Keggin POM microtubes: a coincident product of crystal growth and species transformation.

Microtubes of alpha-K4SiW12O40 with the length around 1 cm and inner diameter and wall thickness in the ranges of 7-55 mum and 3-15 mum, respectively, were copiously fabricated by a one-step, template-free aqueous synthesis. The formation mechanism is discussed. The discovered tubular structure of the polyoxometalate is believed to be promising for use in templates, as a precursor of tungsten oxide ceramic microtubes, and for other uses associated with tubular structures.

Synthesis, characterization, and crystal structures of two novel high-nuclear nickel-substituted dimeric polyoxometalates.

Two novel high-nuclear Ni-substituted polyoxometalates Na9K[Ni7(OH)4(H2O)(CO3)2(HCO3)(A-alpha-SiW9O34)(beta-SiW10O37)].5H3O.18H2O (1) and K6Na4[{Ni6(H2O)4(mu2-H2O)4(mu3-OH)2}(x-SiW9O34)2].17.5H2O (2) have been obtained by reaction of K(8)[gamma-SiW10O36] with NiCl2.2H2O in basic conditions. Compounds 1 and 2 all represent the first polyoxometalates substituted by seven and six Ni centers, respectively. Also, compound 1 exhibits a novel asymmetric dimeric structure, composed of [A-alpha-SiW9O34]10- and [beta-SiW10O37]10- units linked by a Ni7 cluster and three carbonates, which exhibit tri- and bidentate coordination modes in 1.

New polyoxometalate compounds built up of lacunary Wells-Dawson anions and trivalent lanthanide cations.

Five new polyoxometalate compounds built on lacunary Wells-Dawson anions and trivalent lanthanide cations, KNa3[Nd2(H2O)10(alpha2-P2W17O61)].11H2O (1), (H3O)[Nd3(H2O)17(alpha2-P2W17O61)].6.75H2O (2), (H2bpy)2[Nd2(H2O)9 (alpha2-P2W17O61)].4.5H2O (3), (H2bpy)2[La2(H2O)9(alpha2-P2W17O61)].4.5H2O (4), and (H2bpy)2[Eu2(H2O)9(alpha2-P2W17O61)].5H2O (5), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 shows a bisupporting polyoxometalate cluster structure where two {Nd(H2O)7}3+ fragments are supported on the polyoxometalate dimer [{Nd(H2O)3(alpha2-P2W17O61)}2]14-; this represents the first bisupporting polyoxometalate compound based on a polyoxometalate dimer. Compound 2 displays a 1D chain structure built up of bisupporting polyoxoanions [{Nd(H2O)7}2{Nd(H2O)3(alpha2-P2W17O61)}2]8- and Nd3+ ions. Compounds 3-5 are isostructural and show a 2D structure constructed of 1D polyoxometalate chains of [Ln(H2O)2(alpha2-P2W17O61)]n(7n-) linked by Ln3+ ions. Compounds 2-5 represent the first extended structures formed by lacunary Wells-Dawson anions and trivalent lanthanide ions. The influence of the Ln3+/[alpha2-P2W17O61]10- ratio on the syntheses of these five compounds has been studied. Furthermore, the fluorescent activity of compound 5 is reported.

Synthesis and evolution of PbS nanocrystals through a surfactant-assisted solvothermal route.

We present a surfactant-assisted solvothermal approach for the controllable synthesis of a PbS nanocrystal at low temperature (85 degrees C). Nanotubes (400 nm in length with an outer diameter of 30 nm), bundle-like long nanorods (about 5-15 mum long and an average diameter of 100 nm), nanowires (5-20 mum in length and with a diameter of 20-50 nm), short nanorods (100-300 nm in length and an axial ratio of 5-10), nanoparticles (25 nm in width with an aspect ratio of 2), and nanocubes (a short axis length of 10 nm and a long axis length of 15 nm) were successfully prepared and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction pattern. A series of experimental results indicated that several experimental factors, such as AOT concentration, ratio of [water]/[surfactant], reaction time, and ratio of the reagents, play key roles in the final morphologies of PbS. Possible formation mechanisms of PbS nanorods and nanotubes were proposed.

Fabrication of high quality carbon nanotubes with a simple ethanol-assisted arc discharge process.

In this paper, a simplified ethanol-assisted arc discharge method was developed for the fabrication of multi-wall carbon nanotubes in high quality. Carbon nanotubes with high purity (80-90%) were obtained through controlling the current (15-25 V, 10-25 A) and ethanol concentration (70-100%). The products were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectrometry.

