Herpes simplex and varicella-zoster infections: clinical and laboratory diagnosis.

One of a dentist's most common diagnostic challenges is determining the cause of vesiculo-ulcerative disorders of the oral cavity. The most common etiology of oral vesicles is herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a less common etiology of vesicles in the oral cavity. Dentists often are able to differentiate these two viruses based on the clinical presentation of infectious symptoms; however, further laboratory testing is required to identify herpetically induced vesiculo-ulcerative lesions definitively. This article reviews the basic clinical signs and symptoms of HSV and VZV infection and describes the various laboratory tests that can determine the definitive etiology of the vesiculo-ulcerative disorder.

Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma: a case report and review of the literature.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) as an indolent B-cell lymphoma. This disease involves a heterogeneous group of B-cell tumors that occurs primarily within the lymph nodes, spleen, or extranodal tissues. Initial MZL treatment consists of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy and is associated with a high survival rate when detected early. This article highlights an unusual case of extranodal MZL in the parotid area.

An oral complication in a patient with cyclic vomiting syndrome: a case report and review.

Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) is a disorder seen primarily in children. It is characterized by a number of clinical symptoms; the most prominent are recurrent, self-limited episodes of intractable nausea and vomiting that are not caused by any specific disease. CVS can be severely debilitating and may interfere with an individual's quality of life. This article describes a patient with CVS who sought treatment for complications after dental extractions, reviews important aspects of this disease, and discusses its potential significance as it relates to the present case.
