Corneal endothelial damage associated with phacoemulsification.

Twenty-one cats underwent standard Kelman phacoemulsification procedures in their right eyes. The left eyes of the same amimals underwent a planned extracapsular cataract extraction or irrigation and aspiration for 15 minutes using the Kelman phacoemulsification unit. The corneal endothelium was evaluated at various times postoperatively using a stain for endothelial cell viability and scanning electron microscopy. The results suggested that the irrigation procedure alone is deleterious to the cat endothelium as is the rubbing of nuclear material against the endothelial cells. These two procedures caused additonal damage when combined in a routine phacoemulsification procedure.

X-linked congenital nystagmus: a problem in genetic counseling.

A pedigree with X-linked congenital nystagmus is presented. A mother wished information about prenatal sex determination. The large number of clinically affected female heterozygotes in the pedigree illustrates a potential problem in genetic counseling for this condition and possibly other X-linked disorders which affect the eye.

A randomized technique of constant-pressure infusion.

A population study of measured inflow values of eyes of a group of adult male rhesus monkeys was done with a randomized technique of constant-pressure infusion. Each eye was presented with a sequence of 18 4-minute runs, consisting of three infusion runs for each of six pressures, in which the order of appearance of a given pressure had been randomized. A statistical analysis of the results indicates that only the independent variables of infusion pressure, type of anesthetic, and position in the sequence of the 18 infusion runs had a significant effect upon measured inflow.

Centrioles and cilia in the mesothelial cells of the pericanalicular region.

An evaluation of 70 trabecular meshwork biopsies obtained at the time of therapeutic surgery in glaucomatous and cataractous eyes revealed that the mesothelial cells in the iridocorneal angle had a marked abundance of cilia and centrioles. The distribution of cells showing cilia and/or centrioles is positively correlated with the apparent aqueous humor outflow pathway. The morphology and arrangement of the cilia-centriole complexes in the angle are highly variable and show many forms not previously reported in a single tissue. There were no obvious correlations between organelle abundance and the identifiable factors affecting the patients involved in this study.

Effect of pilocarpine drops on the diurnal intraocular pressure variation in patients with glaucoma.

The diurnal intraocular pressure was measured in 14 eyes of patients with glaucoma while they were using no medication and compared to the diurnal pressures while they were using pilocarpine drops. During the 48 hour control period, the pressures measured every 3 hours by the non-contact tonometer had a mean value of 26 mm. Hg and a mean maximum diurnal variation of 18.5 mm. Hg. During the pilocarpine treatment period, the mean pressure and maximum diurnal variation dropped to 17 and 8.5 mm. Hg, respectively. The greatest pressure-lowering effect occurred between 9 A.M. and 6 P.M.
