Promising new drugs in the treatment of tuberculosis and mycobacteriosis.

The aims of this work were to investigate the possible effect of several antimicrobial agents alone and in combinations against 190 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and 30 isolates of Mycobacterium avium, 30 Mycobacterium fortuitum and 30 Mycobacterium chelonei. The susceptibility was determined in Müller-Hinton agar and Middlebrook 7H 10 agar. For interpretation of the results the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined and for the combinations of antimicrobials we used the Fractional Inhibitory Concentration Index (FIC). The possible clinical efficacy was determined by the Inhibitory Quotient. The synergistic effect of several combinations of these compounds was demonstrated.

[Fulminant hepatic insufficiency].

We studied the patients admitted to the Intensive Medicine Department of the "Carlos Haya" Regional Hospital of Málaga (Spain) with a diagnosis of fulminant liver failure (IHF) between 1980 and October 1986. There were 7 patients, 6 women and one man: 5 had a picture of fulminant hepatitis, one pregnant female had fatty liver, and the man had fulminant hepatitis due to accidental inhalation of carbon tetrachloride. The average age of the group was 32 years. Six patients (85%) died; their average stay was 4.6 days, ranging from 10 hours to 7 days. The woman who survived spent 17 days in the unit. Postmortem studies were made in 4 patients. In the pregnant patient with fatty liver, 36 weeks gestation, a cesarean was performed and a live female fetus of 2,720 g. weight was extracted. Some pathogenic aspects of the disease are discussed, such as the incidence of superinfection by other viruses (delta virus), the influence of immunological factors on the development of fulminant liver failure, morphological findings, therapeutic results and the need for multicenter studies.

In vitro activity of antimicrobial agents against mycobacteria.

The aims of this study were to investigate the possible effects of new antimicrobial agents, the conventional antituberculosis drugs and several combinations of these agents against 190 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and 30 of M. avium.

[Hyperglycemia in hypertonic dehydration (author's transl)].

Fourteen patients who developed hyperglycemia with hypertonic dehydration are reviewed, and compared to a control group of twenty-four dehydrated infants without hyperglycemia. The threshold of hyperglycemia was considered at 125 mg. %. The relationship between hyperglycemia and degree of formula concentration, incidence of shock and water and solute metabolism chemistry are analysed. The different theories about hyperglycemia in the course of hypertonic dehydration are discussed. Because of the negativity of other factors, authors suggest that the most important factor in hyperglycemia may be the ionic alteration of the cell.

[Blue rubber bleb nevus (author's transl)].

A case of Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus in a 11 year-old boy is reported. The patient exhibited characteristic hemangiomas of the skin and gastrointestinal tract with an iron deficiency anemia. Historical, clinical, pathological, and surgical features of the condition are discussed. Value of fibroscopic examination in delineation of the cause of persistent gastrointestinal bleeding is pointed out.
