[Assessment of superficial roughness of 3 composite resins treated with different polishing techniques].

In this study, the superficial roughness of two composite resins classified as condensable and of a traditional hybrid composite resin was analyzed after different polishing techniques. Test specimens were confected, immersed in distilled water for 24 hours and submitted to two different techniques of superficial treatment, in which disc systems (Sof-Lex and Super Snap) and silicon tips (Enhance) were utilized. The results revealed the greater superficial roughness of Alert, when compared with Solitaire and Degufill Mineral--no statistically significant differences were observed between the last two materials. The superficial roughness of the specimens polished with Enhance tips was greater than that of the specimens polished with discs and there were no statistically significant differences between both disc systems.

[In vitro study of marginal microleakage in dental caries treated with Er:YAG laser and restored with esthetic materials].

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate marginal microleakage in class V preparations submitted to treatment with Er:YAG laser and restored with aesthetic materials. Sixty human molars were selected and class V cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual aspects of their cervical thirds. The restorative technique followed the instructions of the manufacturers. The samples were divided in 3 groups of 20 teeth each: Group 1--control; Group 2--Er:YAG laser was applied on the enamel margin before the restoration was placed; Group 3--a thin layer of calcium hydroxide was applied on the axial wall before the restoration was placed. Each group was divided in 4 sub-groups and the teeth were restored with different aesthetic materials. All samples were submitted to thermocycling and stained with 50% silver nitrate. Based on the obtained results, we could conclude that there are statistically significant differences between the 12 experimental conditions tested. The samples which presented the greatest microleakage were those treated with Er:YAG laser and restored with light-cured glass ionomer cement, followed by those that received Er:YAG laser and the sandwich technique, the cavities restored with light-cured glass ionomer cement and those restored by means of the sandwich technique, in this order.

Reattachment of fractured teeth: a review of literature regarding techniques and materials.

Anterior crown fractures are a common form of injury that mainly affects children and adolescents. The position of maxillary incisors and their eruptive pattern carries a significant risk for trauma. In the pre-adhesive era, fractured teeth needed to be restored either with pin-retained inlays or cast restorations that sacrificed healthy tooth structure and were a challenge for clinicians to match with adjacent teeth. The development of adhesive dentistry has allowed dentists to use the patient's own fragment to restore the fractured tooth. Since then, several successful case reports that use a variety of techniques and materials to reattach fractured teeth have been published. This article presents a comprehensive literature review on techniques and materials used to restore uncomplicated dental trauma.

[Anatomical variations in the hypoglossal canal].

In this paper, 492 human dried skulls grouped according to sex and race (White and no White) were examined and the presence of a double hypoglossal canal was observed in 97 skulls. The statistical analysis allowed us to conclude that no significative difference exists in race X canal type; sex X canal type; race X side and sex X side interations.

[Stress in teeth restored with gold and copper-aluminum alloys under distributed force. Finite element method].

The author studied the stress distribution which occurs in casted metalic restoration a gold alloy type II and a copper-aluminum, with cavity preparation of both types: intracoronal or extracoronal cavity using the finite elements method in a first right inferior molar. The conclusion was that the mechanical performance of both are very similar. Stress occurred in a dental structure which alloy cast restoration are smaller than that occurred in a tooth without cavity preparation. The cavity preparation with intracoronal shows a better stress distribution in the dentine than that with extracoronal. In the region near the buccopulpal line angle occurs a stress concentration in despite of the type of the cavity metallic alloy used.

[Anatomy of extraoral block anesthesia of the maxillary nerve (precoronoid approach)].

The authors measured with sliding-calliper of 0.01 mm of accuracy bi-zigio distance and the distance between the foramen rotundum and vertex of the angle formed by the anterior border of the coronoid process with the lower border of the zygomatic bone. The sample was 160 brazilian adults skulls (50% male and 50% female). Using the Pearson's correlation they found the following results: 1) The positive correlation was reasonably strong in male at the right side between the maximal width of the face and the ideal depth, to reach with an injection needle, the maxillary nerve in the pterigopalatine fossa. 2) The correlation was moderately positive in male sex at the left side and in female at both sides. The formula of the line of regression found was: [table: see text]

[Study of caries using axial-mesial-distal sections and interproximal and periapical radiographs with paralleling and bisecting technics].

The authors, considering the radiographic complementary survey importance in Operative Dentistry, has made an analysis on the three main radiologic technics (Bite-Wing and Bisecting Angle and Paralleling Technic), in an attempt to compare the per cent magnification grade of the carious lesion radiographic image, by measurements taken at the tooth sections, and over the patient's radiographs, to contribute with a more accurate diagnosis performed by the dentist.

[Dimensional changes in die stones with an additive and sodium chloride].

The obtention of a working model and the preparation of the die must be developed with great care and attention to detail. Based on these principles, a study was conducted referring to the different kinds of special plasters or die plasters available on the market, with respect to dimensional alterations, as well as an investigation of the dimensional behavior of special plasters in the presence of two additives. The results shows that Vel-mix had the greatest difference. All the special plasters brands showed alterations when the Gypsum Hardener were used. These alterations did not occur with sodium chloride.
