex-linked recessive mutation jimpy is located in the structural gene coding for PLP.

The pulmonary scintigraphy with xenon 133. On its interest in the pre-operative exploration of the kyphoscoliotic youth's lung function before vertebral arthrodesis. The classical functional lung exploration (spirometry, arterial blood gas) gives only a general aspect of the pulmonary function. On the other hand, the pulmonary scintigraphy with Xe 133 studying perfusion as well as ventilation gives into evidence some troubles concerning the distribution of the regional lung volumes together with a general or local increase of the lung on the scoliotic convex side; the base of the latter, whose volume is more important, is the seat of a physiological dead space. The lung on the scoliotic concave side shows a proportional reduction of perfusion and ventilation. We consider this investigation, harmlessly and easily carried out, as essential to observe the evolution of the young scoliotic patients' lung function.
The role of cell division in the spontaneous development of antisheep PFC in cultures of mouse peritoneal cells has been studied. Mitotic index measurement showed that most PFC were not recruited by division. LPS (a blastogenic and mitogenic substance) increased the number of PFC much more than it increased the number of mitosis. X-ray-irradiation of the donor mice did not affect the kinetics of PFC development. It was, therefore, concluded that PFC recruitment in mouse PC in culture was essentially related to cell differentiation, cell division playing only a minor role.
