Amino acid sequence analysis of the proteolytic cleavage products of the bovine immunodeficiency virus Gag precursor polypeptide.

Bovine immunodeficiency virus Gag proteins were purified from virions, and their amino acid sequences and molecular masses were determined. The matrix, capsid, and nucleocapsid (MA, CA, and NC, respectively) and three smaller proteins (p2L, p3, and p2) were found to have molecular masses of 14.6, 24.6, and 7.3 and 2.5, 2.7, and 1.9 kDa, respectively. The order of these six proteins in the Gag precursor, Pr53gag, is NH2-MA-p2L-CA-p3-NC-p2-COOH. In contrast to other retroviral MA proteins, the bovine immunodeficiency virus MA retains its N-terminal methionine and is not modified by fatty acids. In addition, the bovine immunodeficiency virus NC migrates as a 13-kDa protein in denaturing gel electrophoresis; however, its molecular mass was determined to be 7.3 kDa.

Surgical treatment of traumatic lesions of the middle and lower cervical spine with Roy-Camille plates.

The authors report their experience in surgical treatment of traumatic lesions of the middle and lower cervical spine using the Roy-Camille method, discussing in detail the mechanism of injury according to the previously reported classification as well as the surgical technique. Special mention is given to the treatment of separation fracture of the articular mass and the results achieved with the "en-tuile" plate. The authors conclude that the Roy-Camille method yields satisfactory short and long-term results provided that the indications are closely followed.

Vertebral rotation during the initial stages of scoliosis: the costovertebral interaction mechanism.

The authors analyse the costovertebral joint mechanism related to vertebral rotation in cases of idiopathic scoliosis and compare them to analogous clinical costal asymmetry caused by asymmetrical vertebral growth in the absence of scoliosis. In the opinion of the authors, it is the different mechanism of costal leverage that is the basis of the various aspects of thoracic deformity both in idiopathic scoliosis and in growth asymmetry.

Lesions of the spine in heroin addicts.

The authors present 6 cases of spinal lesions in heroin addicts--3 infective, 3 traumatic. The striking feature about all these cases is the comparative absence of spinal symptoms. This underlines the importance of accurate and early diagnosis in these subjects.
