[Morphochemical changes in the brain in experimental hypothyroidism].

Under conditions of experimentally induced thyroid insufficiency a number of structural changes were revealed in the brain tissues and the pia mater. Of a particular importance among them were changes in the vessels of the microcirculation system that manifested themselves in the form of disturbed metabolism of acidic mucopolysaccharides with their accumulation and polymerization in the course of hypothyroidism, as well as accumulation of biogenic monoamines (noradrenaline and serotonin) in the endothelium of the precapillary arterioles and capillaries. The changes discovered may be taken as a basis for the explanation of some neurological and especially vascular manifestations on the part of the nervous system in patients with hypothyroidism.

[Pathomorphological changes in the kidneys in experimental hypothyroidism].

Morphohistochemical changes were studied in the kidneys of rats in experimental hypothyroidism. The latter was induced by subtotal thyroidectomy (observation periods--60 days), feeding of 6-methylthiouracil (observation periods--100 days), feeding of 6-methylthiouracil to thyroidectomized animals (observation periods--7 to 60 days). Animals of all the three groups displayed morphohistochemical signs of disturbance of acid and neutral polysaccharide metabolism in the vaso-stromal structures of the kidneys and also in the glomeruli. The degree of these changes depended directly on the extent and the duration of a hypothyroid condition. The changes described led to development of sclerosis. Among these changes attention was attracted to deposition of calcium salts in the epithelium, chiefly of the distal tubules.

[Cytophotometric evaluation of the total protein content in the cell nucleus and cytoplasm of the hepatocytes in experimental hypothyroidism].

In rats with hypothyroid condition induced by bilateral subtotal thyroidectomy or mercazolyl feeding a comparative cytophotometric study of the protein content in the nuclei and the cytoplasm of hepatocytes and their area was carried out. The animals of both experimental groups displayed a marked reduction of the protein-synthesis function and also atrophy of the mentioned hepatocyte structures. However, in animals given mercazolyl these changes occurred earlier and were more pronounced, this indicating the combined effect of thyroid insufficiency and mercazolyl. Irrespective of the method of induction of the hypothyroid state (surgical or by drugs) disturbance of protein synthesis in the hepatocyte nuclei took place much earlier and was more intensive than in the cytoplasm.

[Immunodepressive effect of mercazolyl].

Blood serum immunoglobulins and the process of peripheral blood blast-transformation of lymphocytes were studied in rats given mercazolyl in a dose of 0.9 mg/100 g of body weight orally for 80 days. This drug proved to produce an immunodepressive effect, which was more evidenced by the electrophoresis indices, and less (chiefly at the late periods of the experiment)--by the peripheral blood lymphocyte blasttransformation indices. The immunodepressive influence of mercazolyl on the animal organism should be taken into consideration in using this preparation in the capacity of a thyrostatic.
