Prescription of so inoffensive-seeming and common a treatment as mucilaginous laxative may have major (if rare) side effects, such as sudden esophageal obstruction. This usually occurs in old people who do not take enough water with the laxative and who may have minor esophageal pathology such as motility disorders or epibronchic diverticulum. The usually typical symptoms are sudden onset, with retrosternal pain, dysphagia or total aphagia, alimentary vomiting and pseudohypersialorrhea. Diagnosis is always by radiography and endoscopy. Radiography must be performed with gastrografin, due to the risk of bronchoaspiration or esophageal fissure. Endoscopy may demonstrate the mucilagenous mass responsible for the obstruction and in most cases restore patency of the esophagus. This technique should always be attempted, if necessary several times, before resorting to surgery. The authors stress that in patients with a risk of esophageal obstruction, such as old people with esophageal disorders, it is essential to explain clearly to the patient that the laxative must be taken with a sufficient quantity of liquid.
An extra 16S rRNA gene (s-16S rDNA) from the Euglena gracilis chloroplast genome and several hundred positions of its flanking regions have been sequenced. The structural part has 1486 positions and is to 98% homologous in its sequence with the 16S rRNA gene in functional chloroplast rRNA operons. Sequences of about 200 positions upstream and 15 positions downstream of the structural part of the s-16S rRNA gene region are highly homologous with corresponding parts in the functional operon. Neither tRNA genes (A1a, I1e) nor parts of the 23S and 5S rRNA genes are found within 557 positions after the 3' end of the s-16S rRNA gene, i.e., the 330 bp homology, observed in electron microscopic studies of heteroduplexes (4), between the s-16S rDNA downstream region and the 6.2 kb repeated segment containing the functional rRNA operon, must be due to a DNA stretch in the interoperon spacer. A structural model of the "truncated rRNA operon" is presented. Results from S-1 endonuclease analysis suggest that the s-16S rDNA region is probably not transcribed into stable s-16S rRNA.

The nucleotide sequence of 16S rDNA from Euglena gracilis chloroplasts has been determined representing the first complete sequence of an algal chloroplast rRNA gene. The structural part of the 16S rRNA gene has 1491 nucleotides according to a comparative analysis of our sequencing results with the published 5'- and 3'-terminal "T1-oligonucleotides" from 16S rRNA from E. gracilis. Alignment with 16S rDNA from Zea mays chloroplasts and E. coli reveals 80 to 72% sequence homology, respectively. Two deletions of 9 and 23 nucleotides are found which are identical in size and position with deletions observed in 16S rDNA of maize and tobacco chloroplasts and which seem to be characteristic for all chloroplast rRNA species. We also find insertions and deletions in E. gracilis not seen in 16S rDNA of higher plant chloroplasts. The 16S rRNA sequence of E. gracilis chloroplasts can be folded by base pairing according to the general 16S rRNA secondary structure model.
1. Several behavioral tests were used to compare the pharmacological activity of the potential antidepressant UP 614-04 with those of viloxazine and imipramine. 2. Orally-administered UP 614-04, like viloxazine, reduced locomotor activity in mice, and, like viloxazine and imipramine, it antagonized the hypothermia or ptosis induced by reserpine or tetrabenazine and the hypothermia induced by a high dose of apomorphine. 3. UP 614-04 antagonized oxotremorine-induced hypothermia, and to a lesser extent, oxotremorine-induced tremors, indicating that it possesses some CNS anticholinergic activity. 4. Both imipramine and viloxazine were more potent than UP 614-04 in potentiating yohimbine toxicity in mice. 5. Orally-administered UP 614-04 potentiated d-amphetamine-induced stereotypy to a greater extent than viloxazine, but to a lesser extent than imipramine. 6. Intraperitoneally-injected UP 614-04 was much more potent than viloxazine in increasing tryptamine convulsive potential in rats, indicating that it might exert an inhibitory action on monoamine oxidase. 7. These results indicate that UP 614-04 has a behavioral profile that is consistent with an antidepressant action, but that it differs from imipramine and viloxazine.

A preliminary study of 119 observations yielded the first conclusions on the use of a new technique in thermal practice : the manosonic aerosol at La Bourboule. The best indications seem to be for sinusitis with cephalagia, allergic or not, and for the ear, hypoacusis, either by erous otitis or by repetitive otitis as well as tubal catarrh. Positive results are observed in about 75 % of cases. The limits and precautions in the use of this technique are also reported.
We report 10 cases of Campylobacter fetus infection, isolated during a 7-month period, which were all sensitive to erythromycin. The aetiology and epidemiology are discussed.

The 515 nm absorbance change was studied in mesophyll and bundle sheath chloroplasts of maize, which contain different amounts of grana. The amplitude of the 515 nm signal (induced by 3 micro seconds flashes repeated at 4 s intervals) has shown a correlation with the granum content of the samples. However, upon addition of N-methylphenazonium methosulphate the 515 nm signal became independent of the amount of grana: in agranal thylakoids a large pool of silent Photosystem I was activated and, as a result, the amplitude of the 515 nm signal of agranal chloroplasts increased to the level exhibited by granal chloroplasts. These data show that the 515 nm absorbance change is not limited to small closed vesicles like grana, but in the presence of suitable electron donors single lamellae of bundle sheath chloroplasts can also be active.
