Surfactant-assisted synthesis of Keggin-type polyoxometalates nanorods.

It was demonstrated that Keggin-type polyoxometalates nanorods (POMs-nanorods) were prepared from a solution containing a surfactant polyethylene glycol (PEG), when heteropolyanions [X(n+)M12O40](-(8-n)) (X(n+) = P5+ and Si4+; M = W and Mo) were precipitated by ammonia ion obtained by hydrolysis of urea at 373 K. In this method, PEG was used as a template and ammonia ion (NH4+) was a counterion. In an oil bath kept at 373 K without stirring, three kinds of ammonium salts of POMs, i.e., (NH4)3PW12O40, (NH4)4SiW12O40, and (NH4)3PMo12O40 nanorods were obtained. The POMs-nanorods were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), infrared spectra (IR), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). TEM showed that nanorods were 0.5-1.5 microm in length, and 50-150 nm in diameter. The results of IR, ICP-AES and XRD proved the existence of Keggin structure. The formation process of POMs-nanorods, (NH4)(8-n) [X(n+)M12O40](-(8-n)) (X(n+) = P5+ and Si4+; M = W and Mo) in a H2O/PEG system was discussed.

Shape and size control of ZnO nanostructures via a simple solution route.

ZnO nanostructures with different morphologies were synthesized by condensing the Zn(OH)4(2-) precursors under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of a surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). Shape and size control of ZnO nanostructures was achieved by relatively simple variations of molar ratio of CTAB to Zn(OH)4(2-). With a higher molar ratio, ZnO nanotubes were obtained, whereas with a lower molar ratio, ZnO nanorods were formed; furthermore, with a moderate w value, the coexistence of ZnO nanorods and nanotubes was also observed. The photoluminescence of ZnO nanorods and nanotubes was also investigated.

A simple route towards CuO nanowires and nanorods.

CuO nanowires and nanorods were synthesized through a novel controllable solution-phase hydrothermal method using a nonionic surfactant polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the structure-directing template. The lengths of obtained 1D CuO nanostructures could be successfully controlled through choosing different molecular weights of PEG. The phase structures and morphologies were investigated by XRD, TEM, HRTEM and SAED. The formation mechanisms of the nanorods and nanowires were investigated and discussed on the basis of the experimental results.

A new type of single-helix coordination polymer with mixed ligands [M2(phen)2(e,a-cis-1,4-chdc)2(H2O)2]n (M=Co and Ni; phen=1,10-phenanthroline; chdc=cyclohexanedicarboxylate).

A new family of single-stranded helices coordination polymers with mixed ligands, [M2(phen)2(e,a-cis-1,4-chdc)2(H2O)2]n (1, M=Co; 2, M=Ni; chdc=cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid; phen=1,10-phenanthroline), were prepared under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectra, TG analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. X-ray crystal structural analyses reveal that 1 and 2 are isomorphic and belong to the monoclinic system. C40H36Co2N4O10, P2(1)/c, a=10.0566(5) A, b=8.8843(5) A, c=20.2912(14) A, beta=100.052(3) degrees, Z=2 for 1; and C40H36Ni2N4O10, P2(1)/c, a=9.8921(6) A, b=9.0151(4) A, c=20.1628(17) A, beta=100.31(2) degrees, Z=2 for 2. In the structures of 1 and 2, the 1,4-chdc ligand possesses only one kind of e,a-cis-conformation although there are both cis- and trans-conformations in the raw material. Two oxygen atoms of one carboxyl in 1,4-chdc ligand and another oxygen atom of contraposition carboxyl link adjacent Co or Ni atoms into an infinite 1-D zigzag chain. The most attractive structural feature of 1 and 2 is that they both exhibit an infinite chiral chainlike structure with 2(1) helices along the b axis. In addition, the right-handed and the left-handed chains are alternate. Meanwhile, the adjacent chains of 1 and 2 are linked via hydrogen bonds into 2-D network structures, which further form 3-D frameworks via pi-pi interactions of 1,10-phen.

Synthesis, crystal structure, and photochromism of novel two-dimensional supramolecular networks based on Keggin-type polyoxoanion and lanthanide coordination cations.

Three new compounds [Ln(NMP)(4)(H(2)O)(4)][H(x)()GeMo(12)O(40)].2NMP.3H(2)O (Ln = Ce(IV) (1), Pr(IV) (2), x = 0; Ln = Nd(III) (3), x = 1; NMP = N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) have been prepared in aqueous solution and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-vis, and TG analyses. The single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that all three compounds are isostructural. In their structures, an interesting two-dimensional supramolecular network is constructed by the [GeMo(12)O(40)](4)(-) anion and [Ln(NMP)(4)(H(2)O)(4)](3+/4+) cation building blocks via hydrogen-bonding interactions, exhibiting the porous structure. Upon irradiation with UV light, the crystals of 1-3 show photochromic behavior.

