Use of Pressurease and Airform mattresses in pressure ulcer care.

Large cell dynamic air mattresses are effective in the prevention of pressure ulcers but they still have inherent problems, e.g. the ability of the mattresses to move patients along the mattress through the inflation and deflation of the cells. Also, there have been reports that the inflation and deflation of cells can cause motion sickness. This article reviews two mattresses from Sareo Healthcare Ltd: a static system, Pressurease; and a unique dynamic system, Airform. These two systems offer a cost-effective and clinically effective method of pressure ulcer prevention and therapy.

Karomed armchairs and cushions in the prevention of pressure ulcers.

The clinician providing seating for patients who are unwell, who have poor functional ability or who are at risk of pressure sores, is faced with an increasing choice of products. Making the decision as to which product and associated features to choose can be a difficult task. This article describes the importance of suitable seating provision in patients who are at risk and outlines the Karomed range of armchairs.

SuperSkin: the management of skin susceptible to breakdown.

Few studies have been undertaken in the area of skin protection, even though maintaining tissue viability in the event of incontinence, shear forces and the potential for exudate to macerate periwound areas remains a challenge for any nurse caring for patients. This article outlines and discusses the problems associated with overhydrated tissues and shear forces and the potential for SuperSkin liquid film dressing, marketed by CliniMed, to provide a solution.

Pathology of osseous and genitourinary lesions of Proteus syndrome.

A male patient followed from the age of 3 to 25 years was eventually diagnosed as having Proteus syndrome. He was born with linear epidermal nevi of the neck and forearm and presented with macrodactyly of the right hand and progressive hemihypertrophy of the right lower limb recurring after multiple reduction operations. The bone ends showed disorderly overgrowth of hyaline and fibrocartilage mixed with collagen and bone, and early differential diagnoses included Ollier's disease. The child also had vertebral anomalies, scoliosis, a bony protrusion of the cranial vertex, and strabismus. In the second decade he developed gyriform swelling of the soles, retinopathy, bilateral papillary cysts of the epididymis, and a giant cyst of the left kidney with complex glandular foci. At 22 years a 3-cm meningioma containing adipose tissue was resected, and at 24 years a 3-cm cellular nodule of the rete testis with hyperchromatic foci, probably an adenoma, was removed. The features of Proteus syndrome were those of hyperplasia and neoplasia of mostly mesodermal tissues. Unlike other reported cases, overgrowth of a finger recurred at 25 years.

Sitting: pressure ulcer development.

Seating is a major factor in pressure ulcer development, but it is frequently overlooked in the literature on pressure area management. Pressure ulcers are largely preventable and nurses are integral to the promotion of good practice. The author examines how implementing careful patient assessment, correct positioning and providing optimum seating equipment can help to reduce the risk of pressure ulcer development.
