[Cooperative research into the treatment of breast cancer].

The results of surgical treatment of early breast cancers are discussed. Radical mastectomy for stage I tumor and a modified mastectomy after Patey-for stage II were shown to be feasible. A cooperative randomized study on therapy of localized stage IIb and IIIb breast tumors made the case for application of polychemotherapy as a component of combined and complex therapy.

[Evaluation of the role of radical mastectomy, postoperative radiation and chemotherapy in stage IIb (TI-2NIMO) breast cancer].

The paper deals with the first results of a joint study carried out at a number of oncological institutions of the RSFSR. It was concerned with evaluation of the role of Holstead's radical operation, postoperative radiation and chemotherapy in patients with stage IIb (TI, 2NIMO) breast cancer. 822 history cases were analysed. Recurrences and metastases were detected in 12.6% of surgical patients (regional--3.2%, distant metastases--in 9.4%). A slightly lower frequency of recurrences and metastases (11.4%) was recorded in group II (Holstead's operation and postoperative radiation treatment). The lowest frequency was in group III: recurrences were 2.1 times less frequent than in study group 1 and 1.9 times less frequent than in group II. As for metastasis incidence, the figures were 2.2 and 2.1, respectively. The data obtained serve as a basement for further development of joint studies on the use of combined therapy of stage IIb breast cancer including chemotherapy.

[Differential diagnosis of esophageal cancer by using mathematical decision rules].

It is suggested to use the medico-mathematical "decisive rules" for the differential diagnosis of esophageal cancer in non-specialized medical institutions. As the first step the examination cards were written, based on the data of 1195 patients with verified diagnosis. The "decisive rules" were worked out basing on the examination cards of 597 patients (in 267--esophageal cancer and in 330--benign lesions: cardiospasm, benign tumors, cysts, burn and scarring strictures, esophagitis, diverticulum). The suggested "decisive rules" using 63 and 87 clinical signs were tested elsewhere for a retrospective diagnosis in 167 patients. Using the "decisive rules" with 63 clinical signs esophageal cancer was recognized in 96% of cases, non-cancer--in 92%, while using 87 signs--in 92 and 94% accordingly. The rule comprising 63 signs-questions is recommended for practical purposes.
