Chronobiological aspects of melatonin-produced antioxidant effects in senescent rats.

Melatonin in low doses of (0.05 and 0.5 mg/kg) administered to senescent rats in winter and summer inhibited free radical oxidation and LPO. The antioxidant effect of melatonin increased with increasing the dose of the hormone. Changes in test parameters were more pronounced in winter, but the directionality of changes did not depend on the duration of the light period.

[Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defence in patients with pneumoconiosis and dust-induced bronchitis].

Lipids peroxidation (LP) and antioxidant defence (AD) were compared in the patients facing pneumoconiosis and dust bronchitis. The studied group included 35 patients with suspected pneumoconiosis, 75 patients facing the 1 grade of pneumoconiosis, 43 coniotuberculosis patients and 43 patients with dust bronchitis. Active LP was demonstrated, values and intensities of its stages depended on the origin and severity of disease. AD was characteristically depressed, which necessitates the antioxidant treatment of patients with pneumoconiosis and dust bronchitis.

[Lipid peroxidation in the liver microsomes--a sensitive link in body exposure to vat dyes].

Experiments on male white rats showed that the soluble forms of vat dyes such as red brown 'G' (RBG) and bright green 'G' (BGG) delivered into the stomach in a toxic dose (1 g/kg) activate lipid peroxidation (LPO) in liver microsomes. Chronically inhaled dyes hasten of slow down some LPO stages, the changes depending on the concentration, duration of exposure and chemical structure of a compound. Soluble vat dye RBG increases LPO in concentration 5 mg/m3 whereas RBG shows antioxidant action in high and low concentrations.

[The importance of antioxidants in the combined treatment of patients with dust-induced bronchitis].

A study of 119 patients with dust-induced bronchitis revealed an activation of lipid peroxidation depending on the stage of the disease (I, II, III) manifested by an increase of blood serum diene conjugates, hydroperoxides and/or malonic aldehyde. Use of antioxidants--vitamin E and prednisolone as well as heparine resulted in complete or partial correction of lipid peroxidation and favourable clinical effect.

[Pulmonary surfactant system in dust-induced bronchitis].

The study of surfactant effects and their biochemical composition in the expiration condensate covered 102 patients with dust bronchitis (DB). Decrease of surfactant effects and violation of the proportion of surfactant lipid fractions (increase in the percentage of free fat acids, triacylglyceride decrease) were noted along with the growth of DB severity and clearly defined pulmonary emphysema.

[Characteristics of myocardial metabolic disorders in rats as affected by alternating magnetic fields of varying parameters].

It was shown in experiments on albino rats that repeated exposure to an alternating field of 32 kA/m voltage leads to the reduction in the content of glycogen, lactic and pyruvic acid and the reduced form of nicotinamide coenzymes and to delayed processes of oxidation and phosphorylation without changing the degree of their coupling and the level of macroergic phosphates. An alternating magnetic field with a voltage of 7.5 kA/m leads to an increase in the level of glycogen and glutamine in half a month, causes accumulation of ammonia in three months, increases the content of glutamine and reduces the glucose level after six months of exposure.
