The activity of the fixed combination Phlebodril on the venous hemodynamic system was studied in 20 healthy volunteers. A different reaction was seen. One part of the volunteers showed a significantly reduced venous capacity whereas the other part presented an increase in venous storage ability. This effect especially was observed after application of trimethylhesperidinchalcone, which increases the capillary resistance.

In an open clinical trial 14 patients with intermittent claudication caused by an obliteration of the femoral artery received 400 mg pentoxifylline 3 times daily over a period of 6 months. The walking distance, time to peak flow and calf ergometry showed a significant increase. Minor improvement of working hyperemia and peak flow could be found. The systolic pressure gradient over the obstruction didn't change. No patient complained about side effects.

The effect of saralasin, a competitive inhibitor of angiotensin II, was assessed in hypertensive patients with unilateral renal artery stenosis after furosemide application. A significant fall of systemic arterial blood pressure, an increase of renal venous renin activity, significantly on the stenosed side in patients without arteriosclerosis of the contralateral kidney, and an almost equal decrement of renal blood flow in both kidneys were observed. Conceivably saralasin exerts different sodium-dependent effects on peripheral angiotensin II and specific intrarenal vascular receptors.
Measurement of the venous capacity by means of strain-gauge-plethysmography when performed under standardised conditions produces reproducible values in chronic test also. Acutely, the venous capacity of the healthy can be reduced by cold water and increased by warm water appplication. When measuring pressure in the great saphenous vein, which was performed during stress test and after cooling down, a clear improvement of the valvular function in the shank coud be ascertained. The healthy lying down, a distinct increase of the venous tonus takes place after application of cold water. With respect to primary varicosis, in addition to the acute reduction of volume, a chronic training effect, in the sense of a reduction in the venous capacity, significantly can be a convenient means for the treatment of primary varicosis and of less severe forms of chronic venous insufficiency.
Angiography is the most important diagnostic procedure for evaluation of renovascular hypertension. Technique and limits of this method as well as possible ways of improving its diagnostic value are discussed. The pathogenetic significance of a renal artery stenosis in hypertension and the prognosis for a vascular surgical intervention is discussed in the light of bilateral renin determination and the 138 Xe method of measuring intrarenal hemodynamics.

Using DNCB contact sensitization, the primary cellular immune response of 40 normal individuals was investigated. The response to DNCB in the younger age group was higher and stronger than in the older age group, suggesting a decrease of T-cell function in elderly subjects. The simultaneous application of a high (1000 mug) and a low (100 mug) dose of DNCB for quantitation of the reactivity gave good results. However, in several cases - especially in the younger age group - the local reactions reached unexpected intensity followed by long lasting pigmentation. One investigator exhibited contact eczema on both hands after sensitization by merely touching the skin area of a previous DNCB reaction. Because of the potent immunogenicity of this substance and the possibility of cross reactions with numerous similar antigens widely used in the chemical and related industry, this test should only be applied in selected cases.

In 2 patients with Echinococcus alveolaris of the liver an angiography of the celiac axis, superior mesenteric artery and -- indirectly -- of the splenic vein was performed. The findings -- obliteration, dislocation, corc screw collaterals -- are not diagnostic. This statement is supplemented by a review of the special literature. The value of an arterial angiography consists in delineating the extent of the process. In this sense the method seems to be superior to a liver scan. Angiography is indicated when curative surgical therapy is discussed.
Using synthetic human parathormone 1-34, a radioimmunological method for measuring this hormone fragment was developed which, as the amino-terminal PTH assay, permits the measurement of the concentration gradient in the neighborhood of OTH-secreting tumors. The use of preoperative location diagnosis in primary hyperparathyroidism is demonstrated with some typical cases, especially in revision operations.
