[Investigation into the effect of fluphenazine hydrochloride (lyorodin) in children with behaviour disorders by means of psychophysiological parameters].

In a group of 44 children with behaviour disorders, the mode of action of the phenothiazine preparation fluphenazine hydrochloride (Lyorodin) was tested by means of psychophysiological methods of measurement (critical flicker-fuse frequency and measurement of the response time). In some of the comparative examinations before and after administration of the drug significant differences were found. A defined psychic stress resulted in changed measured values in both methods. Children with cerebral injuries showed a lower degree of reaction after the administration of the preparation than children not encephalopathically affected.

On the influence of pentoxifylline on the permeability of rat erythrocytes for methyl-O-glucose.

In a series of experiments it was established that in the presence of pentoxifylline (Trental), methyl-O-glucose permeates rat erythrocyte membrane significantly more than in untreated control experiments. Pentoxifylline itself, apparently does not permeate erythrocyte membrane. It is possible that some of the therapeutic effects of pentoxifylline can be related to the facilitation of red blood cell membrane permeability for glucose.

[Problems in prenatal diagnosis of neural tube defects (author's transl)].

The determination of AFP in amniotic fluid for the prediction of neural tube defects fails in cases of myelomeningoceles which changes their status from the open to the closed form. AFP values laying in a borderline range require a fundamental clarification by ultrasound examination for the detection of spinal malformation.

[The coincidence of visceral lupus erythematosus and epilepsy].

It is reported on course and problems of the diagnosis of a lupus erythematodes visceralis with epilepsy. In the demonstrated case the initial stage was characterized by the nearly simultaneous appearance of relapsing arthritides and epilepsy. The diagnosis was made in the stage of an acute exacerbation with cardiac symptomatology which began after the medicamentous treatment with diphenylhydantoin. Up to this moment an oligosymptomatic lupus erythematodes visceralis had not yet been diagnosed. Anamnestic data and the laboratory-clinical findings of the further course of the disease proved the actual lupus erythematodes visceralis. It is referred to the necessity of an aimed anamnesis and a determination of the antinuclear factors before every application ofhydantoin derivations when an epilepsy and joint symptomatology are present.

Factors influencing lactation performance in rural Gambian mothers.

Breast-milk consumption has been measured in a rural African community in which breast-feeding on demand is universally practised until the baby is 18 mos old. The mother's long-term capacity for breast-milk production is determined by the end of the second month of lactation, yield being closely correlated with the infant's birth-weight. Other factors significantly influencing output were parity, month of lactation, baby's weight-for-age, season, and maternal diet. Daily milk consumption was limited primarily by the amount delivered per feed, not the frequency of feeding.

Assignment of genes for immunoglobulin kappa and heavy chains to chromosomes 6 and 12 in mouse.

Using somatic cell hybrids from fusions of lymphocytes of two different mouse stocks with the myeloma cell line X63-Ag8, we have assigned genes for the immunoglobulin heavy and kappa-type light chains to chromosomes 12 and 6, respectively. The two mouse stocks exhibit karyotypes consisting of nine pairs of metacentric chromosomes as a result of centric fusions of acrocentric chromosomes in different combinations. In the hybrid cells these metacentric chromosomes can be distinguished from the acrocentric chromosomes of myeloma origin, permitting correlation of Ig chain expression with mitotic loss of individual metacentric chromosomes.

Body temperature and oxygen uptake in the kinkajou (Potos flavus, Schreber), a nocturnal tropical carnivore.

Two kinkajous (Potos flavus, Procyonidae) showed marked nycthemeral variations in their rectal temperature. The mean Tr at night was 38.1 +/- 0.4 degrees C SD and 36.0 +/- 0.6 degrees C SD while resting during the day. Body temperature and O2-consumption were measured at ambient temperatures from 5-35 degrees C. With one exception at 35 degrees C, hypo- or hyperthermia was never observed. At air temperatures above 30 degrees C the bears reacted with behavioural responses. O2-consumption was minimal at Ta's from 23-30 degrees C. The mean basal metabolic rate was 0.316 ml O2 g-1 h-1 which is only 65% of the expected value according to the Kleiber formula. Below 23 degrees C heat production followed the equation : y (ml O2 g-1 h-1) = 0.727--0.018 Ta. The minimal thermal conductance was 90% of the predicted value according to the formula : C (ml O2 g-1 h-1 degrees C-1) = 1.02 W-0.505 (HERREID & KESSEL, 1967). Kinkajous are another distinct exception to the mouse to elephant curve.

[Episodic psychoses in epileptic juveniles with reference to electroencephalographic findings].

The present paper describes three juveniles affected with epilepsy, who suffered from episodic psychoses. Such disorders are a very rare occurrence in young persons. The patients had grand mal epilepsy with "secondary temporalization". Clinical and electroencepholographic aspects are discussed by reference to these particular cases. Also, the authors deal with questions of classification and etiopathogenesis. Finally, possible causes producing such psychoses and giving rise to the psychopathological character thereof are pointed out within the framework of a multiconditional approach.

[Methods for simultaneous recording of pharmacodynamic and toxic effects on interior sensitive receptors, respiration and cardiac-circulatory system of guinea pigs (author's transl)].

A method for simultaneous, continuous registration of pharmacodynamic and toxic effects, resp., on pulmonary-stretch receptors, on respiration and on hemodynamics in guinea pigs is described. The following parameters are recorded synchronously by a multi-track recorder: 1. The afferences in the cervical n. vagus; its electrical integration is employed for measuring the total intensity and the ex- and the inhalation intensity, resp., of the afferences; 2. the pneumatogram for measuring the maximum velocity of air flow, duration of the breath phase and parts thereof (in-, and exhalation and postexpiratory pause), and the respiration rate; 3. the diastolic and systolic blood pressure during in- and exhalation and postexpiratory pause; 4. the electrocardiogram (ECG). The normal distribution of the initial values is examined and discussed. Further the initial values measured in three series of experiments are discussed and compared: mono-vagotomy/spontaneous respiration, bivagotomy/spontaneous respiration and artificial respiration/monovagotomy. The results are compared with some experimental and clinical findings from literature.

[Reference values of respiratory parameters in adults 4th paper: reference values for screening parameters of lung mechanics (author's transl)].

Reference values for screening parameters, evaluating the shape of flow-volume-curves on forced expiration, were calculated from measurements in 1127 healthy subjects aged between 13 and 72 years. The following parameters were determined by means of the electronic spirometer pneumo-test: 1. the peak flow value Vmax, 2. the whole time constant tauges of the flow volume diagram and its components tau1 and tau2 from the upper and the lower part of the flow volume curve, 3. the most frequent time constant taumax in the distribution function of time constants. In relation to age Vmax-values show a maximum at 35 years and a significant decrease in younger and older subjects. Values in women are significant smaller than in men throughout the range of age. The time constants tauges and tau1 decrease significantly with increase in age. Differences between females and males are not statistically significant for these parameters. The time constants tau2 and taumax are age-independent. Their mean values are identical in all age decades and in women significantly smaller than in man.

[Neuropsychiatric and electroencephalographic studies of the course of patients accidentally struck by lightning].

Five patient (one adult and four children) hit by lightning strokes were examined clinically and electroencephalographically. One child died immediately after the accident. For the four survivors, data are available which were collected during several years' examinations. It was possible to confirm the results of previous investigations which showed that pathologic EEG changes can be associated with a weak neuropsychiatric symptomatology following the gradual disappearance of the acute lightning-stroke syndrome and can be observed even in the case of freedom from complaints and symptoms. Finally, the authors also deal with the problems associated with the making of statements by medical experts.
