[Complications imminent in patients with salmonellosis].

In 1038 patients with salmonellosis treated in the last 20 years in Department of Infectious Diseases, Medical School, Białystok and literature data defined, distribution and type of complications and consequences these diseases. In acute period of salmonellosis complications are: hypovolemic or infectious and toxic shock, metabolic acidosis, circulation collapse and ileus paralytic. As a late complications are mentioned organs changes and anemias. Salmonellosis nowadays may exist as a complications diseases with immunodeficiency (AIDS).

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

Activity of specific IgG, IgM and IgE antibodies in human trichinellosis.

The activity of IgG, IgM and IgE antibodies to somatic antigen of Trichinella spiralis in the sera of patients with trichinellosis at various intervals after infection was examined by means of ELISA. Mathematical analysis of the dose-response curves was used. Elevated level of IgG and IgM antibodies of relatively high avidity and of rather low IgE avidity was documented. Amount or avidity of IgG antibodies was found to be most useful for the diagnosis of trichinellosis (85% positive results in patients' sera). The isotype of IgM avidity constitutes a better diagnostic value than the amount of it (60% and 35% of positive results, respectively).

Adult

[Appendicitis and its atypical causes].

The authors analysed 2849 patients who were admitted to the Department of General Surgery, Regional Hospital in Pisz in the years 1980-1989 with symptoms suggestive of appendicitis. In 983 cases surgical intervention was abandoned, because the symptoms regressed spontaneously or were caused by diseases of other organs. The pathological conditions associated with appendicitis are analysed in 1866 surgically treated patients. Cases of appendicitis caused by Oxyuris vermicularis, Salmonella-enteritidis and actinomycosis (one case each) and appendicular carcinoma (2 cases) are described in more detail. Attention is called to the aetiology, pathogenesis and treatment of these rare causes of appendicitis.

Actinomycosis

[Incidence of so-called hepatic failure syndrome in relation to infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) in epidemiological and environmental studies of the rural population in the Suwałki and Białystok regions 1978-1990].

In years 1979-1991 has been analysed the selected health epidemiological indices is related with liver pathology and viral hepatitis B infections in rural population of Białystok region. In 11,086 analysed persons of an agricultural sector the frequency of antigenemia HBs (0.25-2.5%) was higher that in control groups of urban populations (0.3-0.6%). In 12 years time period observation of chronic hepatopathy syndrome, demonstrated the increased tendency with parallel pathologic increased values of serum A1AT activity and with increased tendency of HBs antigenemia.

Adolescent

[Risk of development of hepatitis B virus infection among alcoholics].

The frequency of incidence of positive serological markers of hepatitis B virus infection among a population of alcoholics in the region of Białystok has been analysed. It was demonstrated that the highest frequency of detection of hepatitis B virus infection appears in a group of patients with post-alcoholic liver cirrhosis (60 percent). Acute virus hepatitis of the B type in alcoholics is characterised by a tendency towards retarded seroconversion of HBe antigen to HBe antibody with a subsequent development of chronic infection and liver cirrhosis.

Alcoholism

[Strongyloidiasis and its current treatment].

A case of strongyloidosis and giardiasis was observed in a women aged 62 years. The treatment included tinidazole, metronidazole and ercefuryl. Modern views on the epidemiology, clinical course and therapy of this parasitic infestation are discussed.

Antinematodal Agents

[Toxocariasis].

Up to present time the data concerning toxocariasis++ have been presented. Toxocariasis++ is difficult for diagnosis because of lack of specificity and multiorgan changes due to the invasion by Toxocara canis or cati. We pay attention the problem distribution of this parasitosis in Poland and world is still actual especially among children. We have presented epidemiological data and means diagnosis of this diseases and the treatment patients and prophylaxis has been stressed.

Adult

[Serotonin and the immunologic reactivity of the body in taeniasis].

Blood serotonin level, 5-HIAA in 24 h urine, serum immunoglobulins-IgG, IgM, IgA, percentage of lymphocytes T and B in rosette test were ascertained in 3 groups of patients with taeniosis, treated with Radeverm (32 patients), Praziquantel (22 patients) and Yomesan (10 patients). Primary hyperserotoninemia and higher level of 5-HIAA in post-treatment values were not uniformly differentiated. The same tendency was observed in post-treatment values of immunoglobulins and lymphocytes T and B as compared with values before treatment.

Adult

[The behaviour of serotonin in blood, the activity of monoaminooxidase in serum and of 5-hydroxyindoloacetic acid in twenty-four hour urine in patients with viral hepatitis (author's transl)].

The level of serotonin in blood, the activity of MAO in serum and the value of 5-HIAA in 24 hour urine were estimated in 76 patients with viral hepatitis divided according to clinical parameters into three groups (mild, mild to severe and severe clinical course). A statistically significant increase of serotonin level in blood compared with the healthy control group was found. Highest values were observed in patients with the severe form of viral hepatitis. Decreased values of 5-HIAA in 24 hour urine in the early course of the disease showed a tendency to increase in later examinations. The activity of MAO in serum was significantly lowered in all clinical forms of viral hepatitis.

Adult

Injury of liver in experimental salmonellosis of rabbits infected by salmonella agona.

Liver injury was investigated in the course of salmonellosis evoked by Salmonella agona in experimental infection of rabbits. Histological and biochemical examination (proteinogram, the level of bilirubin, fibrinogen, cholesterol and its esters in blood, activity of asparine and alanine aminotransferases and alkaline phosphatase and guanase in blood) were carried out in 70 animals. Liver injury showing degeneration, steatosis and necrosis was found in the course of salmonellosis. Hepatitis gigantocellularis was sporadically observed. Biochemical parameters were not in correlation with the observed histological changes.

Animals

[The dynamics of humoral and cellular immunity changes in patients with acute phase of trichinellosis (author's transl)].

21 patients with acute trichinellosis have been studied. The behaviour of IgG, IgA and IgM in the serum of patients as well as the percentage of lymphocytes T and B was the aim of these studies. Statistically significant increase of IgG in serum has been observed since the third week of the clinical observation. During the whole period of observation the level of IgA was lowered--though the decrease was not statistically significant--whereas the level of IgM increased considerably. Decreased percentage of lymphocyte B in the peripheral blood during the first week of the clinical observation, later on increased significantly. The percentage of T lymphocyte was lowered during the whole period of the clinical observation of patients.

Acute Disease

[The dynamics of the immunocytoadherence test with Trichinella spiralis-antigen in the experimental rabbit trichinellosis (author's transl)].

The authors analysed the dynamics of the immunozytoadherence test in experimental trichinellosis. The evaluation was carried out by mixing the lymphocytes of the infected rabbits with sheep erythrocytes encoated with antigen Trichinella spiralis. In three groups of infected rabbits (group I - 15 000 larves per rabbit, group II - 20 000 larves per rabbit, group III - 30 000 larves per rabbit) the examinations were performed 3, 6, 10, 20, 47, 82, 110, 140, 170 and 230 days after infection. It was observed that the maximum percentage of rosette occurred 10 days after infection. In the course of the observation the percentage demonstrated a tendency to decrease. The observed dynamics of the immunozytoadherence test indicates its value in diagnostic and prognostic evaluation of trichinellosis.
