Lens-induced uveitis: further immunological studies in an experimental model.

Inbred rats have been studied to determine under what circumstances sensitization will or will not induce uveitis. After 50 days of biomicroscopic follow-up and histologic evaluation of 119 eyes the following was found in black hooded CAP-rats (RtH-1c) presensitized to eye, liver or kidney (guinea pig): 1. Alterations only following additional damage to their own tissue by lens discission plus iridotomy 2. As the case of lens-induced uveitis in humans, alterations after the disappearance of traumatization reaction in the form of protein-rich exudate clinically and an accumulation of round cells in the anterior uvea, surrounding the lens and retinal vessels histologically 3. Dependence of these alterations on sensitization by xenogenic tissue 4. Dependence of the alterations on the animal strain, i.e. absence in albino LEW (RtH-1(1)).

Comparison of cell-mediated immune reactions in sympathetic and phacogenic ophthalmia with reactions in uveitis of other origin.

Cell-mediated immunity was studied in three cases of genuine sympathetic ophthalmia, i.e. in cases without lens involvement. In control experiments, lymphocyte transformation tests (uptake of 3H-thymidine) and leukocyte migration inhibition tests (Soborg-Bendixen) gave similar results for six normal persons, six patients with uveitis and two cases of phacogenic ophthalmia. In contrast, two cases of genuine sympathetic ophthamlia, namely those with recent enucleation, showed a significantly increased lymphocyte stimulation index when tested with homologous retina, not with choroid.

[Sexchromatin determination in a corneal graft in adult cystinosis (author's transl)].

On the basis of the distribution of F-bodies (Y-Chromatin) and Barr-bodies (X-Chromatin) in a lamellar keratoplasty from a female donor and in the surrounding male corneal tissue of a 55-year-old male patient with adult cystinosis a few female corneal epithelial cells could be identified 7 years after corneal tissue-graft had been performed. It was concluded that after keratoplasty epithelial cells grow into each other, i.e. from the graft to the host tissue and vice versa. The fact that even after 7 years female epithelial cells from the donor can still be detected is put down to the metabolic condition resulting in cystinosis.

[Orbita teratoma in a new-born (author's transl)].

An orbital tumor of the size of an apple with a centrally placed optic vesicle was removed in a new-born baby girl 3 days after delivery. The histological examination revealed a mature teratoma with derivatives of all blastodermic layers. There has been no relapse up till now and the further growth of the girl has not been impaired.

[Recent details of the frequency and immunologic reactivity of sympathetic ophthalmia (author's transl)].

When giving details of the frequency of Sympathetic Ophthalmia a clear distinction must be made between this disorder and the Phacogenic Ophthalmia also affecting the second eye. The latter is found with lens damage, whereas genuine Sympathetic Ophthalmia in relation to enucleation, eye damage and eye opening surgery at Heidelberg University between 1937 and 1973 is less than 1%, a figure markedly below figures quoted in the earlier literature. In two out of three patients with recent genuine Sympathetic Ophthalmia we found an augmented stimulation index in the LTT with retina antigen, not choroid antigen, as compared to control groups. This can be regarded as due to an individually augmented immunologic reactivity towards eye specific tissue antigens.
