Heat Shock Protein 27 is overexpressed in the skin of bitumen exposed workers. Early observations.

The skin of road pavers is exposed to a large number of compounds such as asphalt, bitumen, amines, polymers, oils, solvents, sand, gravel, crushed rock, mineral wad, ultraviolet light and heat. In order to verify an up-regulation of HSP27, determined by the above mentioned stimuli, we studied, immunohistochemically, the forearm skin of a sample of road pavers occupationally exposed. A total of 25 punch biopsies (3 mm diameters) was obtained from the foream skin of road paver workers (n=16) and a control group (n=5) not exposed. Specimens were sectioned (thickness: 3-4 micron ) and processed for immunohistochemistry. For localization of HSP27, a mouse anti-HSP27 monoclonal antibody was used. In punch biopsies of bitumen exposed workers, HSP27 immunostaining was hemogeneously detected in the whole epidermis including basal cell layer. Immunoreaction products were observed mostly in cytoplasm but also in nuclei. Staining intensity was stronger (grade 3 or 4) than that revealed in normal skin sample.

A comparative study: TTS Vs wave V after exposure to noise.

The pattern of recovery from noise exposure was monitored, with regards to the behaviour and electrophysiology in 25 normal-hearing subjects, at 4 KHz frequency for 30 min. Fatiguing stimulus was an octave band noise with centre frequency of 3 KHz. Subject's behaviour following to the auditory fatigue was studied by temporary threshold shift (TTS) paradigm. In the electrophysiological study, the auditory fatigue was measured as a shift of the wave V latency in the auditory brainstem responses (ABR) after noise exposure. This shift was measured at 40 dB nHL stimulus intensity ("Logon" with centre frequency at 4 KHz). The ABR recordings started immediately after cessation of noise exposure and threshold measurements 2 min later. The recovery of latency shift began immediately after the exposure and ended faster than the auditory threshold. From a practical point of view it means that in order to measure maximal values of latency shift, the ABR recordings should be performed immediately after cessation of noise exposure.

[Work and video terminals: eye discomfort and blepharitis. Preliminary data].

Blefaritis is one of the most common ocular disorders encountered in clinical practice. The clinical manifestation primarily occurs along the lid margin, and the predominant symptoms are itching and burning. In addition, the inflammation could cause a dysfunction of meibomian gland; this condition leads to ocular surface abnormalities. Objective of the present study was to determine if the Visual Display Terminals (VDT) work get worse the signs and symptoms of blefaritis in a group of 35 VDT operators. Results showed a correlation between burning, itching and corneal fluorescein staining and hour number a day of VDT work in the workers affected by blefaritis. The Authors concluded that VDT work can get worse the signs and symptoms of blefaritis.

Evaluation of fitness for work: the most challenging situations.

Evaluation of fitness for work (FW) is the final task of both health surveillance and risk evaluation. It's aim is to protect the physical and psychological health of workers and respect their professional skills. The Occupational Physician faces several difficulties in the evaluation of FW. Moreover, Italian legislation on this topic can be variously interpreted and this can cause conflicting evaluations. In this session, the most challenging situations in FW evaluation will be taken into consideration.

[Changes induced by auditive monoaural and binaural fatigue in TTS and the auditory brainstem response latency].

The purpose of the research was to study the TTS values and latency of fifth wave Auditory Brainstem Response in human monaural and binaural fatigue, using auditory evoked potentials. From the results obtained in 12 volunteers, it is concluded that during exposure to auditory fatigue, if only one ear is protected, the unprotected ear is subject to a greater hearing loss than would be expected with both ears unprotected. The practical implication of these conclusions is that subjects with unilateral hearing loss occupationally exposed to noise run a greater risk for the healthy ear than subjects with normal hearing.