Hydrothermal synthesis and structure of a new helical chain constructed from only molybdenum-oxide building blocks.

The compound [NH(3)(CH(2))(2)NH(2)(CH(2))(2)NH(3)](2)[Mo(9)O(30)] was synthesized at 170 degrees C via hydrothermal techniques from the starting materials of Na(2)MoO(4).H(2)O, NH(2)(CH(2))(2)NH(CH(3))(2)NH(2), and H(2)O. The compound crystallizes in the space group C2/c of the monoclinic system with a = 21.308(4) A, b = 9.234(2) A, c = 19.195(4) A, beta = 120.27(3) degrees, V = 3261.9(11)A(3), Z = 4. Two novel and symmetrically related helices coexist in the centrosymmetric solid, in which the two kinds of helices appear in the left-handed and right-handed enantiomorphs, respectively. This is the first example of a helical chain structure consisting of only molybdenum-oxide building blocks. The central axis about each helical chain is a 2-fold screw axis.

The first fluoride one-dimensional nanostructures: microemulsion-mediated hydrothermal synthesis of BaF2 whiskers.

A convenient microemulsion-mediated hydrothermal process was employed for the first synthesis of BaF2 whiskers with lengths up to 50 mum and aspects ratios as high as 1000, each of which is a single crystal with a growth direction of (111). A directed aggregation growth process mediated by the microemulsion droplet building blocks is proposed for the formation of BaF2 whiskers.

Novel polyoxometalate-templated, 3-D supramolecular networks based on lanthanide dimers: synthesis, structure, and fluorescent properties of [Ln2(DNBA)4(DMF)8][Mo6O19] (DNBA = 3,5-dinitrobenzoate).

The spherical Lindquist type polyoxometalate, Mo(6)O(19)(2)(-), has been used as a noncoordinating anionic template for the construction of novel three-dimensional lanthanide-aromatic monocarboxylate dimer supramolecular networks [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)][Mo(6)O(19)] (Ln = La 1, Ce 2, and Eu 3, DNBA = 3,5-dinitrobenzoate, DMF = dimethylformamide). The title compounds are characterized by elemental analyses, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffractions. X-ray diffraction experiments reveal that two Ln(III) ions are bridged by four 3,5-dinitrobenzoate anions as asymmetrically bridging ligands, leading to dimeric cores, [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)](2+); [Ln(2)(DNBA)(4)(DMF)(8)](2+) groups are joined together by pi-pi stacking interactions between the aromatic groups to form a two-dimensional grid-like network; the 2-D supramolecular layers are further extended into 3-D supramolecular networks with 1-D box-like channels by hydrogen-bonding interactions, in which hexamolybdate polyanions reside. The compounds represent the first examples of 3-D carboxylate-bridged lanthanide dimer supramolecular "host" networks formed by pi-pi stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions encapsulating noncoordinating "guest" polyoxoanion species. The fluorescent activity of compound 3 is reported.

Modified polyoxometalates: Hydrothermal syntheses and crystal structures of three novel reduced and capped Keggin derivatives decorated by transition metal complexes.

Three novel polyoxometalate derivatives decorated by transition metal complexes have been hydrothermally synthesized. Compound 1 consists of [PMo(VI)(6)Mo(V)(2)V(IV)(8)O(44)[Co (2,2'-bipy)(2)(H(2)O)](4)](3+) polyoxocations and [PMo(VI)(4-)Mo(V)(4)V(IV)(8)O(44)[Co(2,2'-bipy)(2)(H(2)O)](2)](3-) polyoxoanions, which are both built on mixed-metal tetracapped [PMo(8)V(8)O(44)] subunits covalently bonded to four or two [Co(2,2'-bpy)(2)(H(2)O)](2+) clusters via terminal oxo groups of the capping V atoms. Compound 2 is built on [PMo(VI)(8)V(IV)(6)O(42)[Cu(I)(phen)](2)](5-) clusters constructed from mixed-metal bicapped [PMo(VI)(8)V(IV)(6)O(42)](7-) subunits covalently bonded to two [Cu(phen)](+) fragments in the similar way to 1. The structure of 3 is composed of [PMo(VI)(9)Mo(V)(3)O(40)](6-) units capped by two divalent Ni atoms via four bridging oxo groups. Selected-control synthesis of PbO2 and Pb3O4 single-crystalline nanorods.

