[Clear-cell carcinoma of the lung].

The paper describes electron microscopic results of examination of clear-cell pulmonary carcinoma in a man of 64. The presence of large amounts of glycogen in the tumor cells is typical for this malignancy and, according to the literature, is a diagnostic sign of clear-cell pulmonary carcinoma. The similarity between the ultrastructural characteristics of clear-cell pulmonary carcinoma and Clark cells suggests their possible genetic relationship.

[Role of electron microscopy in determining the degree of differentiation and cell type in oat cell carcinoma of the lung].

Ultrastructurally, small cell carcinoma of lung may be classified as follows: Type I -- undifferentiated small cell carcinoma in which cells do not show any ultrastructural signs of organ- or tissue-specific differentiation. Type II -- differentiated small cell carcinoma consisting of two groups of cells: undifferentiated (without ultrastructural organ-or tissue-specific features) and differentiated (with ultrastructural organ-or tissue-specific features). Type II may occur in different modifications depending on the variety of differentiated cells, e. g. endocrine, mucous, alveolocytic, squamous-cell, mixed, etc. Histologically, small cell carcinoma of lung is represented by a heterogenous group of tumors. Application of electron microscopy provides an objective and reliable means of identification of type and stage of differentiation of cells of this carcinoma.

[Rectal cancer (a differential electron microscopic diagnosis)].

A tumor of the rectum in a woman of 74 is described. The analysis of the tumor in light microscope suggested a low-differentiated cancer or melanoma. Electron microscopic examination of the tumor metastasis into a lymph node showed most of the tumor cells to have low differentiation and contain no ultrastructural organspecific markers. However, in the tumor cells comprising a small group, typical tonofibrils and desmosomes were found which substantiated the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma.

[Electron microscopy in the differential diagnosis of uterine sarcoma].

Three uterine sarcomas histologically diagnosed as differentiated leiomyosarcomas were studied electron microscopically for differential diagnosis. The study showed not all highly differentiated uterine sarcomas to be of myogenic origin. The histological diagnosis of differentiated leiomyosarcoma which consists mostly of spindle-shaped and elongated cells may often cover tumours of different histogenetic composition. In our material, electron microscopy established leiomyosarcoma in 2 cases, and sarcoma of the fibroblastic type in 1 case.

[Ultrastructural characteristics of the cells of human medullary thyroid cancer].

Eight medullary carcinomas of the human thyroid gland were examined electron microscopically for identification of cell types forming these tumors. The diagnosis was based on classical histological criteria including a positive reaction for amyloid and impregnation according to the method of De Grandi specific for C-cells. The human medullary carcinoma of the thyroid gland was found to contain dark, light, and intermediate tumor cells. The ultrastructural features of these types of cells suggest that they may be regarded as being at different stages of the intensity of synthesis processes more in the light cells. Amyloid production in this type of cancer is associated with tumor cells.

[Comparative quantitative electron-microscopic study of the nucleoli of human thyroid oncocytes and follicular cells].

The qualitative and quantitative ultrastructural examinations of nucleoli of follicular cells and oncocytes of human thyroid revealed no morphological differences between these two types of cells and confirmed the presence of all structures necessary for normal functioning. Oncocyte nuclei are not carriers of morphological alterations which could have indicated severe functional disorders in these cells, and morphological and morphometric examinations indicated functional intactness of nuclei and nucleoli.

Adenoma↗

[Electron microscopic diagnosis of oncocytoma and renal cell carcinoma].

Electron microscopic examination of two tumors of the kidneys with similar histological structure (large eosinophilic cells with granular cytoplasm) showed that such tumors may be of different histogenesis (cytogenesis), their morphological picture in the light microscope being similar.

Adenocarcinoma↗

[Ovarian struma].

The paper presents a histological and electron microscopic description of the ovarian struma having the structure of thyroid tissue and consisting predominantly of A cells with the ultrastructural features typical of this cell species.

[Endocrine cellular participation in the formation of lung tumors].

In lung cancers of various histological structure, it is possible to encounter endocrine tumor cells which contain neurosecretory granules in the cytoplasm. Their presence in lung tumors may explain the cause of hormonal activity of some neoplasms of this organ, which is evidently not related to the concept of the so-called ectopic production of hormones by tumor cells. It is reasonable to believe that endocrinous and epithelial cells of the lung tissue have a common source of their development.

The functional significance of oncocytes (the "B" cells).

Oncocytes independently of their localization in this or that organ contain serotonin and high activity of succinate dehydrogenase. Hence oncocytes are not afunctionally dying cells, as was before believed, but a group of serotoninocytes, represented as a widely spread in the body diffused peripheral system of neuroendocrine system, which activity is bound with the function of the given biogenic monoamine. It seems reasonable to call oncocytes "B" cells after the first letter of the phrase "biogenic monoamines" which fully corresponds to their functional significance.

Epithelial Cells↗

[Oncocytes--a system of serotoninocytes].

Oncocytes, irrespectes, irrespective of their localization in this or that organ, possess only one active function inherent in all cells of the given type; this function depends on serotonin cantained therein. Consequently, oncocytes are not afunctional perishing cells, as was thought up to this time, but represent a group of serotoninocytes appearing in the form of a widely spread in the organism of the diffuse peripheral neuro-endocrine system, the activity of which is associated with the function of the givern biogenic monoamine.
