Developing a programme-review process for a baccalaureate nursing programme in Jordan.

Abstract

Programme review is one way of monitoring the quality of a programme of study and promoting the growth of nursing education. The Faculty of Nursing at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) demonstrated its professional maturity by participating in an international collaborative project with the University of Windsor in Canada, to review its baccalaureate programmes. This article outlines the rationale for undertaking a programme review and discusses key principles for inclusion in the development of such a process. It highlights some strategies for success, and suggests ways in which programmes can benefit from reviews and evaluations. This process has the potential to be used as a prototype for future reviews.

Clinical environment as a learning environment: student nurses' perceptions concerning clinical learning experiences.

The aim of this study is to describe student nurses' perceptions of clinical learning experiences in the context of the clinical learning environment. We use the phenomenological approach by Colaizzi. The data was collected by unstructured interviews. Altogether 16 student nurses were asked to describe the significance of clinical learning experiences and good and bad learning experiences. Four elements sum up these clinical learning experiences: the appreciation and support the students received, the quality of mentoring and patient care, and students' self-directedness. Student nurses valued clinical practice and the possibilities it offered in the process of growing to become a nurse and a professional. A good clinical learning environment was established through good co-operation between the school and the clinical staff. It was concluded that the school should be able to provide a suitable clinical learning environment at the right time, so that theory and practice would complement each other. The teacher was the expert on nursing education, the aims set for each practice, as well as student nurses and their skills, but then again the nurse mentor knew the ward on which students were practicing. This was why collaboration between nurse mentors and nurse teachers was considered very necessary.

The "virtual family": an evaluation of an innovative approach using problem-based learning to integrate curriculum themes in a nursing undergraduate programme.

Students on a four-year BSc honours in nursing programme evaluated the use of fictional families within problem-based learning (PBL) scenarios. The use of "virtual families" allowed for various parts of the nursing curriculum to be developed in innovative ways. The students appreciated the advantages of using such families to study the longitudinal aspects of health care and family dynamics, and to aid the integration of course work elements. They commended the deeper understanding that they were able to develop and appreciated the realism of the holistic approach that this method introduced into the degree course. Recommendations for expanding the use of the virtual family in a PBL context are discussed. This approach is thought to offer potential in the teaching between disciplines and across cultures.

The changing division of labour between nurses and nursing assistants in New Brunswick.

BACKGROUND: In 1989, the professional nursing organization that represents nurses in New Brunswick adopted baccalaureate entry to practice in nursing. This decision coincided with a major restructuring of provincial health care. Consequently, there has been a reorganization of health care worker roles which affects nurses and nursing assistants. AIM: This paper explores the changing division of labour between nurses and nursing assistants in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. METHODS: The study used archival material, from the period 1978-1990, of three nursing organizations that played a significant role in initiating baccalaureate entry to practice. Interviews with 19 key people involved in the decision to upgrade nurse education were conducted. Data from the archival material and interviews were analysed jointly. FINDINGS: There are ongoing tensions between nurses and nursing assistants. Although nurses would like a support worker, they remain ambiguous about the role of nursing assistants in health care and which tasks should be delegated to this group. Nursing leaders are concerned about the ease with which some patient-related tasks are moved to nursing assistants. In the past, these concerns have led nursing leaders to attempt to limit nursing assistant responsibilities through both legislative means and ways of organizing nursing labour (primary nursing). As a result of health care reforms and baccalaureate entry to practice for nurses, nursing assistant responsibilities are currently expanding. CONCLUSION: Upgrading nurse education, which came into effect in 1996 with the closure of diploma schools in New Brunswick, is likely to entrench the role of nursing assistants in health care because of the economic value of their work during a period of restructuring and rationalization of health care.
