The accuracy of cytology and the cytological possibilities in the detection of the carcinoma of the corpus of the uterus are discussed on the basis of a ten year's experience of the gynaecological material of the 1st University Hospital for ob. gyn., Vienna, Austria. In particular, the various clinical and laboratory sources of mistakes are pointed out. The various possibilities of taking the smear are under discussion in order to improve the cytological diagnosis of the carcinoma of the corpus of the uterus. All these procedures, however, do not relieve the gynaecologist of the necessity to perform a fractioned d. and c. in all cases of irregular bleeding.

Induction of labor with intravaginal application of PGE2-tablets has become more popular recently. Delivery intervals have been reported to be reduced. Therefore we investigated intrauterine pressure profiles in a group of 25 women in which labor was induced electively by means of vaginal applications of 3 mg PGE2-tablets and compared them to a control group of 27 women with spontaneous onset of labor. In the first hours after amniotomy the frequency of contractions was higher in nulliparous whereas baseline and amplitude were increased in multiparous women. Overall uterine activity (hourly contraction area) however, was not statistical different in both groups. We concluded that shortened delivery intervals in the PGE2 induction group is based on an increased uterine activity in the first stage of labor. At the usual dosage no pathological pressure increases could be observed which lead to fetal compromise.
Plasma volume was measured with 131I-marked human albumin in 32 cases of gestosis at 35 to 38 weeks gestation. The same tests were made in 4 nonpregnant women. We examined 24 patients suffering from medium to severe gestosis (above 4 points according to Goecke) and 8 patients suffering from minimal gestosis (under 4 points). 4 nonpregnant women exhibited a mean plasma volume of 41.3 ml kg body weight, whereas patients suffering from minimal gestosis exhibited a mean plasma volume of 51.5 ml/kg body weight, in those suffering from medium to severe gestosis we found a volume of 48 ml/kg body weight. There was no significant correlation between the severity of the gestosis and plasma volume reduction, in contrast to birth weight of the infant with regard to gestation period and plasma volume. A low plasma volume in the mother was closely correlated to fetal dystrophy. The sensitivity of the method was 88.8%, specificity 80%.
