The articulation of nursing systems with dependent care systems of intergenerational caregivers.

Family members, especially adult children, provide the majority of care required by aging relatives. While there is a plethora of literature on family caregiving, generally, the intergenerational caregiving experience is not well documented. The purpose of this article is to explain the articulation of nursing systems with dependent care systems of intergenerational caregivers from three perspectives: (a) Orem's dependent care unit of service, (b) Taylor's interpretation of family as dependent care systems, and (c) Bowers' theory of intergenerational caregiving.

Using functional health patterns to predict outcome with seniors.

Two powerful forces in Canada's health care system today are the rapidly growing seniors population and the trend toward community care. Recently, five hospitals in southwestern Ontario initiated a program designed to avert the admission of seniors to hospital and provide them with supports at home to maintain their health. Simultaneous research was conducted to assess the impact and effectiveness of the program.

A practical approach to teaching nursing research.

Nurse educators often struggle to take the mystique out of research for undergraduate students. A learning experience to implement the research process at a level appropriate for senior nursing baccalaureate students presented itself during a community clinical practicum. Students who had completed a health assessment of a seniors retiree club identified lack of membership growth as a concern. Their instructor encouraged and helped them to investigate this problem further by applying research concepts. The experience demonstrates that nursing research can be incorporated successfully in the clinical area.

The Roy Adaptation Model. Health teaching about osteoporosis.

1. Osteoporosis has an impact on quality of life and places a financial strain on the health care system. Occupational health nurses can play a key role in health education about osteoporosis because they have the most frequent contact with at risk persons. 2. The Roy Adaptation Model presents a holistic approach for assessment of persons at risk and allows for planning of nursing interventions. 3. A concerted effort must be made to ensure persons at risk engage in health promoting strategies to decrease the incidence of the disease.

Jordanian nursing students' interpersonal behaviors.

The interpersonal behaviors of Jordanian nursing students (N = 536) in relation to type of nursing program, year and level, and gender were identified. The Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation Behavior Test (Schutz, 1978), a self-report questionnaire, was used to assess six dimensions of interpersonal behavior. The findings indicated that (a) there was no significant difference in the interpersonal behaviors of baccalaureate and diploma program nursing students, (b) male nursing students had more desire to control interpersonal relations than did female nursing students, and (c) third- and fourth-year nursing students had a greater need to associate with and become close to others than did first- and second-year nursing students. These findings have important implications for nursing curricula, the future status of male and female nurses, and the interpersonal relationships of nurses.

The challenge of accountability in nursing.

The authors examine the literature on accountability in nursing and analyze the following questions: What is meant by accountability in nursing? To whom are nurses accountable? For what should nurses be held accountable? Finally, the implications of accountability for the nursing profession are explored. In order for nursing to grow and develop as a profession based on sound theoretical foundations, nurses need to examine what it means to be truly accountable. The authors point out that accountability is a complex issue that requires nurses to examine their practice relative to the needs of healthcare consumers, their relationships with other healthcare professional, and the increasingly critical role of nursing in the healthcare system.

Faculty development: a transcultural experience.

A collaborative education program between Schools of Nursing at the Jordan University of Science and Technology and the University of Windsor, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), provides advanced clinical and theoretical education for Jordanian faculty and thus enriches the education of nursing students. This article describes the preparation of the faculty development proposal and the implementation of the project in a transcultural context, and identifies strengths and limitations of the project. Recommendations for effective strategies regarding international development in nursing education are made and a discussion of the benefits that ensued to both faculties is included.

Jordanian and Canadian nursing students' knowledge about AIDS.

With the current HIV/AIDS epidemic unchecked and as yet no known cure or vaccine, it is critical that students be prepared to care for AIDS patients. Thus nursing schools must teach them full data on the disease, prevention and universal precautions.
