Comparison of MADS box gene expression in developing male and female flowers of the dioecious plant white campion.

The MADS box motif is common to genes that regulate the pattern of flower development. To determine whether MADS box genes also play a role in differentiation of the sexes in dioecious plants, we isolated cDNAs (SLM1 to SLM5, for Silene latifolia MADS) with MADS box homology from transcripts of male flower buds of the model dioecious species white campion and compared their expression in developing female and male flowers. SLM1 had extensive sequence similarity to the snapdragon MADS box gene PLENA, SLM2 to GLOBOSA, SLM3 to DEFICIENS, and both SLM4 and SLM5 were similar to SQUAMOSA. Each of the white campion MADS box genes was expressed in the same floral whorls as their respective most homologous snapdragon genes. The sex of the plant affected the pattern of SLM2 and SLM3 expression in the petal and stamen whorls, resulting in a smaller fourth whorl in male flowers than in female flowers. This was correlated with repressed gynoecium development in male flowers. The expression of SLM4 and SLM5 in both sexes differed from that of SQUAMOSA in one important aspect. Unlike SQUAMOSA, they were expressed in inflorescence meristems. This may reflect differences in growth pattern between white campion and snapdragon.

[Measurement of biting force of normal teeth at different ages].

The biting force value of normal teeth of 770 human subjects were measured by electric resistance strain gnathodynamometer. 365 were males, and 405 females. Their ages ranged from 13 to 49. The results showed that the biting force value of males is larger than that of the females (P < 0.01). In the males, the biting force value of those aged 13-16 gradually increased with age, and the maximal biting force values of incisor, bicuspid, and first molar of all the males were 43.3kg, 99.11kg, and 120.66kg respectively.

[Effect of yellow daphne on levels of plasma and decidual estradiol, prostaglandins, progesterone and its receptor in early pregnancy].

The changes of plasma concentration of estradiol (E2), progesterone (P) and prostaglandins (PG) and decidual level of prostaglandins and progesterone receptor (PR) after injection of Yellow Daphne for induction of abortion were observed. The results showed that the treatment with Yellow Daphne could induce degeneration and necrosis of decidual tissues as well as increase of PGE2 and PGF2 alpha concentration with lowering of PR level in the tissue. On the other hand, plasma level of PGE2 and PGF2 alpha remained unchanged and the levels of E2 and P declined. The data suggested that the contragestive mechanism of Yellow Daphne was mainly the involvement of decidual degeneration and the release of PG thus interfered the intrauterine environment for maintenance of pregnancy which subsequently led to abortion.

Anaerobic dechlorination of polychlorobiphenyls (Aroclor 1242) by pasteurized and ethanol-treated microorganisms from sediments.

A polychlorobiphenyl (PCB)-dechlorinating inoculum eluted from upper Hudson River sediments was treated with either heat or ethanol or both. The treated cultures retained the ability to dechlorinate PCBs (Aroclor 1242) under strictly anaerobic conditions. The dechlorination activity was maintained in serial cultures inoculated with transfers of 1% inoculum when the transferred inoculum was treated each time in the same manner. No methane production was detected in any treated culture, although dechlorination of PCBs in the untreated cultures was always accompanied by methane production. All treated cultures preferentially removed meta chlorines, yielding a dechlorination pattern characterized by accumulation of certain ortho- and para-subsituted congeners such as 2-4-chlorobiphenyl (2-4-CB), 2,4-2-CB, and 2,4-4-CB. In contrast, the untreated cultures showed more extensive dechlorination activities, which almost completely removed both meta and para chlorines from Aroclor 1242. These results suggest that microorganisms responsible for the dechlorination of PCBs in the upper Hudson River sediments can be grouped into two populations according to their responses to the heat and ethanol treatments. Microorganisms surviving the heat and ethanol treatments preferentially remove meta chlorines, while microorganisms lost from the enrichment mainly contribute to the para dechlorination activity. These results indicate that anaerobic sporeformers are at least one of the physiological groups responsible for the reductive dechlorination of PCBs. The selection of a dechlorinating population by such treatments may be an important step in isolation of PCB-dechlorinating microorganisms.

[The production of human monoclonal antibodies against Pseudomonas aeruginosa by human-mouse hybridoma technique].

The fusion of peripheral B lymphocytes from human immunized with P. aeruginosa polyvalent vaccine and mouse myeloma cell line SP2/0 was successfully performed. The rate of fusion was 74%(71/96) and the positive rate of antibody was 19.7%. Two hybridoma cell lines (A3 and F8) secreting McAb against P. aeruginosa were obtained after three times cloning by limiting dilution. The human chromosomes together with mouse chromosomes were discovered in karyotype assay of the hybrids. A3 and F8McAbs were human IgG by class determination. These MrcAbs could recognize 43 kd and 36 kd MW specific components of P. aeruginosa antigen by enzyme linked immuno-transfer blot technique.

[Effects of ursodeoxycholic acid on mechanical and electric activities in isolated guinea pig heart muscles].

Using electromechanical transducer and conventional microelectrodes in isolated guinea pig heart muscles, the effects of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) on the mechanical and electric activities were firstly observed. The results showed that, UDCA in dose of 0.05 mg/ml decreased contractile force by 36% (P less than 0.001) and shortened action potential duration (n = 3). It is inferred that UDCA may block inward calcium current. The results suggest that the action of UDCA is similar to that of bear bile and may be an effective composition of bear bile which acts on heart muscle. Our findings provide the experimental basis for the clinical application of UDCA.

[Studies on varietal resources of Chinese medicinal plants and their preservation].

The paper reviews the status of varietal resources of Chinese medicinal plants in China. The existing problems are analysed. Characteristics of these resources are dealt with. The results have shown that the study of varietal resources of Chinese medicinal plants must be strengthened for facilitating their production. Methods of varietal preservation of these plants are also discussed.
