[beta2-Microglobulin and carcino-embryonic antigen in bronchogenic carcinoma (author's transl)].

In a series of 52 patients with bronchogenic carcinoma serum levels of beta2-microglobulin (beta2m) and carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) were studied. No correlation was found between the increase of beta2m (greater than 3,2 mg/l) and CEA (greater than 40 ng/l). High levels were found in 10 % of cases for CEA and in 30% of cases for beta2m. The follow-up of serum levels of beta2m and CEA was studied during the evolution of the disease through monthly assays. Upon 15 cases followed, the same dissociation between beta2m and CEA was observed.

[beta2-Microglobulin and pulmonary tuberculosis (author's transl)].

Serum beta2-microglobulin levels, determined in 29 healthy adults were found to be 1,3 mg/l with an upper confidence limit (95%) of 2,0 mg/ml. In contrast, serum values in 101 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis were 2,1 mg/l with an upper confidence limit of 3,2 mg/l. The latter value is therefore to be taken into consideration if serum beta2m is to be used for discriminating between lung carcinoma and other pulmonary diseases.

[Toxic pathology of the hepatocyte in histiotype culture. II--Effects of an organic chlorine compound: lindane. Effect of a foreign metabolizable substance and toxic effect].

Lindane or HCH is gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane, still used as an agricultural insecticide. Tests were carried out using primary cultures of chicken embryo hepatocytes at the 11th day of incubation, for a fixed period of 40 hours, using different concentrations of the substance. From 0.5 to 10 mumol/l, acid phosphatase fell significantly, without any other consequences being observed. From 25 to 50 mumol/l, there was a tendency to hypertrophy of the mitochondria, to hyperplasia of the granular and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and of the Golgi system. Growth was unchanged and acid phosphatase decreased. From 75 to 125 mumol/l, these changes were accompanied by signs of cellular damage and there was marked autophagia. Growth was reduced and acid phosphatase greatly decreased. From 150 to 175 mumol/l, the lesions were markedly polymorphous and some indicative of impending cytolysis, in particular spiral tearing of the hyaloplasm. Growth was markedly impaired, whilst there was a paradoxal increase in acid phosphatase. In increasing concentration, L first had the effect of a metabolisable foreign substance, of the "phenobarbital" type, then a definite toxic action. Sensitivity of the individual hepatocytes differed.

[Analysis of one thousand liver scans carried out using technetium phytate (author's transl)].

One thousand liver scans were carried out using technetium phytate. This soluble compound is transformed in the circulating blood into a colloid by chelation of serum calcium, thereby forming a macromolecular phytate of calcium and technetium. The presenting symptoms are compared with the isotopic findings. This microcolloid has the advantages common to all technetium tracers and, in addition, is easy to prepare and has the advantage of a distribution between the liver, spleen and bone of the same type as that seen with colloidal gold 198 without the dosimetric problems associated with the latter. Although it has a level of hepatic fixation which is less than that of certain sulphide complexes of technetium, the authors feel that it appears to provide a better relfection of the colloidopexic function of the liver.

[Early isotopic synoviorthesis during rheumatoid polyarthritis (RP)].

The authors report the results of 1258 chemical synovectomies carried out in subjects with rheumatoid polyarthritis on joints at Steinbrocker stage I and of 470 chemical synovectomies carried out during the first year of evolution of rheumatoid polyarthritis. Comparison with the results of chemical synovectomy carried out later demonstrate the superiority of early chemical synovectomy.

[14 cases of constrictive endocardial fibrosis (or endomyocardial fibrosis].

Constrictive endocardial fibrosis (CEF) or endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) was studied on 14 files of this rather frequent disease in Ivory Coast. On the basis of the data derived from angiocardiography, catheterization and mechanograms, the clinical signs are interpreted better. Thus one is able to describe with accuracy some clinical forms, the commonest of which being a right heart restriction combined with left-sided signs. It seems important underline how useful the external pulse recordings might be useful for the diagnosis in view of their analogy with the pressure curves. In this disease with a severe course, bold surgical treatments provide some hope. On the contrary, its aetiology remains mysterious. Our best landmark being the link of CEP with tropical ecology, and in particular, in our cases, with the warm and damp forest ecology of some areas.
