A technique is described for the preparation of combined morphological analyses of the arteries in the neck region: In situ fixation after opening of thorax and head and perfusion with electrolyte solution. Expansion of the vessel wall during the fixation by means of an especially elaborated experimental procedure. Presentation of a basic preparation for optimization and standardization of endothelial lesions, discussions to integrate the procedure into a medicolegal autopsy.
In animal experiments with minipigs the SARNS sternum saw and an ultrasonic saw were compared. Groups of five animals were sacrificed after three months and the sterna were examined radiologically and pathoanatomically. A positive hemostyptic effect of the ultrasonic saw, as described in the literature, could be confirmed. Contrary to data in the literature disturbances of bone healing and the extent of tissue lesions in the form of necrosis were considerably more common in the sterna separated with the ultrasonic saw than in the control group.

65 cases of transverse lesions of the cord for which autopsies were performed in the Pathological Institute of the University Clinic "Bergmannsheil Bochum" are described. 44 of these 65 cases were occupational accidents. The most frequent locations were the lower thoracic and lumbar parts of the spine (n = 43). The most frequent causes of death in acute transverse lesions of the cord were lung complications; in chronic transverse lesions of the cord, however, complications of the kidneys and the gastrointestinal tract were responsible. For acute and chronic transverse lesions of the cord the survival time was dependent on the age at the onset of the accident and on the level and degree of the paralysis (complete or incomplete).

352 hepatocirrhosis cases were among the 7139 autopsy cases of the years 1964--1973. It could be ascertained statistically: Together with the increasing scarred liver transformation the number of oesophageal piles and ascites increased. The greater the scarred transformation and cirrhosis activity the higher was the number of hepatocirrhoses known at lifetime. An increase of spleen weight due to scarred liver transformation could not be proved. The expected correlation between degree of fibrosis and liver weight could not be confirmed. According to expectation, hepatocirrhosis cases known at lifetime caused death more frequently than cases with unknown hepatocirrhosis. We want to point out, however, that 13 cases of death may be directly attributed to clinically unknown hepatocirrhosis. The medically unknown hepatocirrhosis cases in one group were frequently still "young" hepatocirrhosis cases without ascites and oesophageal piles, or the clinical features of advanced hepatocirrhosis were masked by other severe diseases (e.g., anthracosilicosis of the lung).

In extension of earlier Scanning Electron Microscopical findings on local vital reaction, we initially tried conventional microscopic histology. By standard staining methods--generally used in demonstrating fibrins (Ladew IG, PTAH, PAS etc.) fresh fibrinous mashing was hardly demonstrable. Tryptophan reaction as per Adams brought positive results. By modifying Scanning Electron Microscopic preparation techniques, the surface transverse striation could be shown. For dissolution of the complex morphological structural patterns on the wound surface, Transmission Electron Microscopy was used. Identification of fibrinous filaments was done by their interior transverse striation. Mashing of shaped structure components of the blood in vital and post mortal injuries should be more closely analyzed. Advantages and disadvantages of Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopic techniques are discussed in view of forensic problems and a tentative judgement passed.
Among 4608 evaluated post mortem records (3452 miners with silicosis and 1156 miners without silicosis or nonminers resp.) 501 cases had developed a bronchial carcinoma. 425 of these observed cases showed a bronchial carcinoma together with silicosis, 76 cases were without anthracosilicosis. The occurrence of the bronchial carcinoma in case of anthracosilicosis did not depend on the time of employment in the underground mining industry. Neither was there a correlation between the determined grade of anthracosilicosis and the frequency of bronchial carcinoma. The diagnosis for 2,8% of these combined cases of anthracosilicosis and bronchial carcinoma was silicotic carcinoma of scar tissue. Statistically no signficant differences could be detected between the two groups of bronchial carcinomata with and without silicosis regarding age structure, kind of propagation and histological type of the bronchial carcinoma.
