Vibrotactile device in patients with single-channel cochlear implant: a preliminary study.

Two patients who had been using 3-M Vienna extracochlear implants were given two-channel KS Sensoraid vibrotactile units to wear for 1 month. At the end of that period, several tests commonly used to assess cochlear implant function were administered to compare the effectiveness of the vibrotactile system with that of the cochlear implants. The results obtained from the vibrotactile devices were encouraging, although the units had some shortcomings. Overall, the subjects' test scores with the vibrotactile units were comparable to, if not slightly better than, those with the extracochlear implants.

Bekesy test results in patients with eighth-nerve lesions. Forward reverse- and fixed-frequency tracings.

Sweep-frequency Bekesy tracings, both forward (low to high frequency) and reverse (high to low frequency), as well as fixed-frequency tracings, were obtained from 18 patients who had eighth-nerve tumors (subsequently confirmed surgically). In general, reverse-sweep frequency tracings revealed greater adaptation for continuous tone stimuli than did forward-sweep frequency tracings. However, if a search for excess adaptation (greater than 20 dB) is the sole purpose for administering Bekesy audiometry to a given patient, then fixed-frequency tracings yield adequate differential information.

Paget's disease and hearing loss.

Hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo have long been associated with Paget's disease of the bone. We reviewed the records of 463 patients with Paget's disease who were seen in the otolaryngology department. Hearing loss was common. It was our observation that mixed hearing losses were part of the disease process. Sensorineural hearing loss was the most frequent loss, but it usually was not part of the disease process. Tinnitus, vertigo, or both were seen in about 20% of these patients.
