The major prostaglandin (PG) synthesized by homogenates of the rat uterus and ovary in vitro was prostacyclin (PGI-2), has reflected by the amounts of 6-oxo-PGF-1 alpha produced. Thromboxane production by both tissues was low, whereas appreciable quantities of PGF-2 alpha, PGE-2 and PGD-2 were produced. Prostaglandin production by the uterus was higher on Day 1 (oestrus) than on Day 3 (dioestrus), although the ratio of the amounts of the PGs formed remained fairly constant for each day. There was no daily variation in the amounts of PGs synthesized by the ovary. Metabolism of PGF-2 alpha by the rat uterus and ovaries was generally low, although the ovaries had a higher metabolizing capacity than the uterus. Metabolism by the uterus was higher on Day 1 than on Day 3 of the cycle. The decreased production of PG by the uterus on Day 3 is therefore not due to increased metabolism.
In a series of experiments, 10 calves were infected by different routes with bovine mammillitis strain of bovid herpesvirus 2 (BHV2). Nine of the calves developed lesions and BHV2 was isolated from 8 calves. At intervals, after clinical recovery, the calves were given a course of corticosteroid by intravenous injection. Subsequently 7 calves developed lesions and from 3 calves BHV2 was reisolated. The shortest interval between initial infection and reisolation of virus was 10 weeks. In one calf virus was recovered on 3 occasions, at intervals of 20, 44 and 74 weeks post-infection. It is probable that BHV2 can occur as a latent infection in calves and that BHV2 should be included among the herpesviruses known to remain latent.

This paper reviews some of the questions that have been asked by experts and others as to why nuclear power plants are not located or placed underground. While the safeguards and present designs make such installations unnecessary, there are some definite advantages that warrant the additional cost involved. First of all, such an arrangement does satisfy the psychological concern of a number of people and, in so doing, might gain the acceptance of the public so that such plants could be constructed in urban areas of load centers. The results of these studies are presented and some of the requirements necessary for underground installations described, including rock conditions, depth of facilities, and economics.

A solid phase colloidal gold immunoelectron microscopy (IGEM) technique for detecting bovine coronavirus (BCV) was developed and shown to be specific. This test was compared with three other diagnostic tests using fifteen faecal samples. Bovine coronavirus was detected in 2 samples by direct electron microscopy (DEM), in 3 samples by immunosorbent electron microscopy, in 5 samples by haemadsorption-elution-haemagglutination and in 6 samples by IGEM. Ninety four faecal samples were tested by DEM and IGEM. Of 26 samples found to contain BCV by IGEM only 14 were positive by DEM. The IGEM technique is simple, efficient and less susceptible than others to non-specific reactions.
All-trans retinoic acid (RA) has been shown to inhibit cell proliferation while increasing neuroendocrine differentiation in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cells. RA and related compounds are rapidly becoming integrated into clinical trials to prevent lung cancers and other aerodigestive neoplasms. We found that expression of gastrin releasing peptide (GRP), which can promote lung tumorigenesis in model systems, was increased by RA in SCLC cells which have functional retinoid signaling. In SCLC cells that possess functional GRP receptors, ectopic expression of RARc increased GRP expression and augmented cloning efficiency, demonstrating that these maneuvers result in biologically active GRP. SCLC cells with defects in RA pathway signaling did not efficiently induce GRP upon RA exposure. In these cells, transfection of RARs rendered the cells competent to induce GRP upon RA exposure. These data show that activation of intact retinoid signaling by RA can induce GRP, a growth factor that can act as a tumor promoter. Our findings suggest the possibility that retinoids may increase, rather than decrease, lung cancer risks in some individuals.
