Great Safety Performance: an improvement process using leading indicators.

The Great Safety Performance model uses leading indicators to drive injury prevention and provides a process to improve a company's safety outcomes by maximizing the conditions for safety within the workplace. The model asserts that leaders and workers need to jointly create conditions whereby everyone will know what to do, be able to do it, be equipped to do it, want to do it, and experience interactions that support safe performance in their job duties. These factors are referred to as the conditions for great performance. The Great Safety Performance model can serve as a vehicle to quantify, document, and demonstrate the efforts a company invests to create a safe workplace with safe work practices. By using the Great Safety Performance model, organizations can design and implement a variety of high leverage improvement initiatives specific to their business situations.

Internal and external consulting. Assisting clients with managing work, health, and psychosocial issues.

1. Consulting is the art of influencing people at their request. It means reaching a conclusion of acceptable quality, maintaining an acceptable commitment to that conclusion, supporting the client to prevent or minimize any detrimental outcomes as a result of the conclusion, and being perceived as helpful and efficient by the client. 2. Occupational and environmental health nurses are involved in a variety of consulting roles along with different types of consulting relationships, including both internal and external consulting. 3. To be an effective consultant, occupational and environmental health nurses need specialized knowledge and skills. Effective consultants work hard at developing sensitivity and competency to help others, and leave them self sufficient when the project is complete.

Organizational stressors and health. How occupational health nurses can help break the cycle.

1. Many organizations now suffer from a "toxic cycle of harm" in which organizational stressors manifest themselves as deteriorating employee health, productivity losses and escalating costs to the businesses. 2. Although by no means the only source of stress in people's lives, organizational stressors are identified as significant root causes of organizational health and wellness problems. 3. Measurement is key. Data are required for all the elements of the organizational stressors and health cycle to understand and identify how to solve health and business performance problems. 4. The issues of organizational stressors and health are complex and require both leadership commitment and a multidisciplinary approach. Occupational effectiveness consultants and senior management must work together to effect improvement.
