Tumour uptake of thallium-201 chloride.

The uptake of 201Tl-chloride in tumours has recently been investigated in several authors' laboratories. We are reporting studies on the uptake in malignant melanoma in mice. Generally, we confirm the published data qualitatively in finding higher uptake in tumour than in muscles. We confirm the rapid blood clearance and high kidney concentration, but we did not measure the myocardial uptake. We observed the concentrations in kidney muscle and tumour to rise during the first four hours while that in the liver fell from one hour onwards. We did not observe markedly higher uptake in melanin rich tumour than in other tumours.

Performance characteristics of a gamma camera over a wide range of energies.

The problem of choosing which collimator to use for imaging a new isotope has been approached by collecting resolution and sensitivity data for a selected group of isotopes. These have been chosen to be readily available and to have generally a single gamma-ray only. Resolution and sensitivity plots for a low energy collimator and a high energy collimator are presented and their use with several isotopes of interest is discussed. The interpretation of recommedations in the literature on the choice of collimators for newly introduced isotopes would be considerably simpler if data in this format were commonly available.

Functional imaging of lung ventilation using the concept of mean transit time.

This paper describes a new way of expressing local ventilation using a scintillation gamma camera interfaced to a digital computer. From the ratio of the first to the zeroth moment of the lung clearance curve for 13N gas, a mean transit time is calculated and displayed for different regions of the lung. Lung clearance curves following intravenously administered 13N solutions, or after equilibration with 13N gas, are measured during normal breathing. Describing regional ventilation by mean transit time during clearance uses all the counts in the lung clearance curve and the improvement in statistical accuracy compared with the height over area method using a Stewart-Hamilton equation is significant. In normal subjects the average mean transit time for clearance from the total lung field is t = (61 +/- 4) s, from the upper zone tuz = (64 +/- 4) s and from the lower zone tlz = (54 +/- 5) s. These results show uneven ventilation between regions of the normal lung in general agreement with that described by previous authors. In addition, the functional image gives the mean transit time for each cell of the 64 X 64 matrix of the computer display. The fractional error in mean transit time is 3% for an area of 2-2 cm2 corresponding to 12 cells in the display. This display provides a sensitive method, functionally and spatially, of investigating local differences in ventilation, including vertical and horizontal gradients in narrow strips of lung.

A comparison of clinical results in brain scanning using germanium semiconductor detectors and sodium iodide detectors.

A comparison is presented of the image quality obtained with a 70 mm Ge(Li) detector scanner and with routine techniques based on NaI (Tl) detectors. One hundred and sixty-five pairs of brain scans have been examined for which the patients have been scanned with both Ge(Li) and NaI (Tl) detectors. It is concluded that no major difficulties exist in introducing Ge(Li) scanners and that while a comparison of scans from different instruments is difficult there is evidence that improved diagnostic information may be obtained from scanners with Ge(Li) detectors.

The assay of iodine-123.

Compounds labeled with 123I are becoming more common in scintillation imaging due to the convenient combination of the 13.3-hr half-life and the 159-keV gamma radiation. Here attention is drawn to the particularly large summing effects observed when 123I is counted in a well counter. These could lead to errors in the assay of doses if the analyzer windows used are too narrow.

Gastric emptying following vagotomy and antrectomy and proximal gastric vagotomy.

Gastric emptying of solid meals labelled with 129Cs was studied in patients for up to one year after vagotomy and antrectomy or after proximal gastric vagotomy. Significant delay was found one month after vagotomy and antrectomy but this had returned to normal by six months. No delay was found after proximal gastric vagotomy. The effect of posture on gastric emptying was also studied in the same subjects. No significant differences were found between gastric emptying in the supine or sitting positions after solid meals.
