Escalation of aggression: experimental studies.

A finding commonly obtained in research using the Buss "aggression machine" is a main effect for trail blocks, indicating an escalation in shock intensity over trails. Theoretical explanations for this effect were tested in a modified verbal operant-conditioning situation. In Experiment 1, subjects could administer any of 10 levels of positive reinforcement to a "learner" for correct verbal responses or any of 10 levels of negative reinforcement to a learner for incorrect responses. Half of the subjects were required to begin with weak, half with strong, reinforcements. Results indicated that, regardless of condition, subjects gave more intense reinforcements as the learning trails progressed. Those who administered negative reinforcements devalued the learner relative to those who administered positive reinforcements. In Experiment 2, a role-playing procedure was used in which subjects administered either positive or negative reinforcements to a learner whose performance either did or did not improve over trials. Again, in all experimental groups, subjects administered increasingly intense reinforcements over trials. The results are interpreted as supporting a disinhibition theory of anti- and prosocial behavior.

Use of a new malleable implant as a bone substitute in maxillofacial surgery.

Biocompatible osteoconductive polymer (BOP) has been used since 1979 as a substitute for bone in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery. To date, in maxillofacial surgery, loss of bone volume as a result of either trauma or osteoporosis has been compensated for by autologous bone onlay graft or subperiosteal apposition grafts of synthetic materials. Neither of these solutions is entirely satisfactory. Autologous bone is subject to reabsorption, requiring initial overcorrection and multiple reoperations to achieve an acceptable result. Preshaped implants of Proplast, Vicryl, Gore-Tex, or silicone do not offer much flexibility, and coral granules and hydroxyapatite are difficult to handle. Finally, all foreign materials can elicit problems with tolerability. In its SP (solution/powder) form, BOP is a paste that can be molded precisely to the required shape, making it ideal for maxillofacial surgery. This study examined the long-term tolerability and facial alterations after implants of BOP in 11 patients who underwent post-trauma and cosmetic surgery.

[Endocrine polyadenomatosis with carcinoid tumor].

The authors review 26 cases of multiple endocrine tumours with presence of a carcinoid tumour. In 44% the carcinoid was localised to the bronchus, in 20% of cases to the small intestine or duodenum. In 76% of cases during multiple endocrine tumours, the carcinoid appeared in embryological derivatives of the anterior part of the intestine. No carcinoid syndrome was reported. The difficulty of histological distinction has led to the description of carcinoid islet cell tumours. These facts fit in with the APUD concept.

[Changes in Achilles tendon reflex under influence of non endocrine factors].

Numerous physiopathological processes such as diurnal variations sex, age, pregnancy, muscular effort, diseases and drugs modify the Achilles reflexogram. Their multiplicity explains the difficulty of general interpretation of changes in the reflexogram which bring into play the energy reserves of the muscle cell and its potassium content.

[Eosinophilia and respiratory function in the asthmatic (author's transl)].

Total eosinophil count (TEC) was done in 13 normal subjects, in 8 subjects before and 90 mn after a "French" breakfast and in 29 asthmatic patients. The geometric mean is higher (p less than 0,001) in asthmatic than in normal subjects: 304 (231--391) versus 144 (101--197). The breakfast does not interfer with the result of the TEC. In asthmatic subjects, a significant inverse correlation appears (r = 0,57, p less than 0,01) between the logarithm of TEC and the quotient: formula; see text. This correlation persists whatever may be the subject's age, the duration of the asthma or age at which he first contracted the illness. Asthma appeared after 40 years in 4 of the subjects: their TEC was higher (p less than 0,01) than in subjects who had become asthmatic before the age of forty. The respiratory function was lowered more in these 4 patients than in others who had been ill for the same time (p less than 0,001). The TEC is not related to results of skin testine with usuel inhalant allergens (grass pollen, house dust, cat's or dog's dander) or by result of a provocation test (by inhalation of allergen). Eosinophilia and bronchial obstruction are connected by one (or more) factors that may be inhalant allergens in extrinsec asthma and circulating immune complexes in intrinsec asthma.
