Acholeplasmas were detected in five of 96 feces samples from clinically normal horses. Three of the five strains isolated were identified as A. equifetale, one as A. hippikon, and one was serologically identical with the Acholeplasma strain 881.
Successful empirical treatment of 17 out of 24 stallions, which had failed to ejaculate after normal penile erection, intromission and friction, by chemical blockage of beta-receptors and additional stimulation of alpha-receptors led us to investigate stallions with normal ejaculatory patterns. In an initial experiment one adult half-bred stallion was injected with 4.88 mg noradrenaline hydrochloride (treatment A), 10 mg bunitrolol (treatment B = beta-receptor blockage) and a combination of treatment A and B. Investigations of the same stallion on dated occasions without treatment served as controls. The test criteria were heart rate during copulation by telemetric measurement, volume of ejaculates and sperm concentration per ml and per ejaculate. In a second experiment, 2 stallions were treated after a modified test schedule. In addition to the criteria used in the first experiment seminal citric acid, ergothioneine, and glycerophosphocholine were measured. Administration of the beta-blocker alone or in combination with alpha-receptor stimulation resulted in (a) significant lowering of the maximal heart rate, (b) significant increase of sperm count per ejaculate and (c) significant rise of glycerophosphocholine.

On the basis of cytological similarities in chronic obstructive disease (COPD) in human beings and in horses during 1981 a total number of 144 horses with COPD were examined. Bronchial secretions were taken under endoscopic control and stained with a modified Hansel staining procedure. Whereas 26 horses did not exhibit signs of allergic reactions cytologically and 94 horses showed low amounts of eosinocytes and/or mast cells in their secretion; only the secretions of 24 horses (16,67%) were characterized by fairly high contents of these allergy associated cells and low numbers of neutrophilic granulocytes.

Successful unilateral extirpation of an inflamed seminal vesicle in a stallion led to systematic trials of the influence of a reduction and absence of the secretion of this gland upon semen characteristics. Operations were performed by the method described for the bull. The volume of ejaculates dropped and sperm concentration per ml increased in each of 2 stallions from which the seminal vesicles had been uni- or bi-laterally removed. Total sperm number and motility remained uninfluenced, but the percentage of eosin-stained spermatozoa increased in the unilaterally operated stallion and the percentage of abnormal spermatozoa increased significantly in both. Concentration of citric acid per ml and per ejaculate was significantly reduced after bilateral vesiculectomy. Ergothioneine concentration per ml increased in the unilaterally and in the bilaterally operated stallion.
