The ribosomal database project (RDP-II): introducing myRDP space and quality controlled public data.

Substantial new features have been implemented at the Ribosomal Database Project in response to the increased importance of high-throughput rRNA sequence analysis in microbial ecology and related disciplines. The most important changes include quality analysis, including chimera detection, for all available rRNA sequences and the introduction of myRDP Space, a new web component designed to help researchers place their own data in context with the RDP's data. In addition, new video tutorials describe how to use RDP features. Details about RDP data and analytical functions can be found at the RDP-II website (http://rdp.cme.msu.edu/).

Experimental studies on the effect of lidocaine on wound healing.

Local anesthetics have several effects on wound healing. In experimental studies, procaine at high concentrations has been proved to retard healing in surgical wounds by diminishing the synthesis of mucopolysaccharides and hence probably collagen. Other studies have shown that lidocaine and bupivacaine inhibit collagen synthesis in fibroblast tissue cultures in rats. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of lidocaine on wound healing. An experimental, prospective, comparative, crossover and double-blind study was designed. Forty male guinea pigs, weighing 300 to 600 g, were randomly assigned to two groups. In control group A (20 animals), skin and subcutaneous tissue in a clean wound were incised and infiltrated with regular saline solution; in group B 20 animals were infiltrated with 1% lidocaine. All animals were sacrificed on day 8 and evaluated for breaking strength, number of collagen fibers by morphometry, and histologic examination of collagenization, edema, vascularity, and presence of acute and chronic inflammatory cells. The histopathologic appearance of tissues infiltrated with lidocaine did not vary consistently in relation to collagenization, edema, or acute and chronic inflammatory processes. The mean breaking strength between both groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.120). Important statistical differences were observed in vascularity (p < 0.003) and morphometric results (p < 0.001), where collagen was found in small amounts in the lidocaine group. The results of this study suggest that local infiltration of lidocaine produces significant histopathologic changes, but it does not substantially alter wound healing as there were no differences in the breaking strength of the wounds.

A personal computer-based system for parallel line analysis of bioassay data.

A program is described for symmetric parallel line analysis of bioassay data with a logistic dose-response relationship. Dose-response relationship is transformed to semilog or log-log. A regression line can be calculated for the dose-response curve for standard and test samples, and produces potency estimate of test sample preparation relative to the standard preparation based on parallel-line bioassay statistical methods [3,4], together with detailed analysis of variance, estimates of slope, intercept and chi 2 test which permits a very sensitive test for linearity and parallelism of standard and test sample and facilitates detection of 'outliers', i.e. samples exhibiting non-parallelism. The general comparison of dose-response relationships produced by the program are a feature of particular interest.

Mass vaccination campaign against rabies: are dogs correctly protected? The Peruvian experience.

In a mass vaccination campaign conducted in Peru in March 1985, 270,000 dogs (65% of the estimated dog population) were vaccinated over the course of 1 month with an inactivated tissue culture vaccine. Since that time no human rabies cases have been reported; in addition, the number of animal rabies cases has declined to only three from a previous mean of 292 cases per year since 1980. A serologic survey was also done to determine the immune response among randomly selected vaccinated dogs, with titers determined 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after vaccination. Twelve months after vaccination, 97% of the dogs had a rabies neutralizing antibody titer of greater than or equal to 0.5 IU/mL, and 87% had a titer of greater than or equal to 1.0 IU/mL. Thus, this tissue culture rabies vaccine given under field conditions induced antibodies that lasted for at least 1 year in 97% of vaccinated dogs.

[Transfer of the pronator teres tendon to the extensor carp radialis tendon in wrist flexion deformity in cerebral palsy].

The flexion deformity of the wrist in cerebral palsy is quite common, carrying disability to the effective use of the hands. From 1980 to 1990, 36 transferences of the pronator teres to the extensor carpi radialis were reviewed. The authors describe the operative technique by a unique incision, that may be used in cerebral palsy, and conclude that it is a good method for correction of deformity.