[Assessment of therapeutic results for simple bone cyst with percutaneous injection of autogenous bone marrow].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic results of percutaneous injection of autogenous bone marrow for simple bone cyst and to analyze the prognostic factors of the treatment. METHODS: From March 2000 to June 2005, 31 patients with simple bone cysts were treated by percutaneous injection of autogenous bone marrow. Of 31 patients, there were 18 males and 13 females, aged 5 years and 7 months to 15 years. The locations were proximal humerus in 18 cases, proximal femur in 7 cases and other sites in 6 cases. Two cases were treated with repeated injections. The operative process included percutaneous aspiration of fluid in the bone cysts and injection of autogenous bone marrow aspirated from posterior superior iliac spine. The mean volume of marrow injected was 40 ml (30-70 ml). RESULTS: No complications were noted during treatment. Thirty patients were followed for an average of 2.2 years (1-5 years) with 2 cases out of follow-up. After one injection of bone marrow, 9 cysts (29.0%) were healed up completely, 7 cysts (22.6%) basically healed up, 13 cysts (41.9%) healed up partially and 2 (6.5%) had no response. The satisfactory and effective rates were 67.7% and 93.5% respectively. There was significant difference between active stage group and resting stage group(P<0.05). There were no statistically significant difference in therapeutic results between groups of different ages, lesion sites or bone marrow hyperplasia(P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Percutaneous injection of autogenous bone marrow is a safe and effective method to treat simple bone cyst, but repeated injections is necessary for some patients. The therapeutic results are better in cysts at resting stage than those at active stage.

Layer-by-layer assembly of polyoxometalates into microcapsules.

The polyoxometalate (POM) chemistry world has been experiencing an unparalleled development of rapid synthesis of new compounds and slow development of POM-based functional materials and devices. Meanwhile, researchers in the microcapsule world, encouraged by the introduction of the layer-by-layer method, are pursuing good components for constructing functional capsule devices. Here, in view of the versatile properties that POM-based microcapsules may possess, various types of POM-polyelectrolyte composite microcapsules were constructed using the layer-by-layer method. Microscopy reveals that polyoxometalates form nanoparticles on the shell in the presence of cationic polyelectrolytes. These nanoparticles connected with polyelectrolytes constitute the shell and support the microcapsule from collapse after drying, and this is an interesting characteristic different from those of common composite and polyelectrolyte capsules. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), UV-vis absorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to examine the properties of the POMs in the microcapsules. The obtained microcapsules exhibit higher thermal stability than polyelectrolyte microcapsules. Furthermore, the functions of POMs were maintained when they were assembled into microcapsules. It is proved that microcapsules bearing POMs with redox activity can provide a reduction environment, which can lead to the realization of in situ synthesis of materials, and that microcapsules with photoluminescent POMs as a component can also have a photoluminescent property, providing a way to develop functional capsule devices. This work may provide an opportunity to enrich both the polyoxometalate chemistry and the capsule field.

Electrochemistry of ITO electrode modified by multilayer ultrathin films based on crown-shaped polyoxomolybdate.

The electrochemical multilayer films of crown-shaped polyoxomolybdate Na21{[Na5(H2O)14] intersection[Mo(V)(20)Mo(VI)(26)O134(OH)10(mu-CH3COO)4]}.CH3COONa.90H2O (Mo46) and polyelectrolytes by layer-by-layer assembly were investigated. The stable multilayer films were assembled by alternate adsorption of negatively charged POM and positively charged polyelectrolytes is from their aqueous dispersions. UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were used to monitor the regular growth of the multilayer films. The multilayer films-modified ITO electrode was used for the detection of electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of nitrite, bromate, and hydrogen peroxide. The proposed novel immobilized method exhibited good stability, reproducibility and high sensitivity for the determination of electrocatalytic, which is important for practical application.

Electrochromic multilayer films of tunable color by combination of copper or iron complex and monolacunary dawson-type polyoxometalate.

Electrochromic multilayer films consisting of polyoxometalate (POM) cluster alpha-K(10)[P(2)W(17)O(61)].17H(2)O (P(2)W(17)), copper(II) complex [Cu(II)(phen)(2)](NO(3))(2) (phen = 1,10-phenithroline), and iron complex [Fe(II)(phen)(3)](ClO(4))(2) were fabricated on silicon, quartz and ITO substrates by layer-by-layer self-assembly method. The multilayer films, PSS/Cu(II)(phen)(2)/[(P(2)W(17)/Cu(II)(phen)(2))](n) and PSS/Fe(II)(phen)(3)/[(P(2)W(17)/Fe(II) (phen)(3))](n) were characterized by UV-vis spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectra, cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometric (CA) and in-situ spectral electrochemical measurements. The interesting feature of the electrochromic film is its adjustable color by reduction of both transition metal complex and polyoxometalate at different potentials. The multilayer films also exhibit high optical contrast, suitable response time and low operation potential due to the presence of mono-lacunary-substituted polyoxometalate and transition metal complex. This is the first example that the color of electrochromic film can be adjustable, which gives valuable information for exploring new electrochromic materials with tunable colors.

