The sea urchin sperm histone H2B readily forms a complex with heterologous H2A despite having an elongated N-terminal domain.

A test has been made of the postulate that interaction between histones H2A and H2B occurs only in the C-terminal domain of H2B and is independent of the N-terminal domain in which the sites of chemical modification occur. Sea urchin sperm H2B's have much extended N-terminal domains when compared to other studied H2B's and the interactions of Sphaerechinus granularis H2B1 with homologous H2A and with calf thymus H2A have been studied. Continuous variation analysis of circular dichroism results indicates that both homologous and heterologous H2A/H2B pairs can cooperatively form complexes, which in all cases involve the same number of helical residues (approximately equal to 80). It is concluded that although the sequence of the N-terminal domain of H2B can indirectly influence the free solution association constant with histone H2A, it does not take part in the interaction.

[Epidural stimulation for pain control (author's transl)].

Twenty consecutive cases of internalized epidural stimulators are reviewed. All patients presented with the "failed disc syndrome" following multiple laminectomies. Transcutaneous insertion technique is discussed and results as well as complications are reviewed. Good results on pain, together with regaining normal physical activity occurred in 50% of the cases in the past two years. While patients with a lateralized pain syndrome fared well, a bilateral distribution of pain results in many failures. One post-operative infection required removal of the stimulator. In six cases, electrode movements were considered as the cause of failure. Epidural stimulation is indicated in the treatment of chronic pain. Better patient selection and decrease in electrode movements should improve the results in the future.

Intrinsic and extrinsic fluorescence of histones H2A and H2B: a conformational study.

Intrinsic and extrinsic fluorescence measurements suggest that H2A and H2B histones, in a partially secondary structure, self-aggregate into assemblies in which some tyrosine groups are buried in a hydrophobic environment and show enhanced fluorescence, 2-p-toluidinylnaphthalene-6-sulfonate (TNS) indicates heterogeneity among the binding sites whose number depends on the pH values of the solutions. Warfarin, used as hydrophobic probe, shows that during the process of self-association and cross-complexing of the two histones there is the covering of some hydrophobic sites of the proteins.
