[Stabilometry and definition of the threshold of galvanic vestibular stimulation in normal subjects: an experimental study].

The effect of the galvanic stimulation on the vestibular apparatus has been evaluated by registration on the postural deviations, using a stabilometry platform. We have studied the galvanic body-sway responses in a group of normal subjects, using a binauricolar bipolar stimulation, with the electrodes attached by means of surgical tape to the mastoid area. The records of body-sway responses have demonstrated in 80% of the considered cases a significant variation of all positional parameters after a current intensity of 2 mA, according the body sways toward the positive stimulus. At the same current intensity only five of the studied subjects have shown multidirectional swinging, in three cases joined with a subjective slight sway toward the ear stimulated with positive polarity. Therefore the galvanic test, joined with the posturography, proves to be a useful auxiliary method in vestibular investigation, allowing us to lower the threshold of galvanic stimulation and to make the electric stimulus better supported for the patient.

Clinical comparison of the anticalculus effect of two mouthrinses.

A three-month, double-blind clinical study was conducted to compare the effects of supragingival calculus deposits of a mouthrinse containing soluble pyrophosphate and a copolymer of methoxyethylene and maleic acid, as compared to a mouthrinse containing only soluble pyrophosphate and a placebo mouthrinse. Male and female adult subjects were stratified into three balanced groups according to baseline calculus scores obtained from a pre-test period. They received an oral prophylaxis and were assigned to the use of one of the three test mouthrinses. All subjects used a commercially available dentifrice containing 0.76% sodium monofluorophosphate in a silica base. The results from the three-month calculus examination indicated that the soluble pyrophosphate/copolymer mouthrinse reduced supragingival deposits by 31.70% (P less than 0.03), as compared to the placebo mouthrinse. The mouthrinse containing only soluble pyrophosphate did not provide a statistically significant reduction in calculus deposits, as compared to the placebo mouthrinse.

[Experimental research on maculo-ampullar interactions in normal subjects].

The AA. investigated 20 normal subjects to evaluated the influence of the otolith organ on the nystagmus, induced by angular accelerations in centrifugal and eccentric rotations. The nystagmus has been recorded by electronystagmostical analysis. The results show that centrifugal and eccentric tests reduce the nystagmus intensity and particularly the amplitude, duration and slow-phase velocity during the per-rotatory accelerations. These findings confirm that the macular activity may inhibit the nystagmus reactions induced by angular acceleration.

[Effects of flunarizine on positional nystagmus].

The anti-vertigo activity of the flunarizine on the positional nystagmus has been evaluated in 30 subjects suffering from central or peripheral labyrinthine disorders. The medication was given only once at the dose of 10 mg and its activity was evaluated by means of electronystagmographic recording six hours after drug intake. In 9 cases the positional nystagmus, classified according to Nylèn was the first type, in 13 subjects it was the second type and 8 cases had the third type. The drug determined the inhibition of the positional nystagmus in 53% of the subjects and an evident reduction in 27% of the cases. These effects were most evident both in the central lesions and in the I and III type of the positional nystagmus. In the remaining cases (20%) the differences between the nystagmus recorded before and after treatment with flunarizine were not significant.

[Spontaneous nystagmus caused by barbiturates in normal subjects].

The authors studied in the normal subjects the barbiturate nystagmus to standardize a procedure for testing the brain stem activity involved in nystagmogenetic pathways. An electronystagmographic study has been carried out on 13 subjects suffering from extraotological surgical diseases after in venam injection of 20 mg/min of Pentothal, to anaesthetic induction. The spontaneous nystagmus was changeable at the beginning and almost regular in the culmination phase. The authors believe that in this phase the barbiturate nystagmus is useful as a test of brain stem activity in subjects suffering from central dizziness.

[Role of the markers PAP-PSA in the diagnosis of cancer of the prostate].

The Authors report their personal experience relating to diagnostic screening for prostatic carcinoma using serum assays for specific markers of this tumour: prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) and prostatic specific antigen (PSA). They underline the importance of high serum values of these substances, especially in tumors in an advanced state, and point out that these markers can play a role both in the diagnosis and in the follow-up of prostatic carcinoma.

[Herpetic vestibular neuronitis: a hypothesis].

Abundant experimental research has shown the potentially damaging effects that the herpes simplex virus (HSV) may have on peripheral or central nervous pathways. Fifty subjects (ages 20-45) with labial herpes virus (HSV-1) and 15 (ages 25-35) with genital herpes virus (HSV-2) were studied through recording spontaneous and optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and using the eye-tracking-test (ETT) by means of electronystagmography (ENG). Recording was carried out during the first two days after vesicular eruption and seven days later, when cutaneous manifestations had disappeared. Thirty-five of the 50 subjects with HSV-1 showed spontaneous nystagmus, frequently with a vertical component, which in most cases had disappeared by the seventh control day. We recorded qualitative alterations of OKN as well as ETT in 19 patients while in 3 subjects only ETT was abnormal. All the subjects were normal on the seventh control day. At no time did any of the patients with HSV-2 show objective signs involving the peripheral or central vestibular system. Our research shows that HSV infection, especially HSV-1 infection, determines subclinical alterations of the vestibular function, probably due to the involvement of the brainstem. Therefore the virus is to be taken into account in establishing the etiology of "unknown" vertigo.
