Anatomic and hemodynamic changes in the inferior vena cava associated with prevention of pulmonary thromboembolism.

This paper analyzes the results of a multimodality instrumental study of the structural and functional properties of the inferior vena cava (IVC) in 173 patients with acute venous thrombosis, who underwent different interventions aimed at pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) prevention. Of these, 63% of patients were examined in the long-term period, within the time 2 to 36 months. 26% of patients were found to have variants of the anatomic structure of the IVC system, such as the doubling of the renal veins, ring-shaped structure or entry to the IVC at a distance exceeding 5 cm from each other. The paper also provides a detailed analysis of the hemodynamic parameters (maximal and minimal linear flow velocities in the IVC, time-averaged maximal linear flow velocities and their different indices) and of their changes as dependent on the type of interventions on the IVC. It has been established on the basis of the data obtained that endovascular catheter thrombectomy is the method for PTE prevention because it restores the IVC lumen and refines the regional hemodynamics. Cava filter implantation induces a rounded deformation and expansion of the infrarenal IVC up to 40.9% of the area of its cross section but exerts a minimal adverse effect on the flow. IVC plication leads to a slit-like deformation and a 12.9% stenosis of its lumen as well as to deceleration of the flow acquiring a turbulent character.

[Clinical and immunological aspects of surgical treatment of stomach and duodenal ulcer].

Of 182 examined patients with the stomach and duodenum ulcer disease (UD) 104 (57.14%) of whom with complications. Antiulcerous antibodies were determined in patients according to results obtained in passive hemagglutination reaction (PHAR) using erythrocytic diagnosticums. In patients with gastric and duodenal UD the antitissue antibodies to corresponding antigens from gastric and duodenal ulcers were determined before the operation. The incidence of antibodies discovery depends on the patients condition. In 18 months after the operation the percentage of PHAR positive results have reduced down to 72.5% on average.

[Specific immunologic diagnosis of alcoholic myocardial dystrophy].

The paper deals with the results of specific anticardiac antibody determination in 124 patients with alcoholic damage to the myocardium (Stages I-III chronic alcoholism), 36 healthy subjects, and 33 patients with various cardiovascular diseases. It was established that specific antibodies were present in the sera from patients with alcoholic myocardial dystrophy, but absent in healthy subjects and almost completely absent in patients with cardiac diseases of other etiology. This enables the authors to recommend that specific anticardiac antibodies be identified to detect alcoholic myocardial damage. The procedure proposed provides a high diagnostic accuracy (89.2%), has no contraindications, requires no special preparation of the patient for the examination, therefore may be used both in the in- and outpatient settings.

[Effect of pertussis antibodies on the induction of suppressor cells of humoral immunity in mice].

Standard pertussis agglutinative serum as well as antibodies to total and purified protective pertussis antigens, isolated from the serum by immunoadsorption technique, were studied. The treatment of donors with pertussis antibodies affected the T-suppressor formation, induced by high doses of sheep red blood cells, as was shown on the model of syngeneic transfer. Immunomodulating effect of antibodies, complementary to immunogen fraction of pertussis cells, was decreased. It was suggested that the observed antilymphocyte activity of antipertussis antibodies could play a certain role in postvaccination complications after corpuscular pertussis vaccine administration.

[Increased sensitivity of the parapertussis diagnostic agent].

The adsorption activity of formolated sheep red blood cells can be increased by their combined treatment with low-frequency ultrasound, tannin and Tween-40. The diagnosticums thus obtained have proved to be highly sensitive and specific and can be recommended for the detection of antibodies to Bordetella parapertussis in the sera of sick children.

[Problem of evaluation of the results of psychopathologic examinations].

The article is concerned with the qualification of the data of a pathopsychological examination in cases rendering the differential diagnosis between schizophrenia and psychopathy difficult. The authors suggest a new method of analyzing the findings on the basis of their comparision by a number of lines, which allows the identification of additional differential diagnostic criteria. The data obtained indicate that pathological changes may be expressed not only in the form of impairment of individual functions but also in an alteration of their correlations.

[Evaluation of the indices of humoral and cellular immunity induced in mice of various genotypes by pertussis antigens].

The genetic predetermination of the level of immune reactions to the injection of corpuscular pertussis vaccine and purified soluble pertussis vaccine has been revealed. Genetic differences in the intensity of immune response are manifest in both humoral and cell-mediated immunity. C57BL/6 mice belong to strains with high responsiveness, while NIHHSFS/H and CBWA mice belong to strains with low responsiveness to Bordetella pertussis.

[Clinical importance of determining DNA antibodies in myocardial infarct and stenocardia].

Blood antibodies to DNA were investigated in 65 patients with myocardial infarction, 54 patients with angina pectoris and 19 clinically normal subjects. Antibodies to formalinized DNA could be detected with similar frequencies in both myocardial infarction and angina pectoris, although their titres were different in terms of value and pattern. Antibodies to denatured and especially native DNA were a less common finding, mostly associated with a more aggravated course of the disease. No blood antibodies could be detected in fatal cases of myocardial infarction, and in cardiogenic shock, their titres were small. The measurement of antibodies to DNA can be used for clinical assessment of the disease's course and prognosis.

[Effect of ultrasound on cellular and humoral immunity factors].

Experiments on CBA mice were performed to explore the changes in the body immunoreactivity induced by low intensity ultrasound. A study was made of the content of lysozyme, properdine, T and B rosette-forming lymphocytes, and complement in the peripheral blood, the histophysiological properties of the lymphoid organs, and the titer of pertussis antibodies. It has been disclosed that ultrasound has a stimulant effect, primarily on the T system immunity, which was confirmed during immunization with B. pertussis vaccine. The stimulant effect has been also supported by histostructural analysis of the lymphoid organs.

[Ability of components of pertussis bacteria to induce delayed-type hypersensitivity to DNA].

Bordetella pertussis vaccine contains antigens which are capable to evoke delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) reactions to deoxyribonucleic acid, except specific antipertussis response in mice. This phenomenon signifies the possibility of the autoimmune process. The purified derivatives of B. pertussis maintain specific activity but do not stimulate the expression of DTH to DNA.

[Induction of antibodies to native DNA by components of Bordetella pertussis].

Administration of Bordetella pertussis and some of their components to mice induced an increase of DNA-binding activity of the sera revealed under ionic strength conditions of physiological saline, mostly on the 14th day. It was shown by the inhibition method that interaction between mouse sera and native DNA was specific. Maximum increase in the quantity of mouse sera proteins reacting with DNA under low ionic strength condition of physiological saline (0.05 M NaCl) is revealed on the 7th day. However, in administration of Bordetella pertussis and their cytoplasmic membrane the elevated DNA-binding proteins content persisted up to 14 days.

[Characteristics of the low molecular antigens of pertussis bacteria].

The authors elaborated a method of obtaining pertussis soluble antigenic complex by dialysis through the cellophane membrane against the physiological saline at a temperature of 4 degrees C. An antigen which was active in the passive hemagglutination and neutralization of antibodies tests was revealed in the dialyzate. The amount of this antigen in the dialyzate increased gradually up to the 7th day and then became stabilized. The serological activity of the antigen after evaportation increased 4-16 times. The results of the antibody neutralization test pointed to the presence in the dialysate of substances common to those contained in the 1a and 1Da fractions isolated from the pertussis bacteria with the aid of ammounium sulfate.