Reaction of Pb(OH)3- with ClO- in the presence of surfactant CTAB under conventional conditions resulted in PbO2 nanorods, whereas the reaction under hydrothermal conditions afforded Pb3O4 nanorods, as confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Selected area electron diffraction (SEAD) and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) revealed that both PbO2 and Pb3O4 nanorods are single crystalline. For the formation of Pb3O4 nanorods, it is reasonable that PbO2 slowly decomposes to Pb3O4 under hydrothermal conditions, while retaining the morphology of PbO2.

New high-dimensional networks based on polyoxometalate and crown ether building blocks.

Three novel supramolecular assemblies constructed from polyoxometalate and crown ether building blocks, [(DB18C6)Na(H(2)O)(1.5)](2)Mo(6)O(19).CH(3)CN, 1, and [(Na(DB18C6)(H(2)O)(2))(3)(H(2)O)(2)]XMo(12)O(40).6DMF.CH(3)CN (X = P, 2, and As, 3; DB18C6 = dibenzo-18-crown-6; DMF = N,N-dimethylfomamide), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-vis, EPR, TG, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/mbm with a = 16.9701(6) A, c = 14.2676(4) A, and Z = 2. Compound 2 crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P6(3)/m with a = 15.7435(17) A, c = 30.042(7) A, gamma = 120 degrees, and Z = 2. Compound 3 crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P6(3)/m with a = 15.6882(5) A, c = 29.9778(18) A, gamma = 120 degrees, and Z = 2. Compound 1 exhibits an unusual three-dimensional network with one-dimensional sandglasslike channels based on the extensive weak forces between the oxygen atoms on the [Mo(6)O(19)](2)(-) polyoxoanions and the CH(2) groups of crown ether molecules. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural, and both contain a novel semiopen cagelike trimeric cation [(Na(DB18C6)(H(2)O)(2))(3)(H(2)O)(2)](3+). In their packing arrangement, an interesting 2-D "honeycomblike" "host" network is formed, in which the [XMo(12)O(40)](3)(-) (X = As and P) polyoxoanion "guests" resided.

Novel hydrogen-bonded three-dimensional networks encapsulating one-dimensional covalent chains: [M(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)(4)](4-abs)(2).nH2O (4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine; 4-abs = 4-aminobenzenesulfonate) (M = Co, n = 1; M = Mn, n = 2).

Two novel compounds, [Co(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(4)](4-abs)(2).H(2)O (1) and [Mn(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(4)](4-abs)(2).2H(2)O (2) (4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine; 4-abs = 4-aminobenzenesulfonate), have been synthesized in aqueous solution and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analyses, UV-vis and IR spectra, and TG analysis. X-ray structural analysis revealed that 1 and 2 both possess unusual hydrogen-bonded three-dimensional (3-D) networks encapsulating one-dimensional (1-D) covalently bonded infinite [M(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(4)](2+) (M = Co, Mn) chains. The 4-abs anions in 1 form 1-D zigzag chains through hydrogen bonds. These chains are further extended through crystallization water molecules into 3-D hydrogen-bonded networks with 1-D channels, in which the [Co(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(4)](2+) linear covalently bonded chains are located. Crystal data for 1: C(22)H(30)CoN(4)O(11)S(2), monoclinic P2(1), a = 11.380(2) A, b = 8.0274(16) A, c = 15.670(3) A, alpha = gamma = 90 degrees, beta = 92.82(3) degrees, Z = 2. Compound 2 contains interesting two-dimensional (2-D) honeycomb-like networks formed by 4-abs anions and lattice water molecules via hydrogen bonding, which are extended through other crystallization water molecules into three dimensions with 1-D hexagonal channels. The [Mn(4,4'-bipy)(H(2)O)(4)](2+) linear covalent chains exist in these channels. [Quantitative study of the cellular nuclear DNA contents in odontogenic cysts and ameloblastoma].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the proliferative potential of the epithelial cells in odontogenic keratocyst, radicular cyst, dentigerous cyst and ameloblastoma. METHODS: DNA contents and ploidy of basal and spinous cells in keratocyst, radicular cyst, dentigerous cyst, and the peripheral column cells and central reticular cells in ameloblastoma were analysis respectively. RESULTS: The more and higher DNA contents and the proliferating ploidy of keratocyst and ameloblastoma than those of radicular cyst and dentigerous cyst indicate the active proliferating potential. The spinous cells showed more active proliferating growth than the basal cells of keratocyst. The higher DNA contents of radicular cyst are related to the stimulus of the inflammation. The dentigerous cysts have more di-ploidy cells without active growth potential. CONCLUSIONS: The active cell proliferating growth in keratocyst and ameloblastoma is probably the pathological basis of their local aggressive biological behavior.