Covalent assembly of shortened multiwall carbon nanotubes on polyelectrolyte films and relevant electrochemistry study.

A significant and versatile approach was developed for perpendicularly aligning multiwall carbon nanotubes on diverse substrates suitable for layer-by-layer self-assembly. The multiwall carbon nanotubes (s-MWNTs) used were shortened with oxidation under ultrasonic and functionalized with acyl chloride in thionyl chloride (SOCl2). The monolayer of s-MWNTs perpendicularly grafted to the substrate was obtained by dipping the polyelectrolyte modifying substrate into a tetrahydrofuran suspension of the functionalized s-MWNTs. The interaction proved to be stable and not liable to be affected by the ambience. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to examine the morphology of the MWNTs and s-MWNTs grafted on the substrates. Raman spectroscopy was applied to verify the existence of s-MWNTs for assembly, and Fourier transform infrared absorption spectra were used to investigate the interaction pattern between s-MWNTs and polyelectrolyte. The electrochemistry properties of the monolayer of s-MWNTs when the substrate was indium-tin oxide were studied.

New types of the flexible self-assembled metal-organic coordination polymers constructed by aliphatic dicarboxylates and rigid bidentate nitrogen ligands.

The reaction of metal ions, flexible aliphatic dicarboxylates and rigid bidentate linear ligands under mild conditions in water afford four novel metal-organic coordination polymers, [Cd(mu-mal)(mu-pyz)(0.5)(H(2)O)](n) 1 (mal = malonate dianion, pyz = pyrazine), [Cd(2)(mu-suc)(2)(mu-pyz)(H(2)O)(2)](n) 2 (suc = succinate dianion), and ([M(mu-bipy)(H(2)O)4][suc].4H(2)O)(n)(M = Co, 3, M = Zn, 4, bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine). The molecular structures of 1-4 have been established by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. 1 is a 3D network being composed of layers of octahedrally coordinated Cd atoms bridged by malonate anions in syn-anti configurations within the layers and pyz molecules between layers. Unlike that in 1, each Cd atom in 2 displays uncommon pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry to form 2D infinite grid sheets with square grid dimensions of ca. 7.936 x 7.936 [Angstrom]. Both 3 and 4 exhibit 1D linear -M-bipy-M-bipy- chain polymers, and these chains were packed as ...ABCABC... layered structures. The bridging succinate ligands in 2 adopt the syn-anti mode with a torsion angle of 60.8(7) degrees, while the solvated succinate ligands in 3 and 4 adopt the anti-anti mode with a torsion angle of 180.0 degrees. To our knowledge, compound 2 represents the first example of flexible self-assembled succinate-pyrazine mixed bridging ligand coordination network. 3 and 4 are the first two cases of succinate-bipy polymers with non-coordinated succinate. The magnetic behavior for 3 was studied in the temperature range of 5-300 K. The result indicates the occurrence of a weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the cobalt(II) ions.

Photochromic inorganic-organic multilayer films based on polyoxometalates and poly(ethylenimine).

Novel photochromic inorganic-organic multilayers composed of polyoxometalates and poly(ethylenimine) have been prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly method. The growth process, composition, surface topography, and photochromic properties of the multilayer films were investigated by UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, electrospin resonance (ESR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Irradiated with ultraviolet light, the transparent films changed from colorless to blue. Moreover, the blue films showed good reversibility of photochromism and could recover the colorless state gradually in air, where oxygen plays an important role in the bleaching process. On account of the ESR and XPS results, parts of W6+ in multilayers were reduced to W5+, which exhibited a characteristic blue; a possible photochromic mechanism can be speculated. This work provides basic guideline for the assembly of multilayers with photochromic properties.

Synthesis and characterization of ultrathin multilayer films based on molybdenum polyoxometalate (Mo(54)).

The crown-shaped molybdenum polyoxometalate cluster Na(26)[[Na(H(2)O)(2)](6)[(micro(3) -OH)(4) (Mo(20)(V)), (Mo(34)(VI)(O)(164) (micro-CH(3)COO(4)) x 120H(2)O(Mo(54)) was synthesized and first used as a bulk modifier to fabricate a three-dimensional modified WIGE electrode by the layer-by-layer method. The (Mo(54))/PAH)(n) multilayer films have been characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). UV-vis measurements reveal regular film growth with each Mo(54) adsorption. The electrochemical method was used to characterize the modified WIGE electrode, which is important for practical applications.
