[Therapy and treatment results of cervical cancer in the Medical School of the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena from 1965 to 1976 (report on 1453 cases)].

In this paper, therapeutic results of 1,453 cervical cancer patients stage T1-T4 who have been treated at the Gynaecological Hospital and the Radiological Hospital of Jena University are reported. The overall Five-Year Survival Rate amounted to 68.4 per cent. Surgical and radiological therapeutic measures are demonstrated with regard to their development and to side effects between 1965 and 1983. As a consequence of the results obtained the necessity for treating cervical cancer patients in a cancer center has to be stressed.

[Mesopharynx cancers--multifactorial malignancy analysis and therapeutic results].

Multi-step check method of the diagnosis of malignancy is applied as a synthesis of results of staging, histological classification, histopathological and histochemical grading, to 210 squamous cell carcinomas of the mesopharynx. Among the examined carcinomas, extended tumours were predominant (61%) (T3; T4). No definite relationship between size and prognosis of the tumours was seen. 81% of the carcinomas had regional lymph node metastases. Their rate of cure (41%) was lower than that of the carcinomas without metastases. Histological grading showed that prognosis of the G 1-carcinomas was superior to that of the G 3-carcinomas. Definite histological grading also enabled clear gradation of malignancy of G 2-carcinomas and carcinomas of the lymphatic tissue after histochemical grading. 5-year survival rate of all the therapy results were found after radical resection (50%) and after combined surgical irradiation therapy (63%). The survival rate of the patients with exclusive irradiation therapy was lower (29%).

[Results of treatment of cervical malignancies at the Medical Department of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena 1965-1976. III. Comparison of results of telecobalt postoperative radiotherapy with conventional roentgen irradiation].

Results and secondary effects of postoperative radiation therapy by telecobalt and conventional x-rays at 589 female patients with malignoma of the cervix are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of both methods are analysed critically. The 5-years-survival rates are 78,6% respectively 87,0%.

[Treatment results with malignant cervical cancer in the Department of Medicine of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in 1965 to 1976. IV. An evaluation of primary radiological therapy via contact and percutaneous irradiation].

414 patients with cervical carcinoma were treated by radiation only because of local or general inoperability. The 5-years-survival of these patients was 50.7%. The importance of primary irradiation in treatment of carcinoma of cervix is pointed out. Kind and frequency of side effects of the several different methods of radiation are investigated. Alterations of the rectum were the most common complication and especially frequent, if both x-ray radiation and local radiological therapy (radium, cobalt60 , caesium137 ) were performed. The therapy with percutane telecobalt in combination with local radioactive sources was followed by a small rate of complications.

Influence of impairment of the immune system on hepatic biotransformation reactions, their postnatal development and inducibility.

Neither destruction of thymus by N-methylnitrosourea or by X-rays nor thymectomy or splenectomy in rats of different ages affected hexobarbital sleeping time, ethylmorphine N-demethylation or ethoxycoumarin O-deethylation significantly and systematically. Thymectomy or thymus destruction by x-rays of newborn rats did not significantly influence postnatal development or inducibility by phenobarbital of the monooxygenase reactions.

[Studies of the cell cycle of experimental animal tumors following X-ray treatment].

With the aim to contribute to optimized radiotherapy the proliferation kinetic parameters in experimental animal tumors were determined. As compared to non-radiated tumors, a single X-ray dose of 3 Gy accelerated the time course of the mitotic cycle which may be interpreted as a repair response. In contrary, following a single irradiation with 12 Gy the mitotic phases were delayed in their temporal course. Surprisingly, fractionated irradiations of these tumors yielded significantly less favorable results (no tumor regression, shorter rates of survival) in comparison with those after a single high X-ray dose. Obviously, this is due to a great share of hypoxic tumor cell areas in solid Ehrlich carcinomas which cannot irreversibly be impaired by low radiation doses.

[Results of the treatment of cervical cancer at the Department of Medicine of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena 1965-1976. I. Surgical therapy only].

The early stages of the cervical carcinoma require a different treatment after special diagnostic measures to prevent therapeutic lesions or overtreatment. In this paper therapeutic results are reported obtained from 269 patients with cervical carcinoma category T1 which were operated on without any other therapeutic measures from 1965 to 1976. - Five-year survival rates were 97 per cent. The results show that the new trend for malignant diseases: as conservative as possible and as radical as necessary, didn't increase the risk of recurrence. The change from vaginal radical hysterectomy to hysterectomy in stage Ia or abdominal radical hysterectomy in stage Ib improved the results of treatment.

[Results of the treatment of cervical cancer at the Department of Medicine of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena 1965-1976. II. Combination of surgery and percutaneous radiation therapy].

Based on a material of 1502 patients with carcinoma of cervix uteri, treated between 1965 and 1976 in gynaecological-radiological teamwork in the Department of Medicine at the University of Jena, we report on 304 cases of primary operation and following radiation therapy with telecobalt. The 5-year-survival rate of all cases in this group is 78,6%, the rate of recurrences 14,1%.

[The problem of preoperative radiotherapy of renal adenocarcinomas from the viewpoint of tumor biology].

Tumour biological examinations were carried out on 26 patients with pulmonary metastases of renal adenocarcinomas; growth functions were used to calculate the point in time at which metastases began to grow, in relation to the time of operation. The aim was to derive information on the indications for pre-operative radiation therapy. In 3 patients out of 26 (11.5%) there is an indication for pre-operative irradiation. For comparative clinical tests on the value of pre-operative irradiation a minimum of 871 patients are needed in each group for comparison to evaluate the 3-year survival rate and 489 patients to evaluate the 5-year survival rate in order to be certain of the positive effect of pre-operative irradiation with 1% statistical probability. Our examinations are to be considered as a model.
